But what did they think the cap was going to be and why did they think it would be so high when no one else did? Seems like they rolled the dice and crapped out.

According to Kent, Canberra did also, but didn't end up in the shit like Canterbury. I cannot recall why. Probably didn't have the backended deals.

I reckon the doom and gloom and outrage is overblown, but it's pretty clear Hasler was so obsessed with the training side of things that he didn't care about salaries, and the people above him at both clubs were enamored with his perceived ability or something and also forgot to make sense of the cap.

I put the Foran deal down to him being one of Des's boys, but the club still had to sign off on it. Even if Foran was to play most games near his potential, he wasn't worth what they paid and he was on $380k the year prior at NZ, so half of what he was signed for would've probably got him to the club.

Hasler must have some persuasive ways as the salary cap at both clubs he coached are f#@ed. He somehow convinced them it would work out....

After this debacle, backended deals and ratchet clauses must be outlawed.

It is why we couldn't offer big money for Boyd or Paulo. We are probably in a worse position than the club is letting on. We will lose Austin not that I am crying any tears over that but we don't have a lot lined up to replace any one.

Des probably planned to do well with those players and the back ended deals and shop them around for the final years of their contract. Problem is no one is paying the ridiculous money players like Eastwood are on. So they dump him to reserves to make him want to leave but Eastwood is more than happy to be paid 800k or so and play reserve grade.

How much say in salaries do coaches really have? Surely that’s the ceo and gm’s Job to negotiate deals and manage the cap?

Well Ethan Lowe and Justin o’neill just took up the option in their favour for 2019 to stay in NQ. Don’t think these lads are on eastwoods 800k but f**k me, i can’t see eitherr of them getting out of qcup this year or next year. That is a lot of coin wasted.......

Well you can expect Kent to lay the boot into the NRL if/when the Raiders turn to shit in the coming years.
Can’t have his good mate Stick taking responsibility.

Hasler should definitely get another coaching gig. He's just too good at it. His issue at Dogs is that he's obviously a horrible recruiter and cap manager, roles that he ended up taking on at the Dogs (either through choice or to justify his enormous salary) and ultimately led to his/their demise.

His best year at the Dogs was 2012, a year where the playing group was decided for him and he created a unique and highly successful game plan revolving around skilful forwards and fullback - the merkin won a minor premiership and made a GF with Kris f**king Keating as his halfback!

Put him in a set up where he doesn't have to look after recruitment (like, say, Dragons or Raiders) and he'll likely get back to the top.

We're gonna sign a couple more poms:

May as well fill the whole squad with pale skinned poms. They're the only ones who are really willing to live in the cold.

As for Des, his record speaks for itself. He'll get another shot at a club where he's not too involved in negotiations, and it will be sooner rather than later. I wouldn't have minded if he got the Kiwis job tbh.

Coach shouldn't be blamed for poor decisions made by clubs, including the decision to hire them in the first place

I believe they will be relatively cheap. Bateman maybe less so because he is an england rep. I think its pretty obvious we have at the least a small salary cap issue at the minimum.

I feel like the obvious fix is to charge the cap the annual average of the contract.
