what do we put the ISP success down to? Ricky Henry?

Sure. He's probably a part of it. His results would suggest he's a good coach

Another factor would be the increased focus on the ISP over the under 20's. Hindsight has pretty much proven that it wasn't a great breeding ground for us in terms of developing players. Yes Ackland had them up in the finals year after year, but the pathway for promotion from there to first grade was too quick for a lot of guys, and imo we're still feeling the effects of it.

The Reserves (then the Vulcans) were in the Grand Final under Richie Blackmore in 2011, but were treated as a training run for the juniors around 2012 - 2014, and it's only because of the restructure that Matt Elliot implemented that it's now back where it should be as an extension of the first grade squad.

As someone else mentioned (in another thread?), it seems that the Reserves this year are playing to structures that Kearney probably has a say in. He has them playing the way he wants the top team to play. And as a consequence, when and if they are ready for the step up, they should be able to slot straight in to his style of play.

I put it down to a few things

1 - our forwards dominate the ruck most games making it easier for Lino to control the team.

2 - Henry has a massive part to do with it. As i mentioned in my report he gets the players cut from 1st grade then moulds them with his usuals to play an exciting brand of footy that i mentioned in point 1. Remember that Henry gets told what number of minutes the guys on the crisp of first grade need to play eg Vete Gubb etc. So he has to take that into account as well

3 - They have more motivation tahn every other team to make first grade as they have the worst preperation/travel. For example on Sunday they got there the day before with no captains run, played at 1pm, straight after the game into the sheds for a quick chat from the coach, some fruit and poweraid to get the body fluids going, a weigh in, quick release of their GPS data, I was lucky enough to go into the sheds after the game and seen it all (massive eye opener) straight on the bus (no shower or recovery) given a pre packed meal of chicken fish and veggies for the ride. Get to the hotel for swim and recovery, check out of hotel and straight to the airport for the flight home and arrive Auckland 1am monday morning. So if thats not motivation to make the glitz and glammer of first grade i dont know what is.

4 - There is a real family feel/vibe in the team, they rely and trust each other and they play in front of crowds of 50-100 people. Once there were only 23 that i counted, so its like the us against the world mentality

Good start by us

And just like that. Tof is over. Third try in 2 games?

Edit. Maybe it was the game before he crashed over for 2 tries. Takes 3 defenders over the line for his try though.
