Wally, Wayne and the Broncos...

Curious as to why the King was sacked by Wayne Bennett in 1990 from the Broncos? As far as I am aware, neither of them have ever spoken about it publicly, I've heard that Wally was a lazy trainer or that he was getting too injury prone but I'm not very clear at all on what went down. Be interested to hear what went down from somebody who'd know better than me?

A pivotal decision in the history of the club.

Wally truly was like royalty to the Queensland public at the time and the sacking turned Wayne Bennett into the most unpopular bloke in Brisbane until of course he achieved success.

Essentially, the way Bennett describes it in his second biography 'The Man In The Mirror' there was a variety of reasons. Firstly, and most important was the gap between him and the younger players. Wally cut an imposing figure at training and since he wasn't the best trainer a lot of his bad habits would rub off on the younger players. This is why Wayne recruited a lot of players from Canberra, particularly Peter Jackson because he knew he'd be a great influence on the club off the field. Which he was, particularly on Gene Miles, which is why Geno was given the Broncos captaincy in 1990.

From there, Wally just had too many issues with injuries & the Broncos couldn't afford his salary on the current cap. With the emergence of Kevin Walters, who was a revelation in 1990, the club trusted in it's younger generation to take the club forward.

Which they well and truly did.

This wasn't the first time Bennett opted to play a relative unknown over a legend. Kerrod Walters made his debut starting over Conescu, he would then go onto make his Origin and Test debut that same year.

It was all to do with juniors and little to do with personality issues.

Seagulls got a huge sponsorship deal through their leagues club in 1990-91 and they forked out big to get Wally and Wally said yes.

Wally was sacked because he found it hard when he had to be up for more than 3 games a year and didn't play Valley Diehards and soufs Logan 3 times a season

Bennett knew he couldn't keep both Wally Lewis and Willie Morganson at the club.

One had to go and it was Wally...

Wally was actually the Broncos' best player in 1988 and he won Dally M five-eighth of the year that year.

He broke his arm in the early stages of the 1988 world cup final at Eden Park and never realy recovered from that. I remember him breaking his arm again during a sat arvo game against St George at Kogarah in 1990.

The most unfortunate aspect of Lewis' demise from the Broncos is that people have to even ask this question. Lewis, although not known as the most obliging bloke at that time, deserved better considering what a truly inspirational rugby league player he was.

Wally sacked himself because he didn't want to play Bennett ball anymore, not even Bennett wants to play Bennett ball. Bennett ball sucks, Hasler ball is where its at, or maybe even Bellamy ball, Macquire ball is certainly on the up and up, Flano ball seems pretty good too.

All and all Bennett ball is ruining rugby league.
