So if it’s delayed until May … you would prefer to wait until 2028 so they don’t have to rush the Perth junior teams ? cmon man …everything may not be perfect at the start ..and the juniors is one area you can make do if need be for a bit

Where do you think a team like that is going to run in comparison to the setups of the existing NRL clubs?

They'd struggle to win a game their 1st season setup that way

I want to make sure we have enough time to make year 1-5 a success. Not limp into the comp, be whipping boys and lose fan interest. Starting up an NRL club from nothing is no small job. So yeh if it means waiting another season and getting it right then I can live with it.

ok …I think a lot of other fans would prefer they join in 2027 if possible

theres struggling then theres struggling!
An extra year to build the systems in WA and NS and recruit better may be the difference between being bottom for 2-3 years and 10th-12th. That matters when you're trying to keep the excitement and momentum for fans and corporates of a new club.

Not sure why 2027 makes sense anyways other than to stagger it with PNG entry. Not unless they sign a tv deal with the incumbents to start a new deal a year earlier with 9 games.

End of day at this point any start date will do me!

12 months difference won’t make a lot of difference in respect of the development of the Perth junior base … this is going to be a long journey …see the Melbourne Storm for comparison of how this goes in an AFL dominated state …on the recruitment side …I think they would prefer 12 months head start over PNG

Correct they aren't getting out of the bottom 4 any sooner. Dolphins got 18 months, despite being in a RL heartland and having history behind them are favourites for the spoon this year.

If Perth are in that same boat in year 3 the club will be in huge trouble in a niche market that they will be. So they need better preparation as PNG are getting

Its more at reserve grade level than below that Im thinking. A year or two to recruit 20-22 year old talent to play reserve grade level would hopefully see the club having some talent coming through for year 1-3 and not just be reliant on picking up players from other clubs.

Yeh I get staggering with PNG, will be hard for two clubs to build rosters from scratch for same year. Even with PNG tax breaks you'd think Perth is going to be the preferred location to move to for most players?
Going to be a real arms race for talent for a few years!
Perth has the opportunity to raid England, Perth is already full of English, closer to home and time difference is better for talking with family. The weather and lifestyle wont hurt either! I hope we will have some talent scouts employed over there.

Dolphins came 10th last year (year 2) …and look better this year …

Perth would be happy with 10th Year 3…. That’s going to rely on how well they recruit …not how many juniors they can produce

The goal should be Top 8 after 3 probably 4 years …I think it’s unreasonable to expect much more than that …. They need to recruit couple of big name players and get lucky on a few younger guys … they will need a good CEO that can build a team … just as important as the first coach for them

Do they?

They still lack a 6.
May not have Flegler and a rookie coach.

time will tell but they have 10000000x better setup than Perth and PNG and still are a mid comp team at best

Perth would be love to be 10th but they need time to get a roster on hand.

They need 2-3 years to get the setup right

Yes …

They didn’t have Fegler last year either … and have recruited ok …

Coach is a question mark but has been inside the system 2 years already …

I think they will go well… Top 8 chance

Dolphins have finished where most expansion clubs in their first years have finished. But they have been very competitive and won enough to keep their new fans engaged. Thats the key.

norths system must not be too bad if theyve made 2 gfs in a row in cup with different squads. the gap where they suffer is after sg ball theres no current j flegg. so best kids in harold matts age go elsewhere as pathway doesnt lead to nrl.

also like @BuffaloRules says west aussie juniors are gonna take ages to get right. didnt storm and warrior only introduce junior sides not long ago after how much years of existence? the $120m gov cash is suppose to be funneled towards local west aussie juniors to assist in developing them to grade quicker. its a big job. bigger than a single nrl team can do especially when there's no historical set up like panthers etc who even then needed assistance to streamline the whole thing.

likewise the poach to english super league doesnt make much sense. a couple players sure but its not like historically in nrl era englishmen have come here and ripped in with great success. its getting better for sure but the overall sample size still reads as majority dont reach expectations and quickly move back to ESL.

it'll be nsw and qld supplying the quality juniors who have potential to get into grade for foreseeable future as thats where overwhelming majority of player resource exists.

papua is different. i think their side will be made up of majority pasifika heritage and papuan natives players. they might be competing with west aussie bears for players as negotiating but lets be real thats what it'll mostly be, negotiating and not actual signatures on paper. west aussie bears biggest threat will be the lower placed nrl sides who need to get off bottom of table and have fixed their caps up.

How did reds go in first two years compared to dolphins?!
Not sure relevance but:

Yr 1
Reds 11th in a 20 club comp
Dolphins 13th in a 17 club comp
Titans 12th in 16 team comp

Yr 2
Reds 16th in a 20 club comp
Dolphins 10th in a 17 club comp
Titans 13thrd in 16 team comp

Yr 3
Reds 8th in 10 team comp
Dolphins TBC
Titans 3rd in 16 team comp

So yr 1 Reds did better than Dolphins by some way, Yr 2 Dolphins did better.

Reds had 3 years to build the club from announcement to KO.
Dolphins 18 months
Titans 18 months

Dolphins named after 2021 season to start in 2023. Wonder how third season will compare?!

Into the craziness of the SL war by Yr 3 so data really not comparable at that point. Have added it in though, and have added Titans in as well for comparison. they had a slow first 2 years but then really performed for a short while.

Storm pointless adding in as they were an anomaly of having two existing clubs to draw from when they formed.
