“Having the Bears as their second team” isn’t going to increase the viewership of the game; it’s not going to increase Kayo/Foxtel sign-ups.

Focusing on an already saturated market isn’t going to increase the profitability of the league or the TV rights deal.

The biggest benefits of this deal is the location; being in Western Australia. Not satisfying a few nuffies who want another team based in Sydney
Having the bears back will increase Foxtel subscribers and nine tv ratings more than the gain in wa viewers

When you combine the two together then yes the club does generate a decent amount of new subs (if I had to guess 50 to 100k over time)

North shore is Waratahs and swans territory

How many people in Sydney will watch the Bears that don’t already watch NRL on Foxtel/Kayo? I seriously struggle to comprehend the idea that NRL fans would just not watch for 25 years; but would return because of a nickname of a club based on the other side of the country.

Compare that to how many people might sign up in Western Australia? Remembering that Foxtel/Kayo subscription rates in WA are lower as all Eagles/Freo games are shown on Free to air in Western Australia (just on delay)

50 to 75k new subs in Sydney easy (Perth would be 20 to 30k new subs tops)

If you struggle to understand than you haven been following this thread its been discussed loads of times

The benefit is it also takes fans away from the swans and Waratahs

It’s a massive and rich part of Sydney

Foxtel already has loads of subs in wa for afl lol

They don’t need to pay twice to watch the Perth nrl team

How? Broadcasting is the game’s primary source of revenue by a big margin.
The boost of "ratings" in Sydney will be a one off sugar hit.

I.e after a season or two people who weren't Bears fans (I.e anyone under 50) won't be too fussed anymore.

I tend to agree with this.

The Bears didnt have a big following when they were in the NRL. I find it hard to belive they now have 250k fans out there.

I would have prefered the Reds return but the Bears is better nothing and relocating teams has worked for the AFL.

If it’s a “rich part of Sydney”, aren’t the residents more likely be paying for Foxtel/Kayo?

If you think that the same percentage increase of subscribers will happen in Sydney (50 to 75k in a city of approx 6 mil) compared to Perth (20k to 30k in a city of approx 2.5 mil) then you’re either massively overestimating the amount of disengagement in the NRL in Northern Sydney OR completely misunderstanding the sporting landscape in Perth.

In Western Australia the Foxtel/Kayo sign-up rates are significantly lower than in the Eastern states. It’s because the AFL shows every Eagles and Dockers game on FTA into Perth.

There is no Australian NRL team that has the equivalent luxury; so to watch your club every week, you sign up to Foxtel/Kayo. The same as if you’re a Victorian AFL fan, you sign up to Foxtel/Kayo.

There is less motivation for Western Australian sporting fans to sign up to Kayo/Foxtel; especially with the time difference in much of the content focusing on the east coast.

If you don’t know how rich the north shore is then you have a lot to learn tbh

The amount of wealth in the north shore doesn’t support your claim that the “Bears” brand name would lead to 50k-75k new Foxtel/Kayo subscribers.

—Wealthier people are more likely be have already subscribed as it’s less of a cost impact for them

— The North Shore of Sydney is still in the same city as 9 NRL teams. What is a team based in Perth going to do to convince them to watch, that the exisiting 9 teams couldn’t do?

The Bears brand hasn’t been at top level in 25 years. Half of the desired age demographic for advertisers were aged 10 or under when the Bears left the league.

Some people already will have it

It’s not rocket science

Adding a team back into an area where rugby league is the major sport in a city will lead to a growth in subs

Sydney isn’t Perth

There's 5 million people in Sydney mate.
They're not going to be interested in a former Sydney teams return?
Again, 5 million people, Australia's largest city and RL heartland.

Are you just bored or something?
Nobody's this dense.
