WA BEARS

The problem seems to be that the NRL ( ie the Clubs that comprise it ) doesn’t really seem to have any plan or long term strategy for expansion ..it seemingly is all about the bottom line and how much money will be passed back to them in return for their agreement to admit another member to their group and divide the pie further …seems a pretty dumb strategy for a sporting league to undertake …

The game is growing using this model. I said originally these proposed bids of PNG, Perth and NZ/Pacific are vanity projects for the League.

They don't need Perth. They need a strong bid that is healthy the location is irrelevant

I think Perth will still happen but will be put back a couple years. PNG in 28’, Perth 30’, 20th team 33’.
The new broadcast deal for 28’ will probably go for 5 years like the recent deals. The NRL for the next Broadcasting rights will be selling 9 games a week. So the next new teams will be staggered in similar to the dolphins, meaning we’ll go back to a bye again during the next rights deal.

Are you aware of the SL war? Only a very short time ago, Rugby League went all out on expansion and it went broke.

Souths , 100 years of history- gone.
WA - gone
SA- gone
SEQ crushers- gone
GC- gone
Balmain- gone
Magpies- gone
Manly- gone
St George Dragons- gone
Illawarra steelers- gone
North Sydney Bears- gone

Absolutely devastating to the game, what? 27 years ago?

We're only just back on our feet.
I know, let's just blow the f**king lot again....

We've got Souths back.
We got GC back.
We got having a second team in Brisbane back.

We're only just coming back and if we want to expand again, we better be sure as shit it's guaranteed to work!!!

Sydney lost a lot of clubs! To carry on like they're being to protective is incredibly insensitive.

So WA needs to get it's shit together! Big time! It can't be a drag! It needs top notch facilities and funding!

The WA government has been well short of the mark and we all know why!!!

The one team we do have, Will create a 4th Tier 1 test nation as a result.

We have Fiji in lower grades, Melbourne and Auckland now with teams.

QLD are continuing to have Regional sides in the QCup. So there are more areas with a pipeline there is no need to just admit a side for dots on a map

The biggest advantage of the bid other than bears link was the govt investing 500 million.

Now that’s been cut to 120 million

This compared to 1 billion for the Tasmanian afl team and 850 million for png

Chch and Dunedin have spent the equivalent of 800 million on their two South Island stadiums

Hbf park in its current format isn’t fit for purpose

It’s Its short sighted from a govt with a huge majority and a surplus on the budget of 3 or 4 billion

No you didn’t ,,,, you spoke about something that happened 30 years ago …and nothing to do with their current expansion strategy or lack there of
I highlighted the history to frame for you exactly what we should be expecting from our expansion strategy.
I gave you past reference.
I gave you the current reference.
And the strategy for going forward.

You're just as bitter and salty as PR and just want to blame the NRL and have a whinge.
Go ahead, but your attitude seems to be that of the WA government. You have no concerns for the NRL and its struggles, the struggles the Sydney clubs have been through...just gimme gimme gimme.

you spoke of the SL war and it’s repercussions … something RL was very much an innocent bystander in , that was fought by two media empires 30 years ago over Pay Tv…which itself is now all but superceded and of limited relevance to what is happening today .., it was a pretty unique set of circumstances unlikely to be repeated …

If you want to dispute what I said then feel free to …but at least use arguments that are of relevance in 2025 and beyond

I think you hit on a point many are missing - Christchurch (and Dunedin as a secondary market) have the huge outlay from Government (local and central) ALREADY in the form of decent enclosed stadiums. It might not matter that there's little else to add-in.

Sure the business case for a team needs to operationally stack-up (including more value from TV), BUT as far as stadium infrastructure goes, they're more than just acceptable & on the way to upgrades - NZ 2 will be top-tier for their very first home game.

All that remains is checking-off the business case adds-up (including an acceptable entry fee, where the level of acceptable is solely determined by the NRL), and making sure pathways are going to be nurtured (so they generate their fair share - or more - of talent going into the player pool), and NZ2 is set.

Nz is probably the biggest single source of nrl talent today

Nz2 would be a gold mine for juniors together with png

Plus nz2 bring value to the nz tv deal and also more content for Aussie tv whilst also benefitting int rugby league

And crowds in nz especially outside Auckland have been strong and showing they need more nrl games outside of Auckland

Nz is a huge growth market for rugby league somewhere the sport can make huge inroads

And the two South Island stadiums will be far superior to an upgraded hbf park let alone one in its current state where the main stands is embarrassing and the other side very basic

No. Whatever is going on now doesn’t mean not accepting a poor bid from a poor consortium last year was wrong.

All NRL fans know this. Why was this added to your post?
Why was it poor? 6 very succesful business people, some with a history of supporting local wa rugby league, one with a history of running a successful prof sports club, willing to invest $30mill and pay a $20mill license fee and put up guarantees and bank protections. Stop believing the haters rhetoric.
