There is no link as it’s bs. The agreement to pay travel was made at inception of the club in 1992, original travel was covered in the budgetting until the ARL added the extra side at the 12th hour added a major unbudgeted cost Imposition. .
I reads it online, won’t shy away from that fact but I counter with this. where is your document or proof that states otherwise and the flight payment was introduced earlier?

That sounds exactly how they would behave. The ARL at that time was hostile to the game outside its traditional borders. The fact they even allowed Perth in was a minor miracle. That attitude is still reflected in the funding to ‘affiliated states’ till this day. And it’s also reflected by the attitude of the peanut gallery here now.
The Cowboys had similar conditions placed on them by the ARL

Ironically, Steve Mascords book paints a slightly different picture.

I guess it depends what side you were on. I will say a News Limited Journo would know about how they were able to get the clubs across.

So there would be some truth to it, how much is it added to to help sell books is the question

Showcases that even two authors publishing different books on the same subject which is intended to be truth revealing can still have conflicting views regardless of having compiled a mountain of facts.

Entire thing will never be objective.

Yeh the arl who had grown rugby league such that it was the number one sport in Australia were doing a bad job

Adding teams from Perth, Auckland and North Queensland was dare I use the word …. Visionary

Murdoch was a cretin and the clubs that went to super league were traitors to the game

Clubs like the dragons manly and roosters could’ve all tried to save their own skin like the selfish clubs but they put the games heritage first

Under news Ltd ownership the game was dieing

It’s only under a strong arl leader the game is growing again

Packer was no better than Murdoch he stabbed Arko in the back as much as bullfrog

Thinking you could have a strong rugby league competition in Australia without souths and St George was sheer lunacy

Souths didn’t do any mergers and they are back better than ever

Ditto for the bears.

People who hate that the nrl is Sydney centric are cretins

Afl is Melbourne centric

The 3 teams Pvl has added will see the game growing for decades

International football is going to be huge
You would have to be stoned out of your mind to claim Rugby League was the number 1 sport in Australia in the 1990s.

f**k, until only about 10 years ago, the game wasn't even shown live on FTA outside of NSW and QLD, let alone 30 years ago

I can't imagine ARL handing over their notes/meeting minutes to Coleman and vice versa

Like with all this things the truth is in the middle. NQ have said the same thing about travel costs. So that part seems true

Even after SL not every game was televised. Nathan Hindmarsh's debut is 1 example of a game not shown

Completely off topic but remember the NBL in the early to mid 90s? Each city televised their home towns team, usually live. Game was booming with a true national distribution. It would have been close to one of the more popular sports leagues in Australia for a couple of years. Shame it collapsed on itself.

This is correct. It’s why the storm rate so high on fox to this day. The only way you could watch them play live outside NSW and QLD was on fox. I got Austar all those years ago just to watch live footy.

Mike Coleman’s book was quite complimentary about the arl which was surprising given he was a news ltd hack

He tells how the idea for super league came from the broncos who took it too News Ltd (they were unhappy with not getting the grand final in Brisbane, having to use xxxx as a sponsor and lang park over anz)

He doesn’t buy into the News Ltd vision bs

George Piggins also didn’t miss in the chapter on the super league war

The real shame was teams like the cowboys warriors and Perth weren’t even in the competition for four weeks and they were joining a rival league

That’s why when news Ltd killed off Perth at their choice it was nothing but karma

Even the News Ltd grubs acknowledged what good leaders cannon and Arko were

Heck they offered Arko 500k to run their game which he of course turned down bc he wasn’t in it for himself

The NBL was truly booming and was genuinely challenging the footy codes.

Funnily enough, in 2024 it's getting close to being back to its heyday, and the standard is far greater than ever

Absolutely. It almost made those unbearable 2 years without a team worthwhile as we rose like the phoenix bigger and better than ever before. We have the great man George Piggins to thank for that (which is exactly what I did the day I got to meet him).
I love George Piggins but he’s also responsible for getting them where they were

He rejected the takeover/investment by souths juniors (1980s?) which would’ve meant they were cashed up and maybe never would’ve been kicked out

He did mortgage his house to help the club with its fight against news Ltd

He was also dead set against Crowe owning the club which would’ve been another mistake
