WA BEARS

“The next franchise does not come into the NRL until 2028. It’s still a few years away."

So that confirms that the absolute the earliest the WA Bears can come in is 2028, if not later.

That's a bit disappointing. Could make recruitment for the WA Bears quite difficult.
That’s png

Pretty sure bears will be 2027 just they haven’t been announced yet

My primary priority is to just have a team here, but while we're awaiting any such news, just thought to cirlce back to the preferred name. I think we're all confident that Bears is the moniker, so how about the locality. 'Western' or 'Perth' or something else. IMO, the Eagles are already West Coast, so that shouldn't even be in the mix. Futher, as long as West Tigers exists, I'm more partial to Perth rather than Western.Unless Wests rebrand as the Macarthur Magpies or Tigers. Interested in others thoughts onto this.

Wests Tigers aren't going to rename, even though it's the worst roll-off-the-tongue name of any team.

Perth is fine. Western is too synonymous with the Reds and most people don't even recall they were renamed Perth in "97.

Yeah, I hate that name as well, just like St. George Illawarra, makes you wonder what they were thinking when they were sitting there making these things up.
The only conclusion I can come to is that they were thinking that many clubs have long-winded names that have been abbreviated over time, i.e Manly Warringah, Cronulla Sutherland, Canterbury Bankstown etc. and that they were thinking the same would happen with them eventually.

Western was a stupid name for a team that wants to have a wa identity

Everyone would’ve called it the bears

Perth is the one

Perth or West Coast for me in regards to the name.

How about something very unique like Westralia
Although it does bring the West element back into it. Kind of resonates with the WA secession movement that could generate a sense of unity and an own team identity to counteract the Bears involvement.

On the player depth issue, surely only a matter of time until proper reserve garde comes back? NRL can now afford it and it helps with the player depth issue. Sucks for Queensland cup clubs but it seems inevitable.

Qrl and nswrl are dead against it

So only if they can get a lot more money out of Pvl which they don’t deserve

He just upped the QRL grant from $20mill to $25mill. But yeh money always sweetens the deal. Most Qlnd NRL clubs are supportive of having a reserve grade side rather than QL cup sides. NSWRL cup is 90% there anyway so dont see what NSWRL objection would be.

That money was to stop the court cases

They will stick their hands out again for National reserve grade

Can’t see Pvl rocking the boat he needs their votes for expansion

I think they'll bring in the expansion clubs then look to reserve grade (or possibly national U21's) around that time, so maybe 2029.

With the next 10 years we could have NRL, reserve grade, U21's again.

I would love to see it back but it’s a battle that’s not worth having for a while

More important stuff to do

If he stays in power think we will go to 22 or 24 teams once juniors and money from the new expansion teams kicks in

I'm with you.

I would prefer Perth as my first choice. Won't be confused with the Western Force as a "Rugby" club. Won't be confused with Perth Glory as the sports are very different and you aren't stepping on the branding of the Eagles.

"WA" is the next best option. "WA" over 'Western Australia" as its not a representative team but the use of the initials could be seen as inconclusive of the entire state. For this team, I am against 'The Bears" as the club needs to be a Perth/WA based club to represent their local area. "The Bears" would just invite all the "Sydney centric" complaints.

Western is too close to "Wests" for mine. I also don't like the ambiguity of the name. i.e. Western of what/where?

What works best in a chant ?

WA *Clap clap clap* WA *Clap clap clap* WA *Clap clap clap*

OR

*Clap clap clap* Bears *Clap clap clap* Bears *Clap clap clap* Bears (Like the "Easts" chant)

You can't believe what he says at all. Wait till the announcement.
It's the problem with written quotes. Hard to get context.

Has he said it as there won't be any other new franchises until 2028 or does he mean it as things stand right now.

I'm hoping for 2027.

So youre way of thinking is to condense 15 q-cup teams into 4 nrl qld reserve teams? perthwrongs, ding dong. this would have a massive effect of resourcing or are ya forgetting the amount of queensland players via qrl systems the game produces?

ya so out of touch with how qrl and nswrl work in the grand scheme of things that its hilarious. just another wrong and incorrect dumb ass statement from the bloke with a 0.0001% batting average, perthwrongs.

ya realise some q-cup teams have programs that go beyond just club land yeah? they stretch into school programs etc. ya realise these program are synced into the overall streamline of how pathways are in place for qld based kids playing the game and how they can keep developing via junior and school comps into seniors? nah ya dont realise this, cause ya clown who has 0 idea about nswrl and qrl and how theyre fundamental to how the game as a whole is set up.

perthwrongs, ding dong
