Anyway there have been a lot of similar comps to VNRL in the past, and there are still a couple out there now.

simply allow VNRL to use the stats that the NRL have at their fingertips, is all that would have been required

The NRL can't give them out.

NRLStats own the copyright on all stats. NRLStats is nothing to do with the NRL, except they are contracted to do the official stats. NRLStats then sells the stats to media outlets. The NRL can't give them out at all.
