Develop your own players, players that have grown up in there own countries because this is the only way in which the public of that nation will connect with those players and league as a sport.

Yep - he's not an NRL player though :)

Hopefully the coaches will see sense and only select maybe one or two of these players to play for their teams.

They won't as most will be Aussie coaches who only care about instant results and their own self importance. Why bother if teams are loaded with Aussies?

Have none of you ever heard of the Ireland soccer team that qualified for most of the major tournaments in the late eighties and early nineties? They were mostly made up of Englismen and the odd Jock but that never bothered the Irish public. As far as they were concerned they were watching eleven men playing in green shirts and representing Ireland and that was all that mattered.

The difference being that soccer is strong in Irland and a long history. That puts it in a different position to league there. League needs to create heros to the young folk there and also for the wider community.

Why does everybody ridicule the selection of these playes but consider Iestyn Harris, Keiron Cunningham and Lee Briers to be true blue Welshman? IMO, it is quite simple, if these players are going to commit to the Welsh team AND play in all games that Wales select them for, then the public will always accept them as representing their own country.

Provided these players stick with their country, there is no problem with selecting them and it can only be a good thing for the developing countries. Luke Ricketson, when he was selected for Ireland, could have been great for Ireland if he had played for Ireland regularly since then, instead it became a farce, because he went on to play for Australia. If a team commits to any lesser nation, it should be exactly that, a committment. Anything less is unacceptable. Of course that would be easier if regular internationals were played, but hopefully that situation will be fixed from here on in.

Thats just what we need, a repeat of the 2000 world cup when we havd players playing for countries that they had never been to and held no links to until they pulled on a jersey for that country....and the public of those countries took to those teams like Ireland with huge crowds of about 500 people turning up. It gave union a chance to laugh there collective c**ks of on two fronts. World cup matches played infront of crowds that had time to be introduced to each other while the national anthem was being played and a chance to laugh because teams like Irland spoke with an aussie accent and drank XXXX after the match.

The next time we decide to play these international matches with aussie players why not go the whole way and give the players big red afro wigs to wear and big red noses to put on....after all thats exactly the responce your looking for right? international league being a joke?

Does that 500 people include the millions (more than has ever watched any state of origin game) who watched the England vs Ireland game in Great Britain and Europe?

Were the union crowd laughing their collective c**ks off when the Rugby league world cup (including some "minnow" Games) outrated the rugby union tests at the same time? I remember them being in shock at the time, but that is just me.

The next time we decide to play these international matches with aussie players why not go the whole way and give the players big red afro wigs to wear and big red noses to put on....after all thats exactly the responce your looking for right? international league being a joke?

Competition is the only thing that can and will give the rugby league world cup credibility. Union will try to laugh no matter what league does, this should be no exception. People have such short memories. It isnt that long ago that the idea of people who currently live in NSW playing against NSW made RL a laughing stock, yet it is now the biggest sporting event in Australia. Do you think it still would be if the closeness of the competition wasnt there? The RL world cup, imo, if promoted properly will be an amazing success if the games are close enough to be interesting. All this other business such as selection criteria or anything else means zero to the vast majority of casual fans who are the difference between success and failure of this event, provided that a decent RLIF marketing campain exists to counter the attempted bad press. Admittedly, the current RLIF/ARL does appear to lack a little ability in this area.
