FYI:

At least 2 of the ARLC commissioners will vote to approve the WA NRL license in the form of Perth Bears RLFC on the provision that strict financial terms and conditions are met.

Therefore the ball will be back in WA’s court in the view of those 2 commissioners. WA Gov will need to come back with a renewed offer for WA to be formally accepted.

However, I am unsure of the stance of the other 6 commissioners. I also don’t believe a breakdown of yes vs. no will be reported on, it’ll be based on majority vote.

A “No” vote will be to park WA expansion until a later timeframe. Likely 6-9 months down the line. Re-negotiations would then be restarted. But status of broadcast deal negotiations will dictate time frames to recommence expansion discussions.

Honestly, I live in Perth, and I have no idea the Force still exist or when their season is on, ect. But then again, I have no idea about how the Glory are going or where and when the aussie rules teams are playing, ect, as I don't read the news, watch tv (apart from NRL games) and barely hear any radio, so it's amazing at what can be ignored when you avoid mainstream media!
I think it's fair to be say he same for Aleague and Rugby anywhere on the East Coast these days to.

They are firmly 2nd tier(maybe 3rd?)

Perth will get few home fta games

Thursday and Friday time slots don’t work for Perth anyway 5 pm local time

Sunday 1 pm or so Perth time can work but nine won’t want many of their games anyway

Saturday from 630 to 930 est or Sunday 4 but more 615 will be the main time slot
The AFL have had Thu and Fri games on before, why does that work?

V'landys and the commission are just thinking about this wrong. It's about growing the game at a time in its history when it's never been stronger and so attractive as a product. The AFL knows this and desperately wants this bid to fall apart. Thats reason enough to go into WA lock, stock and barrel.

Takes money to grow the game. It's about bang for your buck. Right now the NRL are also negotiating a possibility of buying into SL. Not possible if they blow it all on one team is it mate?
I think they know exactly how to think about it. So far, government has fully funded 1 bid..cost to NRL $0
IF done right expansion cost nothing and the capital can be used to buy up assets and future proof the game.

What happened to two weeks of urgent negotiations?

100% right - rugby league has the kind of momentum that makes expansion the next step (like it was in 1992-95) - AND resources to do it right (unlike 1992-1995). It would be insane to let this slip.

I can see the Perth situation being sorted out, maybe not now but whether it be in a few months or even the subsequent tv deal and the PVL supporters saying what a great job he did by not settling for what is on the table now. The 'I told you so' will be flowing.

While Perth is not a hotbed of rugby league, it has substantial wealth that dwarfs PNG and should have a team in the NRL. People on here say that the NRL has survived and grown and doesn't need Perth and will continue to grow. Well the same can be said for PNG and NZ2. The NRL is where it is now without those 2 places as well. Not a fan of a PNG team as only getting a start due to government handouts but agree that NZ2 should come in at some stage.

Thanks - What would be different in 6-9 months ? I assume the AFL and Channel 7 will still be there in Cooks ear amd limiting what’s on offer ? We now know the stadium upgrade is off the table for a couple of years …

The problem appears to be that the NRL think they hold some sort of substantial bargaining power here.

Plus won't it be a weakened position to go to TV and say, we only have one confirmed team and it's in one of the poorest countries in the world?

Seems that way … if they aren’t going to approve them now , I can’t see them turning around so quickly after the TV deal has just been negotiated to do so …. Zero urgency

What happened to two weeks of urgent negotiations?
In Aug the WB were in, in Oct they were out, in Nov deal was allegedly agreed and imminent, In Dec it was hopefully before Xmas, in Mar it was in a couple of weeks, now the commission were supposed to be meeting today but Vlad said theres been no meeting called, now its they are all catching up in Perth on Saturday.
Honestly I dont believe anything anymore and will just wait and see what actually happens when it happens.

Bears and WA fans be like arrrrrrghhhhh

PVL/Abdo & the 2 commissioners can make this happen this weekend, it all comes down to the WA Govt and if they’re scared of the AFL media backlash
They are politicians, of course they are scared of public opinion, their jobs literally depend on it!

public opinion or the AFL's opinion?
In an AFL state a % of public opinion and AFL opinion are the same. Stadiums are a hard sell at best of times. Vast majority of the public are not sports fans and will always think stadium spend would be better used for things that matter to them such as hospitals and schools. Then you have the sporting public who are happy to see stadium spend on their sport. In an AFL state the support for a rectangular stadium spend is always going to be low.
Normally it doesn't matter so much and it can get pushed through anyway with some BS justification (see Allianz) but in an election race thats never going to happen. I mean look at the recent stadium fiasco in NSW where you'd think the public would be all for spending on RL stadiums yet the NSw govt pulled back from the $800mil committment to a $300mill Penrith only spend, eventually.
The major upgrade of HBF in 2012 was justified on the back of Western Force needing a home (they were playing at Subi oval) and the notion that the WA Reds bid would get up in NRL. The next upgrade was justified on back of 2023 world cup needs. At moment when you have Glory drawing 7-9k and Force drawing 10-12k its hard to justify why HBF needs $200mill spending on it to that stadium skeptical public.

I hope we can get the grassroots funding sorted, the stadium upgrade is parked and we get launched in 2027, at end of the first season they can announce plans to upgrade HBF park when there is far less political spotlight on it.

Could someone explain to me the urgency of the tv deal ?
why can’t they spend a few months negotiating Perth Bears and then go to market for broadcast rights ?
