WA BEARS

This whole dispute is about money …. Here your Bears are still to decide after about 2 years if they will contribute even $1… I doubt the NRL are even taking this into account in their decision making process

so it’s easy from the Bears perspective to be the party that is “causing no problems “
It'd be totally Vlandys to announce the next expansion team as "Brisbane Jets", reviving the old rumoured Ipswich/Newtown link that was talked about last year..just to spite Perth AND Norths, and to set-up a messy slog between Perth and Christchurch for the last expansion spot getting us to 20 teams.

Well … the WA govt ain’t buying in to the same degree ….

Tasmania is a different state and AFL is actually their No 1 game
Sure, it may be flawed, but imo it’s what has motivated the nrl in their shift away from private ownership. I remember V’landys even using the Tasmania funding in justifying what they should receive from wa.

Yeah mate … who know really what the next thing will be …

It highlights that there isn’t much of a plan behind this expansion program ….

I don't thinkel AFL have anything to do with it but they'll be pissing themselves laughing.

Nothing about this bid has made sense at all. It just gets stranger.

It wouldn't change that no. There's many nuances to this, a revitalise HBF sure. A run down HBF .. not so sure..

It doesn't make any sense anyway. Why wouldn't the WA government want a brand new beautiful stadium?
Christchurch are building one with no where near the finances of the WA Government.
Perth want to be a big city and attract workers, then they have second class facilities.
It screams of AFL f**kery

and I have no doubt that getting the $600m from the PNG bid process has clouded the NRL thinking as well …
Each situation is different with varying degrees of risk and difficulty.., so I think each should be treated on their own merits and not compared with any other

That would be so NRL expansion. Let's just put another team into SEQLD.

So what’s happened is the terms and conditions within the prior made in-principle agreement were broken by WA Gov. This applies to the stadium funding.

What was agreed to last year and pre-election wasn’t upheld when the parties met on Thursday. The numbers that the NRL asked never changed.

NRL went into the meeting believing it was a simple chat of how they’d announce the new franchise, instead were blind side by the WA Gov pulling out stadium upgrade funding. The grassroots funding was right in the money though.

It isn’t over and isn’t the end. Just pushed back a few months. It gives NRL time to finalise the broadcast deal and it’ll give WA time to reassess their stadium upgrade commitment.
Thanks for the update (I'm unable to like posts on my phone).

That's incredibly shitty of the WA Government if that is the case and links in with Cook pleading with the feds for stadium funding in the week.

This whole expansion has been handled poorly by both sides in reality and in detriment to the sport and the NRL.

After the misfires of October and now, I can't see this team happening.

I agree, time to call it. A bad idea from the start and has only got worse.

The WA govt has been saying for months that won't be putting any more funding into the NRL bid.

And when he are true to their word, suddenly they are the bad guys?

They are committing 25m in return for nearly a billion dollars in infrastructure funding. The Australian & Tasmanian taxpayer is quite literally subsidising the expansion of a billion dollar sporting code. govt is putting
tassie govt is putting in $495mill, afl putting in $151mill

So if wa govt is expected to put $300mill in then it’s fair to expect to see nrl commit $100 mill or so to the perth bears?

You think? lol
it’s been a massive fishing exercise. I’ve always had my doubts they were serious about 20 clubs and Perth was just a back up for club 18 if png fell over. That there has been 10 private ownership bids and all been turned down says something.

Not surprised if the stadium issue has caused the latest bs. Nrl allowing talks to drag into the election and become a political issue put cook in a corner and he probably felt he needed to back away from the $300-500mill investment being reported. Dropping the stadium upgrade he could announce that govt was committing $100mill or so and no one would have blinked and he comes out of it looking a strong negotiator for WA. The fact the new sports minister kept mentioning hbf is being equal to many nrl current stadiums was a red flag this might be in the agenda.

shame as next phase of hbf upgrade is needed. But it isn’t essential and if nrl was serious about a club in perth it shouldn’t be a deal breaker. stadium could have been parked and brought into play in a few years.

maybe Albo will swoop in and save the day?

Given it’s a labor government I can believe that. Can’t trust them.

It isn’t over and isn’t the end. Just pushed back a few months.
Surely we don’t have a few months to get this started for the 2027 season?

It gives NRL time to finalise the broadcast deal
If the NRL doesn’t a broadcast deal without the Perth announcement surely that would cause concern of the club not being admitted for the term of that broadcast deal?

it’ll give WA time to reassess their stadium upgrade commitment.
What makes you so sure that will happen?

Sounds like the fake-blonde new WA sports minister has meddled with the agreement.

49% of what! Lol
so perth gets a club half owned by nrl and half owned by north Sydney? Maybe is time to pull the plug on this farce.
Keep your knickers on.

You literally asked a question in this post and blew up within the same post about something you don’t even understand.

Do you see why people on here think you’re a punish?

True colours? I’ve been pretty consistent with my views when it comes to tying the Bears in to the NRL’s expansion plans.
Of course as a Manly fan your opinion would be that. How original… not.

No im referring to when they were told the business case doesn’t stack up so they went back with a license fee and was still told not interested.
Ohhh you’re referring to the part where they tried to save face after showing themselves to not be worthy to be part of the NRL. Got it.

Yeh fancy thinking a deal is about negotiating , it’s like deals are done only in one go lol.

how this has played out

nrl didn’t want a wa branded club as they wanted a Sydney club returning
Then after the wa bid accepted a Sydney partnership nrl turned down the western bears bid because they wanted a license fee
Then turned down the western bears bid when they offered a license fee because they didn’t like the logo and one of the investors
Now turned down the wa govt bid allegedly as they dont like hbf park and want a motza spending on it which the govt is refusing

You’ll have to forgive my cynicism.
