You don't think this resentment already exists? It's always there and never going away but we're looking at adding 60 full-time first graders over the next 3 years.
We don't want to be raiding SL, that's the last thing we need. So where are they coming from? We'll just be promoting NSW Cup ect which will lower the standards.

I think it needs serious consideration.
Yeh Im in favour of the new clubs being allowed to sign players not currently contracted to an NRl club at a salary cap discount for the first 5 years. I just dont think giving a union player $2mill when NRL stars are on half that would sit well at all.

If you include kids coming through partner second tier clubs Storm would likely do very well. How many of their current squad have come through their partner club systems?

If the nrl was serious about juniors it would provide generous salary cap rewards for clubs to develop player not the current system

The longer that player has been in your systems the larger the percentage of their salary is outside the cap

The advantage of that is you would get tens of millions more spent on juniors coming form leagues club rather then arl revenues

But the roosters and storm would never allow ir
Or you'd see the arms race transfer to 15 and 16 year olds with clubs clambering to sign the best teenagers they could. Would end up like high school and college football in states where all sort is enticements are used to get kids to sign.

The Roosters have the Central Coast under their banner, one of the biggest junior nurseries in NSW.
That’s their problem if they don’t know how to utilise their area.

If you really wanted to solve it you'd take 15 clubs across NSW, 15 clubs across Qlnd, 8 clubs in WA, 20 clubs in NZ etc and seriously directly fund them to develop jnrs and run elite U16's and U19's comps independent of NRL clubs and have a draft. NRL clubs to operate U21's, reserve grade and first team.

But we know self interested clubs wont allow it.

Travel costs myth still getting a run in the Reds demise story …. They joined SL before they ever played a game
They had the extra team travel costs added after they joined and before kick off. They could see what impact that was going to have on their budget.
Starve a man and someone comes along offering a feast what do you expect him to do?

They weren’t starved though … they hadn’t played a frigging game at the time ..

Geyer is also not saying what you’re saying in that quote is he?

Yeh so more teams focused on their junior systems is a good thing even if they get them from elsewhere

During the expansion process, I’ve been against the Bears teaming up with the Perth bid , not because of any personal dislike for the old Bears team, but I know from experience how parochial Perth people are , and the disdain they have for anything associated with the East Coast …

Having said that and after closely watching the way this has played out , I’m confident in saying that if it wasn’t for the Bears association, we would not be sitting here today with a Perth team coming into the competition in 18 months . This negotiation saga from PVL will not go down as one of his career moments …he has over estimated what the franchise was worth , and the personal appeal to Cook…you could also question the arrogance shown towards the private bidder who went to effort and expense to try to get the nod…

Compared to the original asking price proposed to the State Govt , PVL has had to eat a turd sandwich in the end to get the team across the line, and my take is that it was his very public support of “bringing back the Bears for their hundreds of thousands of fans” that eventually convinced him to swallow his ego and sign off on the deal when it was headed off the rails

Anyway …onwards and upwards now …there needs to be a focus on making this team Perth/WA’s … the proposed team name change is a great start there… I would also have a nod in the logo as well… maybe an outline of the state of WA behind the Bear’s head …

I hope the old ( they must be all 50+ by now right) North Sydney Bears fans understand that although they get to watch a Bears named team and their old colours run around each week …. this is Perth’s team and they can’t be agitating for more games in Sydney/Central Coast or even a move back East when the inevitable tough times happen for any expansion team ….i have my doubt that some will remain silent on this , considering the divisions we still see from the likes of the Wests Magpies and Balmain dinosaurs…
Do you think in 2 years time, anyone is going to care about how negotiations took place? Love him or hate him, at the end of the day, PVL will manage to get at least 3 new clubs established, a massive increase in funding from Federal and State governments and achieve record revenues from broadcasters and other commercial interests during his tenure. What did the last few chairmen and CEOs achieve?

Tbh didn’t read that

Mg in that jersey looks pretty awesome

Wonder if they can get someone that good this time

it was a good looking jersey…unusual design with the different coloured shoulders…

I still remember when they were in the comp…particularly their first game that they won unexpectedly…

The reason they ultimately got done over was when News Ltd stopped paying the bills and preferred to fund the Storm instead ….

Well..I’ll remember it …for sure he has got things done when those before him couldnt , but I still think it’s ok to be critical about some of the processes … particularly in this sub forum where everything is analysed to the nth degree

Also - getting the teams in ( Perth and PNG) is the easy part …they both have long journeys ahead of them and it will probably be decades until we know the success or otherwise …having said that I still support the expansion he has undertaken

The biggest legacy for PVL will be this next TV deal …fingers crossed they can take a big leap and get the money that the game deserves

Like I said it didnt take an accounts genius to see what the addition of an extra teams travel costs had on their budget forecast.

Was never a big fan until I bought one and on it looks pretty cool. Very unique for a RL jersey. The replicas Rebel sell are very good quality I have to say. I wore it to Wembley last year and had numerous offers to buy it from UK fans. One guy in a Sheffield Eagles shirt was desperate for it lol

And like I said … that’s not what Geyer is saying …

Looks like the decision to jump ship never saved them from financial collapse anyway right ?
Hindsight's a wonderful gift! There was actually a lot of money behind the club at start up Im told. They were doing tours to Sth Africa in 1994, they were giving the 12 WARL clubs a significant grant each to strengthen their systems, they brought over a stack of players from the East that they housed and set up with jobs and placed across the WARL clubs and signed some pretty decent talent on and off the field.
Its a shame SL came along and we didnt get to see if they could have sustained it or not.

Sl was nuts though, weve heard the stories about the star players but even the kids were getting money thrown at them. One Reds U18 player from the time told me they gave him $80k just to sign up, it bought him a business and he's never looked back!

Even if they had stayed loyal the arl would’ve cut them

Arl couldn’t save heartland Sydney clubs, gold coast or crushers

No chance Perth would’ve made it
