St George-Illawarra have secured Cowboys star Valentine Holmes on a $2.5 million three-year-deal.

The Maroons State of Origin star has been released from the final year of his contract in Townsville to link up with his 2016 premiership-winning coach, Shane Flanagan.
The deal will be officially confirmed later on Wednesday.

Holmes is a huge signing as a goalkicking centre, winger or fullback to replace Zac Lomax.
He is the Dragons’ second major signing for 2025, after Flanagan secured South Sydney hooker Damien Cook on a two-year deal.

The Dragons could have a new-look, veteran spine if Flanagan decides to deploy Holmes as a fullback next season, with Kyle Flanagan at five-eighth, Ben Hunt at halfback and Cook, the 32-year-old former NSW Origin star, in the No.9 jersey.
It’s understood Holmes’ management sounded out the Sydney Roosters about a potential switch next season.

Fellow departing Cowboy, halfback Chad Townsend, is Bondi bound in 2025 but, despite losing Joseph Aukuso-Suaalii and Joey Manu, the Roosters made it clear they weren’t in a position to recruit a highly paid outside back.
Holmes made his debut in 2014 and played 105 games with the Sharks but quit the NRL in 2018 to try his hand in the NFL.
He returned to rugby league in 2020 with the Cowboys and is due to play his 200th game in Round 25 against Melbourne in Townsville.

Well done on a Flanagan for getting his man.

we needed him with the loss of Lomax. Older now and past his absolute best but will have something to contribute. We are paying too much but no other choice at this point.

Better than a kick in the teeth for sure but we are really into mature age players.
He still be 29 when he joins us and just turns 32 when it ends. Not that old
