The nrl won’t rush this, there is no urgent need for a 19th team. They’re not going to just add brisbane3 or nz2 quickly. PNG gets them the extra game for the next broadcast deal. If the commercials aren’t stacking up, and the nrl is feeling bullied by afl media and politicians, it’s a strong signal to just pull out and pick this up later - after they secure a massive new media deal that will give them more leverage to negotiate.

I still don't get how a national sporting competition does not cater for those not west of the East Coast.

Perth / WA need their own team - that does not include the Bears branding. Any reason why the Reds is never an option these days?

the NRL do a lot of things right but this is a major negative for them.

It’s very unlikely they’re going to get a more RL-friendly political environment than the current WA government.

Vlandys was lucky that the premier after McGowan was just as passionate about league. If it doesn't happen this time then I don't see that amount of govt money ever be offered again.

I wonder if PVL has an issue with the Minister assigned to the negotiations? She started off by talking tough - maybe he doesn’t want to work with her. Who knows - could be anything.
