A proper world class 30k stadium isn't much to ask for in exchange for a club in the world's biggest Rugby comp and the only real way of selling WA to the lucrative NSW and QLD markets. AFL just doesn't have the eyeballs here to be effective in that.

The 30k stadium isn't even just for the NRL, it's for soccer and Union too and for all West Aussies being that it's a state asset and all.

Getting rid of that mild request is a slap in the face while the AFL play out of the Taj Mahal in the same city.
How is a stadium in Perth, the only way for WA to appeal to QLD and NSW??

Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas said he was pleased the Liberals’ advocacy had put what would have been an “appalling deal for WA” to bed.
“There’s nothing wrong with an NRL team for Perth. We’re a big city. We should have one, but we’ve got to have it at the right price, and everybody needs to know how much that is going to cost,” he said.
“I don’t understand, why an NRL deal is required for grassroots funding of rugby league in Perth and Western Australia”

Or strikes me as rather perverse that stadium standards are (apparently) he "show stopper" for Perth expansion given the status of some suburban grounds that host NRL games to this day - including some that are permanent home grounds.

Is Saffioti providing a running commentary to The West about whether they have heard a formal response back from the NRL?

I thought this was supposed to be the Liberal rag that hated the Labor party?
Definitely sounds like someone is trying to control the narrative.

WA Government stuffed up.

They are using the nrl to appear tough. The way the treasurer in particular has talked in public about the nrl is not only disrespectful, it’s pretty unprofessional, particularly given it’s about an organisation looking to bring investment to the state. It’s also ironic that they keep claiming the nrl has only talked through the Sydney media, yet the only people we have heard from in the last month is the WA gov talking through the WA media… before they have apparently even heard anything from the nrl. I think if it were up to Cook we would have a deal, but obviously there’s a faction lead by the treasurer who have been trying to kill it, probably on behalf of afl stakeholders.
Really? This latest flurry of WA media came directly in response to the Sydney article that has clearly come about after a leak from the NRL on 4th April

Just to remind you of the timeline of this as you seem to have forgotten:

April 3rd Cook refuses to discuss details of NRL offer - The West

April 4th SMH and WWOS report that the NRL is disappointed with the offer and that they will be turning it down

April 6th Sports minister expresses disappointment of hearing through the media that the NRL are turning the offer down

April 7th Roger Cook outlines offer that has been made to NRL.

So as you can see the response from the WA govt has come about after the NRL leaked to the SMH. But yeh its WA's fault. That the NRl werent on the phone on April 4th to Cook to explain the leaked story is disgraceful.

Its bizarre. That the NRL would walk away from this golden opportunity, quite possibly the only time it will ever present itself, for the sake of the redevelopment of one stand is just nonsensical. Like I said they keep putting up reasons to say no. This is just the latest.

“There was a process . . . a private sector consortia that put forward a submission that was rejected outright by the NRL, which I think was disappointing, because you got a lot of passionate people, community people and business people behind that bid that was rejected.
it’s ground hog day … again

Rita is still disappointed about something that happened 6 months ago…

Better let the opposition newspaper that criticises us every day know …again

A place in the NRL comp. The only sport that will allow NSW and QLD eyeballs on WA and WA sponsors on mass
Except for every other sport you mean. Cricket and AFL are much better for national exposure than the NRL.
And why do you guys think that people in Perth gives a rats arse about NSW and QLD? We think as much about your state as you think about WA. Hardly ever.

They should have spoken up to the NRL then, forced them back to the negotiation table. It's useless to whinge now

NSW and QLD make up 55-60% of the population and are incredibly lucrative markets for sponsors and indeed tourism WA. No other sport, including cricket provides the cut through in those markets as RL does.

wonder how accurate the leak is... Nine might be getting shafted in the new broadcast negotiations...
