saints next year :

fullback - morris (junior)
centres - gasnier (junior) and matt cooper (junior)
wingers - morris (junior) and nightingale (junior)
halves - hornby (junior) and jamie soward

hooker - woolford
props - ryles (junior) and kirk reynoldson
2nd row - poore (junior), creagh (junior)
lock - young (junior)

bench - rangi chase, chase stanley, dan hunt (junior) and wendall sailor

so out of 17 top players i make it 11 local products. clearly the benefits of a merger with both the st george and illawarra areas developing good juniors

you may want to check the status of Pritchard, Blair and Moke I think they all may be local products..

Pritchard is a Western Suburbs junior, Blair is a Queenslander, and Moke ain't one of ours (Enfield Federals junior).

Sorry to re-hash this thread guys, but as I stated earlier, I think Manly are heading in the right direction:-

From Manly Daily:
"Homegrown Talent"

AN impressive 13 of the starting 17 of Manly's Harold Matthews squad this year will be LOCAL juniors. So much for not giving locals a go.

Agree with you on this partly.
My brother plays in the local comp here, there is still a lot of improvement Melbourne Storm could do with supporting the local comp. I mean yeah a few Storm players will come down to the games every now and again, but a lot more money is needed to support the comp. I suppose it could be more of a VRL problem, but seriously it still needs a lot of work.
As the players get older there are less and less competition for them and dont get me started on the senior local comp here, its a fricken shambles.

There has been major growth, but it is still far from where it should be if Melbourne want some homegrown first graders.

Its great that there are a few victorian boys in the U20's squad but keep in mind, one is a Pom, ones from NZ and the two Victorian born players are of Kiwi or Pac Is background.
The majority of kids playing in the local league here are of Kiwi or Pac Is background.

May I ask about your source? he/she, going by last year is a little ill informed, there is some primary school stuff going on, but going on last season alone the support for the junior comp was not at the level it should be and I certainly hope I am proven wrong this year. I know people involved with one the more sucessful clubs here and according to them a lot still needs to be done.

Just a note this is all coming from a one eyed Storm fan, who has been supporting since I first found out a team was coming down here.

I played in the Vic competition when the Storm first set up. There was no interaction with seniors/juniors at all. We were ignored completely.

Whilst I'm, not dirrectly involved anymore, I'm told (from a solid source) that there is plenty of work going into the kids at both clubs and Primary Schools.

Anyone who wants the storm gone are NOBS!!

Heheheheehehe

So only white Victorian born players count as "true" Vics do they. I suspected thats how alot of Victorians viewed the Pacific Islander community.

No I didn't say that, but NZ and Pac Is kids are more inclined to be brought up around Rugby League than "white" kids here in Melbourne.
Are you assuming I'm not apart of the pacific island community?

No assumptions Melbourne Belle

More a comment on what the Victorian media will class as a Victorian born & bred player. As I can guarentee that when one of these kids makes it for the Storm you'll hear comments in the Vic sports media along the line of "yeah, but he is a......."

I know what your saying, I am anything but a fan of the Victorian Media when it comes to Rugby League, and I agree with you, but I think more of the "yeah, but he is a ...." will come from outside of Victoria and from the critics of Melbourne Storm.

Im all for the the Vic guys in the U20's as I know a couple of them personally, so by no means am I down playing any of there acheivements weither or not they become the first Vic born first grader.

I think this reflects one of the major issues in the game ie having seperate organiser bodies reunning different parts of the game.

The Storm have a full time job making sure they are a competitive and sustainable NRL team. It should be the VRL's job to ensure the structure under the Storm is comprhensive and bringing through players at all age groups. the VRL should be financially and administrativly supported by the ARL to do that.

We have a similiar situation in the West where the WARL have to not only worry about getting the jnr and amateur game right but also work on readmission to the NRL, promote the game, combat the influence of RU and try and get the game in the media. It's a tall order for poorly funded organisations.

Ideally the VRL,WARL,QRL etc would receive plenty of funding from the ARL and the NRL clubs would work closely with them to offer the profile and support they need to get the game to more people.

A great new initiative out West to give our jnrs a more competitive comp:

Junior Reds Cup 2008

.A RUGBY LEAGUE - COLTS COMPETITION 2008 The Western Australian Rugby League is extremely pleased to announce the formation of the `Junior Reds Cup' Colts Competition to commence in March 2008. The formation of the `Junior Reds Cup' marks the beginning of an exciting new era for rugby league in Western Australia as the newly formed W.A Reds enter the 1st-Grade Jim Beam Cup.

The `Junior Reds Cup' will be for players aged 20 years and under in 2008 and will be played on Saturday afternoons as curtain-raiser games to the W.A Reds Jim Beam Cup side. All games will be played under lights at the magnificent Members Equity Stadium in Perth - undoubtedly the best venue for rugby league in Western Australia.

The Junior Reds Cup will resemble a representative competition with 4 high quality teams involved and games played every second week (prior to every W.A Reds home games). Teams will be district-based in the following zones:
- Northern Zone featuring players from Joondalup and North Beach;
- Western Zone with players from South Perth and Fremantle
- Eastern Zone with players from Bulldogz and Kalgoorlie
- Southern Zone with players from Rockingham and Willagee

Coaches for the Colts teams will be nominated by the individual clubs and selected by the WARL.

Players involved in the Junior Reds Cup will be registered with their own club and as a result will also be able to play 1st Grade or Premier league. Players turning 17 in 2008 are also encouraged to try out for the Colts team as well as play in their own Under 17's age group on Sunday afternoons. There will be opportunities for Colts players to impress the coaching staff of the W.A Reds and create a future pathway into the Jim Beam Cup and NRL.

The `Junior Reds Cup' has the full support of all WARL clubs and will offer a prestigious and professionally run competition in 2008 and beyond. You are encouraged to contact your nearest club as soon as possible and register for season 2008. All club contacts are listed on the attached page. Alternatively you can contact Kim Williams at the WARL on 0411 159 478, We are looking forward to seeing you representing your district in the `Junior Reds Cup' during the Centenary year of rugby league in Australia in 2008.
