During the expansion process, I’ve been against the Bears teaming up with the Perth bid , not because of any personal dislike for the old Bears team, but I know from experience how parochial Perth people are , and the disdain they have for anything associated with the East Coast …

Having said that and after closely watching the way this has played out , I’m confident in saying that if it wasn’t for the Bears association, we would not be sitting here today with a Perth team coming into the competition in 18 months . This negotiation saga from PVL will not go down as one of his career moments …he has over estimated what the franchise was worth , and the personal appeal to Cook…you could also question the arrogance shown towards the private bidder who went to effort and expense to try to get the nod…

Compared to the original asking price proposed to the State Govt , PVL has had to eat a turd sandwich in the end to get the team across the line, and my take is that it was his very public support of “bringing back the Bears for their hundreds of thousands of fans” that eventually convinced him to swallow his ego and sign off on the deal when it was headed off the rails

Anyway …onwards and upwards now …there needs to be a focus on making this team Perth/WA’s … the proposed team name change is a great start there… I would also have a nod in the logo as well… maybe an outline of the state of WA behind the Bear’s head …

I hope the old ( they must be all 50+ by now right) North Sydney Bears fans understand that although they get to watch a Bears named team and their old colours run around each week …. this is Perth’s team and they can’t be agitating for more games in Sydney/Central Coast or even a move back East when the inevitable tough times happen for any expansion team ….i have my doubt that some will remain silent on this , considering the divisions we still see from the likes of the Wests Magpies and Balmain dinosaurs…

pretty sure theres 4 bears fans in this thread alone who are on or under 40. this 50+ age thing is ridiculous and a myth.

to further prove what im saying do you actually think people like the literal hundreds of bears nsw cup, jersey flegg, sg ball and harold matts plus girls teams players over the years and their families dont support bears in some capacity considering they have family who has played for their respective bears line ups in the last 26 years since their last nrl appearance?

also do you think qrl clubs that were once brl clubs have fans who aged out because their comp didnt become the national one like nswrl to nrl did? ie norths, souths, easts, redcliffe, ipswich, burleigh, tweed etc etc etc

the rest of your post is goodun though mate, i agree with large parts of it.

Are they ? I get the vibes they are 50 plus … but of course it’s hard to tell for sure …

We’ll see how this plays out over the next decade or so … my predictions are that the people being quoted in the media to bring them back East will be old men

Outside of current players and Danika Mason, 50+ year old men are practically the only people talking about anything rugby league in the media anyway.

It’s such a predictable controversy for this shitty clickbait obsessed NRL media to exploit shortly after they join, that I wouldn’t be surprised if one of them has written it already with a blank spot for the quotes of whichever ex North Sydney players and officials they can find to go on the record about it …

Asides from that, the NRL aren’t stupid they must have some good intel that reviving the bears brand and attaching it to Perth has strong upsides. I’m starting to see that goodwill in the media on the east coast at least, this team will definitely get a lot of interest on the east coast by being called bears that’s guaranteed. Now will this translate to more tv viewers, more members, more sponsors etc I don’t know but it seems like it would.

I am sceptical, i think the NRL just doesn't want to be burdened by GWS type situation in Perth. They can probably rely on the Bears at least drawing high ratings on the east coast and gain a few thousand members straight away. Goodwill in the media doesn't mean shit, they are so deep in their own self interested agendas, anything reported by newscorp or nine should be taken with a grain of salt.

GWS is it own unique little problem. Like the name....should have just called it " this general area Giants " lol
With an arrow pointing to the centre of Rugby league heartland lol

Young boys and girls will grow up dreaming of representing their Greater Western Sydney....lol

Worst expansion team in Australian sporting history folks .

Old world thinking
For old world fans.
Exactly. Look at how many Australians support the NBA, NFL & EPL clubs. The percentage that have seen those club play in person. Would be quite low. Even less have seen those clubs play at the clubs home ground but are still emotionally connected to those clubs.
I would argue that for many of those `fans` their attachment to that club would be far more of a fashion accessory than a passion. They prob never watch a game, maybe a final, and prob hardly ever even watch highlights. It`s highly unlikely Bears will attract that sort of support on the east coast but of course they`d love it if they could.

The WA Bears best chance of attracting a supporter base in Sydney, and the one I`d prefer to see them have, is that upper socio-economic demographic out of Greater Northern Sydney pining for something historically associated with their part of Sydney.

It`s good for the game to have glamour clubs.

I`m really hoping that the Bears angle for this market, the NRL needs another club, like the Roosters, who appeal more to that demographic unlike the more working-class suburban feel that the majority of our other clubs have.

I doubt that the Middle Aged Housewives of Mosman are interested in Rugby League or their teenaged boys playing it.

Their Lawyer/Banker/Business men/Doctor husbands are not going to waste their time watching 1 game a week yet alone multiple games on the TV like most working class and some middle-class suburban men do.

Sydney is already an over saturated market as it is.

Their sons might not play it but their dads might sponsor it

And this isn’t a Sydney team anyone anyone saying it is is just trolling

North Sydney is on par with the eastern suburbs in terms of the greatest accumulation of wealth in Australia

But sure let’s ignore it

more whispers.

anyways these journos really are brain dead or cant research things properly anymore. expansion doesn't need clubs to sign off, just needs to admins to consult clubs and a little cash thrown their way doesnt hurt.
How are the Bears targeting any marque signing, crap articles ... no one has officially even been approved in their role yet to even consider who the club will sign.
