A Perth team makes sense for the NRL, for whatever reason you might see fit:
- it’s just cool
- it helps our tv deal and tv ratings
- drive sponsorships and advertisers
- dots on a map / general perception about being a national game
- be present in the fourth biggest city in the country
- historically they’ve had more interest and participation than other fumble markets
- it’s a way to get north’s a foundation club back in the nrl and that will drive goodwill/interest/tv viewers

it’s true the nrl is more focused towards the pacific and a more international footprint which is great. But Perth does make sense for the competition.

Speaking of afl poorly copying nrl concepts, I’m looking forward to when they reintroduce their state of origin as a preseason Mickey Mouse exhibition competition which will absolutely pale in comparison. It will also highlight how Victoria dominant the afl is.

Again none of what you have listed, as positive as they are for the game, is changing the publics perception of NRL as a national game in Australia.
Adding Perth and eventually Adelaide and having them be well supported and successful will do that. But it will take a long time, the public perception that NRL is a 2 state game is well ingrained and will take some shifting.

Does it matter? Well NRL is waking up to the fact that maybe it does, or so it seems.
What the f**k are you clapping on about now? The NRL is played in 4 states and 2 countries, soon to be 3.

It's almost as if you live in an AFL dominated state isolated from the rest of the country... o.
Tell your Dockers mates that this reality only lives in their far flung little minds.

The Perth media still call it "rugby" most days.
Because it is 'rugby'.
Rugby League.
Why you on the east coast call it football when the sport doesnt even have football in its name is a mystery lol. Its nice you use part of the name of the English controlling body I suppose but doesn't really make any sense.

Australia's most viewed sport is a pretty convincing narrative when it comes to perception.

So adding a Perth nrl team that the wa media either hate or ignore is going to change the perception of the code in afl markets ?

Hasnt been called that in a century lol

NRL, SL, NSWRL, QRL, RLIF, RLEF, PNGRL, NZRL and so it goes on. No mention of football.
What are you arguing here, that people don't or shouldn't called rugby league footy? It certainly is called footy in all parts of nsw, qld and ACT. When someone in the office says did you watch the footy, 99% of the time they are referring to the nrl.

Colloquially, on the East Coast I suppose, it's "Rugby" = Rugby Union, "League" = Rugby League.

Its not 'The Media'. Its just The West. If NRL has any smarts it will be building relationships with the rest of the media in WA.

Im arguing that people calling rugby league 'rugby' isnt an issue lol It makes far more sense than calling it 'footy'.

He's in Perth... he's on here to report the public perception..dur !

I remember I was in a bar in Melbourne last year listening in on a chat where they were talking about how RL is a dying code. AFL people live in an alternate reality. They've taken over Brisbane, haven't you heard? Western Sydney next..
