Not so much for their music but for their makeup , poodle hairdo's and unoriginal sound and vid clips.
Chad ( the RHCP drummer ) was an ex-poodle himself.
He called it pop metal.

When all others were doing big hair in the 80's they were doing funk/punk fusion....sh*t they invented it almost .
Unless you consider george clinton to have.

But yes they stick to the formula .

Offcourse he'd say that, after all RHCP like Ratt etc is pop aswell lol, and a rival....actually RHCP is more rap;-).

TBH I've never rated RHCP after they released Blood Sugar Sex Magic. Anthony might rubbish Hair bands, but the Chillies are hardly original themselves anymore in every facet including looks, the way he sings, same bass slaps, hand movements etc.

Give me a concert clip anyday over a Chilli clip, Chilli's clip are probably the most boring i've witnessed, atleast with Hair clips they are rembered, i cannot actually recall a RHCP clip which standsout or distinctive in anyway?

I think most bands do sound like themselves;-), even almost every hair band had their own style for example, you know Gunners sound, you know Crue's sound, you know WASP style etc, every band has their distinctive idiosynchresies.

to be fair he was talking about geting the "suck my kiss" video made.
He said every director they met showed them hair pop vids they'd made for those bands ...and how they all looked the same.

either acting live on stage or the old ballad in the studio thing.
