Western Bears: NRL announcement set to come as early as next week, forcing Labor’s hand on cost

Roger Cook could be forced to come clean with West Australians on the true cost and value of a local NRL side as early as next week, with a deal due to be announced after sign off by club bosses this weekend.
The West Australian understands NRL club chief executives will meet on Friday in Brisbane to formally agree to resurrect the North Sydney Bears and base the side in Perth.
Following the meeting — which will be held amid Magic Round in Queensland this weekend, where all clubs are due to play — an announcement is set to be made as early as next week in partnership with the State Government.
Such an event would force the Premier to disclose WA’s final offer and the economic modelling which underpinned the agreement, as he has vowed to release the details upon the acceptance of the deal.
“We’ve done our own analysis and, if the NRL responds positively to our proposal, we’ll provide all that information to you all,” he said on Monday.
“The moment we have an agreed proposal, if one comes about, we’ll be completely transparent about not only the details of that proposal, but with evidence and modelling.

The North Sydney Bears are expected to move west. No
“We make agreements and we form partnerships with companies, with entities, with organisations, which boost the WA economy and make Western Australia a great place to live. And we’ll be held accountable for that in the normal way.”
An announcement would end a brutal, near-year-long negotiation from Mr Cook, an avid rugby league fan, with the Sydney-based League, after regular updates as part of the discussions were leaked to east coast media.
During the election campaign, Mr Cook was blindsided by claims the League was demanding as much as $320 million from taxpayers, including renovations to HBF Park, forcing him to rule out any money going east as part a deal.
Talks collapsed late last month after the Premier accused the League of treating the State like a “cash cow.” Instead, the Government’s first public offer included $35 million for growing the support in WA, through schools and the Clontarf Foundation, and a centre for excellence for league in Malaga.
Premier Roger Cook won’t reveal economic benefit of Bears bid until after deal is signed
As recently as last week, further details emerged the Australian Rugby League Commission had signed off a revised $50 million bid from WA — which is understood to be more funding for growing the sport.
The announcement comes ahead of the second State of Origin match set to be played at Optus Stadium in June and a regular season match between the Wayne Bennett-coached Dolphins and the Newcastle Knights.
Asked on Tuesday if plans were underway to hold an announcement next week, a State Government spokeswoman said: “If any agreement is reached, the State Government will be transparent about the details, as has been repeatedly stated,” she said.
“If any events are planned, you will of course be invited.”
The NRL was contacted for comment.
WA Government says no NRL deal yet but North Sydney Bears legend Billy Moore says it’s going ahead
Wow. The West Australian could rebrand itself as the anti league.
The city looks to have been granted a team in the biggest Rugby competition in the world and all they want to talk about is the negative. Even the photo they chose.. the defending team in between tackles, in the wet with empty seats in the background...
They would have to had scrolled through hundreds to find what is basically a throw away photo.
Incredible.

Easy decision for young top tier players that may be more financially motivated PLUS the Papua New Guinea side will have PNG heritage players that will be motivated to play for/be staff for PNG and represent PNG, Xavier Coates is a high profile example of this.
I'm of the opinion it will be the opposite.

Has Xavier, whose Dad is Australian and who has lived in Australia since he was an infant ever expressed any desire to go and live in Port Moresby?

And any PNG player who is half decent will leave as soon as they are offered an opportunity elsewhere.

If you think PNG will be a more desirable location than Perth than I think you are wrong.

Unless you didn't know this by now most commercial newspapers are extremely pro-LNP and they see this as a "wedge" issue they can bash Labor on before the Fed Election.

I’m sure next week after the election it will be all sunshine and rainbows from The West right in their coverage of the Perth Bears ?

There is also the Fairfax media which is entrenched on the other side of the political fence in the East Coast capital cities to act as the lefty cheerleaders ..is there an equivalent in Perth to perhaps provide a bit of balance and give them some positive coverage?

the NRL should now be committed to the Bears in Perth regardless of the WA government contribution - no more of the previous shenanigans. No use throwing the Perth Bears under the bus.
What the NRL should do if the funding isn't sufficient is exclude Perth from consideration for state of origin games, test matches, magic rounds or any other big games unless they bow down and take the knee like the bitches they are.

No, they will continue to bash the Labor Govt for the rest of their existence. The reality is though that Labor know they can announce it post-Election with no impact at all.

State Labor just wants to ensure its not blamed for any swing against Fed Labor.

Fairfax has been getting a lot more "right" after the Nine takeover.

The reality is that eventhough we post these sorts of articles, there readers are diminishing everyday.

that sounds right but I also would not be surprised if the AFL had a good bit of control of the WA newspaper similar to the way they seem to of the ABC.

I regularly read the SMH these days … I would hate to be reading it when it was even more “left” then it is now ..

I’m sure Cook or Labor won’t care too much about the political impact next week when the team is announced … I can’t see $75m spent over 5 years turning into too much of a political scandal …no matter how much the other side tries to make it one

I was reading here that The West is the only local Perth daily in town , so I suspect it still has a reasonable reach over there …if that is indeed the case then there is going to be a negative impact on a start up team for potential new fans over there if they are always going to be shitcanning the team and portraying them in the most unflattering way possible, just because their political opponent is a fan of the game …

Where you getting that figure from ?
Juts rechecked and its 340,000 (though that's a Roy Morgan figure and I dont put much faith in their stats lol). Still a signifcant minority.

On an average weekday, The West Australian is now read by 340,000 people, 441,000 read The West Australian, Saturday edition and 362,000 read The Sunday Times. The West Australian has the highest state market reach among the nation’s metro weekday and Saturday newspapers.

when 85%+ of Perths population are not reading it, no I'm not worried at all lol

Ok buddy …this is your style just to dismiss anything that doesn’t comply with your preferred position on something

According to these stats …their internet reach is comparable to the Age and the Herald Sun

so 81% arent reading it on the internet either. As I said it doesnt have the reach anymore to be a concern.

Be interesting to know how they got a potential internet reach of 4.1mill when there are only 3million people in WA and 22% of them are under 17 and not reading online newspapers lol.
