Yeah, the reason I put both in there is we'll probably need a genuine utility/DH option on the bench next week to cover the 9, so 1 forward (Sipley) in might = 2 forwards out. Of course if Mannering is unavailable it changes things. His stats weren't too different compared to Vete... he did play 6 more minutes though. And Vete's tackling actually looked better on the whole (the one try saver was good from Gubb in the first half) I thought. More dominance in the contact.

I'm sure Bodene would've been disappointed to come back from injury and have to play dummy half, not his fault it's not his role. SK's first error, really to not have a back-up plan.

Did Sipley play reserves? And go well?
By the press conference Bodene was the plan to use at hooker to give Luke a rest if needed.

At the end of the day I'm happy with the 2 points, but plenty to do during the week.

  • Man, how many dropped balls did we have? The most basic skill needed...hold on the ball
  • Maumalo....how can this guy be the best we've got? Please get him out of there. Please.
  • Forwards lacked punch. Only 4 forwards getting over 100m, with 2 of them limping to 102m and 104 respectively. We're really lacking that forward leader, someone who's gunna rack up 150m plus each game.
  • SJ, RTS, Fusitua, all looked really sharp on attack.
Overall, if we cut out the stupid errors and penalties, our games gunna improve dramatically.

Hoping Mannering and Luke are okay, having those two, Foran and Matulino out are 4 of our 6 most important players, and I think we struggle big time next week without them all.

A wins a win tho, gotta be pleased about that!

One thing that really shits me is the one handed carries which inevitably leads to a drop ball. The other is individuals displays of brilliance when it's not required, ie Tui kicking the ball on the 1st after RTS's 70m break

Gubb deserves to keep a spot more than Papaali who had a bad miss and didn't do much.
I think Gubb is filling the 3rd prop role well enough. 86m, 34 tackles (1 miss) and no errors that I recall. He's never gonna bend the line that much but if he just sticks to running straight and getting a decently quick play the ball he does his job.

Does Gubb get a decently quick play the ball though? It seems to me like his are laboured, and he allows the opposition to get straight up. The commentators seem to have this weird nostalgia about his 'round the bootleg' tackles, when they should know that half the time it's allowing the opposition to get up quickly and not engaging a wrestle that allows our guys to get back onside. Yes, the one on our line was great. But the rest, it seems to me he's putting more pressure on us. I imagine the Storm, as well prepared as they are, will be out to expose this.

He won't be dropped, so no real point discussing his spot. Papaali has to go to give Luke a better back-up plan than Bodene (horribly bad that SK thought Bodene could cut it) and Ken just can't justify being a FGer. He does nothing well apart from carry the ball, for which he needs to become a forward for (he may not be tough enough).

PS where are you guys getting the match stats from? nrlstats.com.au seems to be misfiring.

Re the round the ankles tackles, I think you should look at the current team and opposition tactics. Teams are obviously working on short passing at the line to get one on one with defenders so that the gang tackles can't happen. When one on one they have players then using leg drive to make an extra 3-5 metres.

Obviously the best tackle is 2-3 players stopping forward moment and driving the player back 2-3 metres and lying all over them.

Tackling round the legs one on one, might allow a quick PTB but it can limit yardage in a one on one. Also if you tackle round the legs a second play should try and wrap up the ball, or the tackler climb on top to slow it down. Thats been the same forever. I hear it time and time again that a round the legs tackle is a 'bad' tackle, but that depends on the circumstance. A good round the legs tackle made before the advantage line means the line can move back quickly and reset, because they don't have to run back as far.

Warriors obviously have a tactic to bring 3rd player in round the legs to stop leg drive.

Its not all bad to make a classic tackle. You also can't offload from the ground. It is starting to make a comeback.

On Sunday I was suprised not to see a traditional bench where the number 14 is usually a utility halves/back substitution and the three forwards. I assumed Kearney opted for an all forwards bench and was going to shuffle Tui into the halves somehow if it came to that. But no, to my suprise as Phil mentioned, he had Thompson as cover. For a 2nd rower to all of a sudden cover hook, in the first game of the year and also considering how close the game was, can really take a toll. We could see that in Thompsons lethargic arrivals to the play-the-balls and is probably why we saw such a weak attempt to tackle Knights prop Stockwell who ran over Thompson and Papalii to score a soft as you like.
Overall, if we cut out the stupid errors and penalties, our games gunna improve dramatically.
Absolutely. From the nines we saw poor ball handling skills and I think it was Iafeta that raised that as a real concern and rightfully so. While we hoped it was just a nines thing, Sunday clearly showed it wasnt. It will get ironed out eventually but catching and passing is classed as the basics and its just unprofessional to struggle with the basics.

Speaking of unprofessional, Maumalo. I feel you Villa on his selection. Will Kearney be as audacious to select a one trick pony again? I honestly dont know the answer to that because Kearney saw the same sh1t we saw from Ken last year and then he picks him! Oh my god!

Anyway I might call you Villa Maumalo from now on lol :) it sounds good man.

Perhaps a clause in their contract stating a pay cut for that and the no look pass. Behind the back pass is understandable but passing in front of you no look style, is just not worth the cool look.

Poor handling skills with the warriors has been around a long long time. And passing. There is no quick fix as its something fundamentally missing from their skill sets. Fatigue can be a factor for sure, back end of the game, but not in the first 20 minutes when we are often at our worse.

Great handling skills= catching everything you should, plus some you shouldn't
Warrior's handling skills = catching some you shouldn't, dropping truckloads you should

I need a hug. So negative these days.

You touch on a good aspect here around the tackle and how to slow it down. The boot lace tackle does allow for the ball carrier to drop on the ground in a half plank or push up position to which he can get a quick play the ball from as the flop tackle law will keep 2nd defenders off.

Gubb should know better to bootlace as the first tackler if thats what hes doing. Its good to do if your with another such as 'Ill go low, you got high' but to bootlace as the first up and only tackler is not dominant and you want dominance in the tackle. You want to get up and in marker position BEFORE the guy playing the ball gets up to play it. If we look at the Storm or most of the other teams, the first two defenders aim to wrap them up high, ball and all and the third one comes down low and then the ball carrier is grounded. Very seldom is it the other way around with low first unless theyre still standing which can lead to offload etc etc... after that they peel of one by one and you guys that have played the game, knows the method and rationale from here.

Yeah good point though.
