When do the players sing the song...after they win a game..

When do players like Billy Moore get themselves into a trance-like state by chanting a mantra such as 'Queenslander'???

At the end of the game? I don't think so!

I think the most emotional(stirring-call it what you like)club anthem is Liverpool Football Club singing You'll Never Walk Alone.
The fans sing it before the game and it just creates the atmosphere.
They then sing it during and after the game, anywhere and everywhere and some of their fans even play it at their funeral.(well someone plays it for them).
They are a very proud bunch and I can only dream that the Sharks Theme Song could inspire in such a way.
Play it anywhere and everywhere I reckon.

well wolverine may be getting a little ahead of himself with the personal jibes refering to people as wankers or whatever for singing the song before the end of the game (hey, i honestly don't care where you like to touch yourselves)

but i totally agree with the concept that it is the worst jinx ever to sing your club song before the game is over. sure sing it in the shower / train / backyard, maybe even before kick-off, but singing it at the ground during the game before the victory is secured is to my mind bad luck and bad form and also dilutes the impact of the song as a victory celebration. of course it's only a superstition, but that's part of what builds the culture at a club and especially among supporters.

i'm no song police to tell people when to sing whatever, but having grown up in the supporter culture of english football (soccer) i know we had plenty of songs and chants that were used at different times throughout the game but the one thing that no club's supporters did was sing the club song until the game was in the bag. if anybody was ignorant or cheeky enough to try it they were quickly 'persuaded' by the rest of the firm that this was definitely not in their best interests.

obviously some of us feel differently and that's the way you want to show your support, but this same tradition is followed in most sports and also by plenty of other nrl clubs so i cannot help but cringe a litle bit when other supporters look at us like we have absolutely no idea when we start singing our song 12 minutes into the first half.

think about it

probably !

it's just about the right context. like i said above, if this were the uk or even melbourne then you'd be spot on. but we are in sydney and sharks fans singing the club song are just expressing their support, not being tossers. it isn't ignorance so much as just a different cultural context.

you'll never walk alone i guess is the exception that proves the rule, but the granny bashers love it so much they use it as an all-purpose one-song-fits-all type thing. it's also not really a jinx because it's an unofficial fan's anthem taken from a 60's pop song - sort of like imagine if 'heroes' had overtaken up up cronulla as the fan's favourite

I say we should run out to it at the beginning like the AFL teams do. The whole crowd stands up and sings the club song as the AFL team crashes through those big supporters banners. The Sharks just run out to some cheers, boos and flag waving. Imagine every one singing the club song in anticipation of them running out. Uplifting for the players and the kids love it so much they demand to return to the next home game. Then if we win, play it again. You beauty.

I just had a flashback to the Dragons V Sharks game at Kogarah and i remember some Deekheads singing the victory song(up, up cronulla) during the match...FFS it is a victory song and it is such a stupid thing to sing when it is not the end of the match. Anyone who believes that it should be sung during the game is a complete tosser.

Mate, get farked. I was one of the guys singing it at Kogarah and i think I had a go at you when you told us to shut up. I don't see it as a victory song, I see as the club song. Just as Saints fans might sing "Oh when the Saints" during a game or Liverpool fans sing "You'll never walk alone" during a game, I reckon we should sing Up Up Cronulla as much as possible during the game. If we happen to be losing at the time, then even better. Try and fire up the team, show them we care.

The only time I don't agree with hearing it, is when they play it over the loud speaker after a loss. If it's played over the loud speaker then yes it's a victory song, but the fans should be able to sing it whenever they want to, to show their pride for their team.

Frenzy.

STOP PRESS:

Beer Hill patrons to record their own version of UP, UP CRONULLA.

Watch this space.

In fact Round 26 might be a good time for someone to bring a video camera and do just that!

Very easily converted to mpeg or avi for web publishing!
