Waltzing Matilda

Should Waltzing Matilda be allowed at the RU World Cup?

  • No, it's a national embarassment and anyway, all that sheep talk just gets the Kiwis going.

  • Yes, it's our national song and part of our heritage.

The IRB has refused to allow "Waltzing Matilda" to be sung before the Wallabies games in the World Cup, saying that it is not culturally significant enough. The NZ Haka, war dances of the Pacific nations and the more recently-adopted South African Zulu war dance will all be allowed.

Does the Sheep-Stealer Song deserve its place at the World Cup? Or should it be banned for ever from sporting arenas?

the first time the song sprung up it was awesome, now it's too staged.

Waltzing Matilda should be the Oz national anthem

I don't think it should be allowed.

If the wannabes wanted to do an aborigonal war dance before a game, fine, but waltzing matilda is nothing more than just a song.

No it shouldn't be.

My wife is australian and whilst she likes the song, it offends her to think people want it as the national anthem.

it is an awful song that has no relevance to modern society

i hate it

the rugby yawnion use it to try and make their game have some sort of fake cultural history
and to make it sound like a nice game

the song is like a country and western song even worse

id prefer

something like

i love a sunburnt country

at least it has some sort of relevance to modern australia

even though it not the greatest

waltzing matilda is terrible

any thought of it replacing advance australia fair as our national anthem is night on ridiculous

the irb is right for banning it

Id rather see the aussies do the aboriginal haka thing they used to do

rather than sing that song

I don,t mind it as long as it,s not sung by that dribbling idiot John Williamson.I cringe every time he sings it.
Judging by the media coverage,he must regard it as his own personal song and he reckons he is going to lead a choir in the stands.
Shit ! who invited him?

it has no cultural significance other than highlighting aussies "perverse fascination  with sheep and the lewd acts they commit with them..

they did it at the olympics (corrogated iron ewes-ouch ! ) so i guess it,ll be all go at the union world cup

there will be dags flying in all directions

we could teach ewe lot a new haka

"come here you bastard-baaaa baaa"
"come here you mongrel-baaa baaa

I wouldnt mind seeing the Aus rugby team doing an aboriginal haka that would be very amusing. Do you think they could put some paints on as well , that would show the Aus team up for the Wannabies they are. The way I see it which is the better of the two evils  the song or the haka both would be major cringe factors.

It's a care factor issue - a non-issue. Just the yawnion trying to drum up publicity for their code which is currently fast asleep.

Why can't the crowd just sing it during the game? Like the English do with swing low sweet chariot...
