There's a letter in this week's issue of League Express here in the UK from a guy that reckons there's going to be a nine a side event in LA and a WAMNRL select team will play an East coast side in Jersey. This is the first I have heard of any of this. I've checked out the WAMNRL site and there's no mention of any nine a side tournament or a game against an East coast team. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Yes. The WAMNRL is a myth. How many times have we heard this is going to happen and that is going to happen only for it to go quiet again. Over the years we've heard big plans for American RL and generally the result has been somewhat below what was mooted, yet small steps have seen it grow in the east. But in the west there seems to have been no steps forward and nothing much beyond a bit of talk. I wouldn't get too carried away with anything just yet.

I contacted the WAMNRL i while ago to see what was happening, got a reply about 6 months later that basically said nothing (not that they're doing nothing, they just may as well have not replied).

Anyway I wish them luck and hope they can getn a league up and running one day.

OK just out of the blue but I hear a Boston team has been started up again in feb's RLW, anyone know if they will play AMNRL this year.

I think that if a Western Comp actually gets up it will eclipse the eastern one within a couple years. The base of Aussies, Kiwis, Islanders and Rugby Union is huge in California.

I think they need to take an international game to LA. Souths with Crowe would draw a good crowd and they could use that to launch off.

A Boston team has been mentioned for 2009 but I've not heard anything concrete yet.

Boston is in. They had reps at the AMNRL meeting and seem to be much better orgainized with sponsors, plans, etc this year. Looks like 11 teams in the AMNRL in 2009.

It will have to be as well organised and as financially sound as the Axemen looking at the map. It's a long drive from Boston to where the bulk of the teams are based. Not as far as Florida but still a long hike.

From what i read in RLW there are commited people at the helm and they already have some sponsors and players on board. Like Spinner said they should be much more organised, the Axemen are proof of what an organised club can do in america. Pity clubs like NY and Philli can't do the same, would be nice to have a foothold in a few more big cities like we have in Jacksonville.

I only know what I see on the net but I got the impression that the Fight and Knights were run fairly well...

And bring on the new powerhouse of the AMNRL- the Bye! :)

The league format will mean each team doesn't play all of the others so there won't be any byes.

Well that steals my thunder.

If there's only 11 teams why wouldn't they all just play each other once? 10 games isn't too much more than 8. Although only having 8 may allow the comp to see the poorer teams playing closer to home and avoid the long trips to Jacksonville or Boston...

Hang on, that's only 4 home games a season. How are you supposed to build support for your team with only 4 games a year?

With the current economy and the distances involved for teams travelling 8 games is probably wise. If we entered a team from here in Chicago it would certainly be more cost effective and it's probably the case for the likes of Jacksonville and Boston.

I remember reading a few years back an article about a Chicago rugby team starting to play league to venture into the AMNRL but thats as far as it went, memory serves correctly, a rugby team called the wolfhounds wanted to join, not sure if this was Boston or Chicago

The Wolfhounds were based in Boston. We still plan on entering the world of league here in Chicago but are a few years off any potential AMNRL place. It is going to have to be locally based and it will come about, it just takes time.
