I’m suggesting that they arranged a deal on the travel costs for organisations they were funding with one of their companies they were a major owner of….
You don’t think the teams were paying full freight for flights do you as old mate is claiming? Ansett were in a formal sponsorship arrangement with Super League …I would be assuming cheaper flights would be part of the deal
In 1992 when the entry deal with ARL was done news ltd didnt own the reds, in 1994 when the reds were told they would have to pay for another comp side travel news ltd didnt own the reds.
it was end of 1994 early 1995 reds were offered to be bought out by news ltd, the additional unbudgeted costs were a big driver in the decisions made.
It was by all accounts a very acrimonious decision with half the board against and half for. the Ill feeling spread through out the WARL and it’s clubs and within a few years there was no reds, fewer WARL clubs and a registered player base that dropped from 10k to 2k. No one suffered more from the superleague war than rugby league in the West.
but we look forward not back, 2025 the year of reemergence of rugby league in the West?
