Wally wants QLD and NSW in world cup

Rugby league Immortal Wally Lewis has pushed for Queensland and NSW - not Australia - to contest the World Cup in order to make the tournament competitive.
But the former Kangaroos skipper reckons international teams would still find it hard to match the Maroons and Blues.
Great Britain have threatened world No.1 Australia in the past but they won't be contesting the upcoming World Cup after splitting into England, Scotland and Ireland for the tournament Down Under.
Lewis said that decision had "weakened" the tournament which starts with a PNG-England clash at Townsville on October 25.
"It's very difficult but if other international teams have been broken up into other bodies and the strength has been weakened it makes it very difficult for those teams to beat Australia which is at their best," Lewis said in Brisbane.
"If they are divided up it makes it a little bit tough for them.
"Really Australia is the only team that doesn't suffer."
Lewis believed the introduction of Queensland and NSW would make the tournament "a hell of a lot more even".
Lewis still doubted whether the Maroons and Blues would be threatened at a World Cup.
"Particularly when you look at the standard that's set in interstate football," the veteran of 33 Tests said.
"State of Origin level has probably been raised to a bar that you have to question even whether the international football is going to get there.
"(Then) ... you are combining both those teams and putting them in the one Australian team."
But Lewis admitted that playing for his country was his greatest honour and proudest moment of his glittering career that also included 31 Origins for his beloved Queensland.
Australia are runaway tournament favourites at $1.18 with bookmakers ahead of New Zealand ($6.50) and England ($7).
Lewis was also shaking his head over the eligibility controversy that has marred the build-up to the tournament.
Tonga are threatening to take the international federation to court after it ruled Fuifui Moimoi and Taniela Tuiaki were ineligible.
And they are also reeling from the sudden withdrawal of squad member Anthony Tupou after he received a last minute call-up from Australia.
Lewis felt for Tonga which loomed as a major threat to Australia.
"If anything else he could have created a huge amount of confidence in their team if he played (for Tonga)," he said.
"It's very difficult to expect they are going to have a great deal of strength."
In other Cup news, Manly centre Steve Matai was cleared to join the New Zealand squad after seeing a medical specialist in Sydney.
Matai played through Manly's NRL championship title run with a shoulder injury.
But Matai was told his shoulder would not require immediate surgery.
And it seems the guessing game over Broncos centre Justin Hodges' availability will end on Tuesday.
ARL doctor Hugh Hazard said Hodges would visit a surgeon and discuss scan results on his injured shoulder.

I think the idea has merrit, i am more likely to support Queensland than the Kangaroos. The man is still the King.

ok..so it wouldn't be a world cup...but what if it was a world series, involving France, 2 x Composite English sides a North and South island side from NZ, NSW, QLD and a south pacific side, consisting of Fijians, Samoans and Tongans??

I can handle having an annual event like that, just quietly.

Ridiculous. We might as well divide the other countries up into little states as well Wally amd weaken them even more.

A NSW vs QLD WC final. :sarcasm:

How is England any weaker after the GB split?

In my books, England are favourites.

In the last two major tournaments, Australia have been embarrassed in the final, and scraped out of the other in Golden Point... both these against New Zealand no less.

worst idea ive ever heard. its the world cup, australia does not deserve two teams in it. we are not the be all and end all of rugby league on earth.

i wouldnt be against a tournament featuring a few provincial teams every 5 or so years, but not in place of a world cup.

silly idea however he is correct about how one sided this competition will be. Any move such as a qld, nsw, or aussie A team would hurt what little credibility the RL world cup has left.

What kind of rock have you been living under?

2005 TriNations Final
NZ def Aus 24-0

2006 TriNations Final
Aus def NZ 16-12 after the best game of RL ever played (2 halves of GP)

England have come across in leaps and bounds, France have a professional team for the first time. Tonga have plenty of NRL talent.

This will be far from a one-sided affair. I'm putting $20 on England to win it at $7, shall be interesting if I have to cheer for them whilst wearing my Roos jumper

Maybe if Australia had split into QLD and NSW they wouldn't have been so humiliated three short years ago by NZ?

Shut the hell up you idiot, King. Roughyedspud, harsh but gold!

While i prefer Australia, he is right, even though it isnt what most on this forum want to here.

You need to look at what splitting the sides into Qld and NSW would have done to the tournament. Presumably, Samoa would drop out of the tournament, with PNG to take their place and Qld and NSW to play in the super group. Qld/NSW in Sydney guarantees a 60,000+ crowd (probably more). The other two Qld games presumably played at Lang park get almost guaranteed 50,000 crowds (X2). YOu would expect New South Wales to get good crowds against England and New Zealand also (a kiwis vs NSW in Auckland/Wellington would have almost certainly sold out. The downer though may be that the Melbourne game would not get a crowd, although that is not guaranteed.

AS far as tv goes, it means that there will be at least one Qld/NSW game that gets state of origin size ratings and possibly 2. Even if there is only one, the mere fact that Qld or NSW (or both) has been beaten somewhere will make the final match twice as big as it could have been. Like it or not, this would ahve increased the money made from the world cup and introduced many new fans to the international game. It has been suggested many times before (most famously, by Arthur Beetson some time before the origin concept was born). It isnt anywhere near as bad an idea as many people think.

So why not make SOO a best of five series every year. The QRL and the NSWRL can split 60% of the revenue generated and the other 40% can go to aid international RL development? :sarcasm:
