The American National Rugby League has celebrated ten years in the US with its annual War at the Shore beach league festival. Round Six of the AMNRL season was played Saturday at the seaside location of Sea Isle City, New Jersey, and at the end of the day the Connecticut Wildcats had moved into sole possession of first place in the competition. In the opening game of the day, Philadelphia Fight locked horns with the New Jersey Sharks in a local derby. The Sharks won the encounter convincingly 36-6 and improved their overall position on the points ladder.
The next match pitted the Washington DC Slayers against the New York Knights and it was the Knights who emerged victorious by the slenderest of margins 36-34. Game three saw a much anticipated top-of-the-table clash between the only unbeaten teams in the league as the Connecticut Wildcats and Aston DSC Bulls went at it head-to-head. The Wildcats, who are the reigning champions, won the showdown 48-22 to lock up top spot.
And in the final game on the fixture card, the Jacksonville Axemen faced off against the New Haven Warriors in what was a must-win game for both sides. On this occasion though it was the Warriors who came through for the win, posting a 22-10 decision. The result improved New Havens record to .500, while the Axemen now have it all to do if theyre to make it to the playoffs. The Northern Raiders and Fairfax Eagles had a bye.
It was probably our biggest event ever, AMNRL president David Niu told ARN. There was some good football, a great crowd, and wonderful weather.
The inaugural War at the Shore was held in 1998 and featured the Philadelphia Bulldogs (who later became the Philadelphia Fight) taking on the Glen Mills Bulls at the end of a rugby union tournament. The plan was to capitalize on the existing fans at the rugby tourney and introduce them to the thirteen-man code. The combination of climate, location and the atmosphere created by summer beachgoers have combined to make the War at the Shore a feature event on the AMNRLs calendar.
