Odds are that the NRL won't expand to 20 teams as planned if the Perth side falls over.

The NRL will probably sit at 18 for a while before considering expansion again, by which time the issues with the Dolphins and PNG will have made themselves apparent and will likely give pause to further expansion.

If the money sink that an NRL Europe would be happens, which is becoming increasingly likely with each passing month, then whoa boy, that could really put a spanner in the works. I mean there's a not insignificant chance that they could be backing Super League 2.0 in Europe by this time next year, and honestly it'd be in the best interest of the game if they did if things keep heading in the current direction they are in England at the moment.

Either way it'll be interesting times, especially with the AFL continuing to slowly progress, RU likely to go through something of a mini-renaissance with the Lions tour and WC coming up, Basketball continuing to grow at an unprecedented rate, and international sports taking more and more interest in the market and talent pool.
Union is having a renaissance after they just killed off a team and average Crowds are 10k and the afl idea of expansion is going to a tiny state like Tasmania and forcing stadium upgrades that will ruin their credit rating

Lmao

Christchurch seems a no brainer with that new stadium… but there is not going to be a pot of Govt money for the NRL as well…

Also the Warriors don’t want competition.., so probably not happening in the next couple of years … to me that is the biggest opportunity lost - NZ2

Stadiums are already done

Nz produces juniors already wa doesn’t

Apples and oranges

Canterbury colours are bears colours

I wanna find out what happened re Perth

If I had to bet cookie has tried to backtrack on promises and Pvl had called him out

I still reckon this is all just negotiation and the deal will get resolved last minute

It’s exactly what happened with png

lol - what’s with the fascination with the Bears ?
I’d prefer that NZ chooses something that fits with their own culture ..

Perth maybe not dead … looks like Cook maybe doesn’t seem to care as much though … probably turns out that it’s harder than he thought it was going to be

This might mean chch comes in as team 19 instead

Which is what should’ve happened all along
Why not team 18 in 2027.
Everyone acting like this is a ballsup are completely missing the picture.
The NRL put out to tender for new clubs, got to see exactly what is out there and what they can get. The NRL have had all these bids on their desk the whole time . They can play hardball with Perth because they have other options, 4 just in NZ .
Now Perth has a lesson to learn if it wants to be team 20..or... NZ3, Sunshine Coast, Central Coast, Ipswich, Melbourne 2, Fiji...

No, this deathriding of the Perth bid is moronic, you're better than that. Perth is a great market, better than Christchurch and to say otherwise is stupid. As much as you may dislike Perth Red, play the ball, not the man.
Huh? On what metric does it beat Christchurch?
New stadium
New rivalry
Increased nz tv deal
New market
Talent pool

Assuming the Perth expansion is off, the other mooted areas of possible expansion like NZ or another QLD team have a history of league support. Would the Bears be part of any deal with those areas if expansion proceeds? What happens to those 200k Bears fans who were promised they will be back in the NRL by PVL?

The NRL will obviously survive this and probably continue to forge ahead and should sign a big TV deal, and maybe this is just a smokescreen and a deal has been done for Perth, but it is not a good look how it has dealt with the expansion process. Potentially only 1 new team that is only getting up because Australian taxpayers are funding it.

That’s exactly what’s happening

And the wa premier knows this so if he does pull away he’s does it knowing there’s a good chance it goes elsewhere

again with the Bears ? Do you really believe that 200k thing ? seriously …F the Bears …what have they got to do with a team in NZ ?

I would have to say that over this whole expansion process, PVL in particular has got a lot of it wrong , and come across as pretty arrogant .. the whole bid process was essentially a waste of time ,… he needed to say from the beginning what the expectations were so people could understand the costs and not waste their time ..

Nrl literally singled out nz for expansion

Then the Australian govt came in and blindsided them with a 600 million dollar png bid

Then the wa govt also did the same and caught the attention of the arl

Nobody has been misled bids just aren’t up to the standards the arl want or think that places aren’t valuable enough for a team

Cook hasnt been the easiest person to deal with since day one either

I don’t agree ….

PVL called for a bids which mentioned a “license fee proposal ” …what were the expectations around that ? Like $20-30m or something ? But seemingly there is lots more required …Govt support for a COE and a juniors development program, money for stadium upgrades … NZ were never going to put Govt money into these things so their bids were a waste of time …although at least the Christchurch bid could leverage the new stadium…poor old Wellington … no hope

No I don't believe the 200k nor what alot that PVL has said like that PNG and Perth will triple the NRL's revenues. I was being sarcastic when I mentioned the 200k.

I totally agree with your second paragraph. Expansion has been handled very poorly. It just appears that PVL and the rest of head office have gone with whoever was willing to give them the most money rather than the NRL strategically targeting where they want the next team or teams to be placed.
