I like Possm's forward pack for us next year. The only position I am unsure about is who will partner Frizzell in the second row? Leilua could be anything. Host looks like a very solid prospect and Simms certainly would not be out of place there either. I really think that with the forward pack, the halves and the exciting young backs that we have, that we will one of the top fancies to win the comp in 2019.

Solid quality pack...
10 forwards chosen in solid pack? 4 of which are on the bench !
So of the remaining 7 halves and outside backs ! If we have an injury during the game to any of our backs which occurs often, there will be no utility to replace them? Sorry but this does not compute on the field in the modern game.

Not necessarily if Mann is on the field say centre or winger any one of Frizell or Simms or even Host or Sele from the bench can cover for half a game much better 4 forwards on the bench in my humble opinion unfortunately MARYS got his own ideas

With a four forward bench and if an injury occurs to a back, Mann would shift from wing or centre to the injured players position and one of our backrowers probably Sims would play centre. Mary should only play players who are fit, this would be reduce the instance of injury to backline players.

A. I was commenting on the quality of the forwards available if Walmsley does indeed sign, not the makeup of the bench.

B. I'm not necessarily against the use of a utility on the bench, but if last year taught us anything, just carrying a utility getting splinters on the bench while our quality forwards get burnt out with a 3 man bench rotation, is a massive fail...

Imo a bench hooker, like robson, would be a more flexible option...

Agree with you .
If Mary is going to play the same style as last year.( the power games).then 4 forwards on the bench is what they have to play.
But if they are playing a different style then a utility is what they need.
Imo

If in 2018 Mary selects Sims in the prop rotation, then there is room for both Host and Leilua in the 17 and either Robson or a utility on the bench however, if Mary selects Lawrie, Allgood, Latimore or Kerr as the fourth prop in the 17 then Sims would take up the vacant secondrow position Host/Leilua/Robson/utility back will be contesting the two remaining bench positions.

In 2019 our forward pack should be:

Vaughan
McInnes
Graham
Frizell
Host
De Belin

Walmsley
Ah Mau
Sims
Leilua

I think that Sims spot in the bench is not required ... That bench will not be used effectively by Mary in an 8 interchange world.

I think that Leilua is the bench back rower, Walmsley/AhMau the props ... We need more of a 13/9 Util type than a 8/10/11/12 type.

Pretty useful pack though that ...

There's a big tip that Walmsley will seek a release for 2018.

FMD all this talk about if a back gets injured during a game what do we do?
People somehow think that the possibility of that occurring means that selecting a utility for the entire season is justifiable.
If we lose 1 game due to a back being injured during a game and we have only 4 forwards on the bench then so be it we lose 1 game.
We then regroup and replace the injured back with another back for the next game.
I guarantee you that we lose more games by having not enough forward cover on the bench than we ever do by not having a "utility" back warming the bench for 7 minutes a game.
Wake up people losing 1 game is not the issue losing lots of games due to having f**ked forwards that have blown their poofoo valves is what must be avoided.

I think the issue these days isn't injury, it's the HIA process where there will be multiple games where we lose a back for a portion. I'm not totally against a bench of forwards, but I always think back to a Tigers game a few years ago where Lovett ended up in the centres due to injury and got taken to the cleaners. With the HIA process it could be more than 1 game.

If we're to go with 4 forwards than some of our forwards should be at least spending some time training in defence at centre. Personally, I'd look to rotate a utility and a fourth forward throughout the year. Where we're up against big packs or there are some tired forwards go with the 4 forwards on the bench. Otherwise go with the utility but use them more than the last 7 minutes. Queensland's approach to how they use Morgan from the bench could work.
