Hopefully Bears fans can stop deathriding the other clubs now they're back.
Welcome back, it's good to see the Bears out of hibernation.

Cook still isn't publicly saying the deal is done.
I assume he doesn't want anything hurting WA Labor chances at the Federal Election.
So whomever leaked this from the NRL has f**ked him over a bit.
They will struggle for a while IMO … it’s still a massive leap from u/18 level to the NRL

If you're thinking "2030 at the earliest", I reckon a good plan would be Perth (2027), Christchurch (2029) then PNG (2031) - it staggers three teams over 4 years, PLUS PNG would be the team that takes us from 9 games per weekend to 10, spinning a bit more rights money to mitigate the risk.
Would love more detail on that.- $25 million on content over the next five years;
It was a dig at Bears fans on Facebook in years past deathriding us when we were going through our well documented dark times clamouring for us to be kicked out Souths style and for them to take our place.???????
Facebook groups are the bottom of the barrel. I wouldn’t take anything on social media as a representation of any club’s full fan base.It was a dig at Bears fans on Facebook in years past deathriding us when we were going through our well documented dark times clamouring for us to be kicked out Souths style and for them to take our place.
I love your optimism, but "Govt spending money" is always going to be spun negatively by Australia's commercial media outlets.Nah, id guess the opposite.
Labor and NRL leaked together to get some good news put (officially “we have nothing to comment at this time”)
Labor might try to get it locked in this week and Albo gets to join the formal announcement in the last week of the campaign.
As an announcement, it will appeal to West Australians AND the whole east cost.
as for as election anniversary ho, this would be one of the best you could hope for!!
Unfortunately a packed stadium in PNG isn't generating much income though.I actually this this will be good.
the team could lose every game for 10 years and they will still pack out the stadium every week.
So basically the Knights…
Fair point, BUT I was talking about the week-in, week-out scheduling aspect.That maths is dumb.
every new team adds 12 games to the season. That is all.
This is the actual order that expansion should be happening. There's no way Christchurch won't be 1000× more prepared for entry than PNG in 2029.If you're thinking "2030 at the earliest", I reckon a good plan would be Perth (2027), Christchurch (2029) then PNG (2031) - it staggers three teams over 4 years, PLUS PNG would be the team that takes us from 9 games per weekend to 10, spinning a bit more rights money to mitigate the risk.
“While the WA government will not pay a licence fee, a further $20 million will be committed to a Centre of Excellence with a promise that there will likely be an upgrade of their home ground - HBF Stadium.”![]()
*Under the terms of the final agreement over Perth, it is understood the WA government has committed to spend:
- $35 million on grassroots football over the next seven years;
- $25 million on content over the next five years; and
- nearly $6 million on helping with costs of the new side.
While the WA government will not pay a licence fee, a further $20 million will be committed to a Centre of Excellence with a promise that there will likely be an upgrade of their home ground - HBF Stadium.
This masthead understands that the ARL Commission will run the new Perth franchise for a minimum of five years before it becomes a member-based club.*
Some good detail here that I haven't seen in other articles. The most intriguing one to me is the 25 million dollars for content over 5 years.
Interesting what it could be for, assuming it would cover 2 origin games in that period plus a double header and game at hbf each year.
From memory they paid 5 million for an origin and double header for 1 year a while back which would leave a lot of value to be recouped in other content to reach 25 million. Could they get magic round one year or something similar. Maybe just some more double headers and games at hbf until 2027?
Yeh absoloutely, it's also a good way of disguising a license fee imo.Would love more detail on that.
Origin cycle seems set to be perth/adelaide/melbourne for the foreseeable future with auckland the only other real possibility, so a maximum of 2 in perth over 5 years.Perth already has Origin in 2028, Melbourne is 2026, so 2027 & 2029 and beyond are up for grabs. One more Origin 2027-2030 and a double header and a HBF Park game next year would be safe bets. What content they’re getting for $25m will be interesting to see.

lol, not unless they give us double the salary cap! Look at how hard Redcliffe found it to land star players in year 1. reality is if you want to prise a quality player away from his current team you have to pay significant overs. A solid experienced squad with one big name player and some SL talent will do for year 1 and 2.The telegraph has put together a fantasy team for the Bears with players that will be off contract. Pretty handy team

For PNG to be successful, it'll need as much runway as possible.
You could throw Christchurch together in 6 months and it'll be successful.
