Gross over-simplification. If we didn't have the Kiwis (or Tongans) wearing 2-3-4-5 today we wouldn't have enjoyed the physical dominance and all of the territory and possession we had. If we had 4 Jono Wright's maybe we would never have got into the opposition half.

Agree with most of that - but Wright has been decent and really should play ahead of Maumolo

Hurrell, Kata, Maumolo all have potentially big upsides, but are woeful defensively - I really don't understand why Hurrell in particular hasn't improved, he's not exactly inexperienced any more...

Laumape was the one useful in both attack and defence, the others (at the moment) only seem interested in ball running

Correct me if im wrong but Australia and NZ are countries. No where in my statement did I make mention of any races.
What I was trying to imply is that Australia seems to have smarter backs. For every Stacey Jones, there are 10 Aussies just as clever (ie Lockyer, Johns, Slater, Cronk, Thurston, Hodges, Lewis, Sterling etc) We can hold our own in the forwards but not in the backs because our coaches cant coach good backs for some reason. Why is it that almost all our backs in the Kiwis are from NRL clubs in Australia? Reason. Better coaches. We need to import these players over that have had coaching from an early age.its too hard for McFadden to retrain our kiwi backs in a short amount of time on the fundamentals of defence. It needs to be ingrained into them at an early age. Its actually an indictment on the coaching standards in NZ.

Look at the Warriors.Great on attack. Shit on D. 20 years of Warriors games should be enough evidence for you.

And since you have brought up Wright, let me remind you he saved 3 tries against the Storm not that many games ago. That's a potential 18 points. Did Maumalo or Vatuvei score a hattrick tonight to counter that? No.


The only time our backline D looked passable was when Cleary was coaching. There was a 2 year span when we could defend like demons. But look closer and you will see it was converted forwards like Mannering and Brown that were sitting in the backs and a centre by the name of Tate that was yelling at everyone.

In NZ we are just taught to play hard but fair. In Australia they are taught to win

This isn't a race thing either. Marn has a point get them early and have that mental steel to always win. Or we may as well steal more Union imports like Laumape whom knows that the flashy shit always comes to you when you play with mental steel. Man id trade Laumape with any of our centres or wingers at this stage.

But the one problem with that theory is that the Warriors only ever pick some of the forwards we need - they don't seem to like the good Maori forwards floating around (FYI - I'm all for picking the best players of any ethnicity but the Warriors seem to miss all the good Maori forwards, I'm not sure why.)

Plus if we get the right Kiwi backs we'll be alright. Backs the calibre of Foran, RTS and Whare are as clever/good as any Oz backs out there. Sadly we're only ever going to have one of those blokes.

Disappointing game tonight but I thought Tui went well. But the forwards were all off and on, Mariner was awesome one minute and then a dunderhead the next. Matulino did some good carting and then went overboard running at the little blokes. etc etc.
