Seems like a square peg in a round hole signing to me. Johnson is a quality talent and we've yet to really see the type of form he's capable of at rep at club land, but he doesn't quite fit the whole Valentine Holmes is about to leave.
One of the edge's Cronulla had over the competition was their ability to work the ball out of trouble. Presumably, Moylan is going to have to move back to 1 and if there was one deficiency in his game, it was his kick returns. Dugan could possibly fill that role, but the Sharks are skinny in the backline and they have a surplus of halves.
I suppose Cronulla had to sign somebody and Johnson is one of the more appealing risks in the game, I just can't help but feel it's a short term gain for what could be long term pain.
With that said, it's going to be interesting to see what Johnson can do behind a pack with Fifita, Woods, Graham, Gallen and Prior involved. It's time for him to prove himself as an elite player in the NRL and if he can't make the most of it with that pack, I think it will always be a mark against him. He'll be remembered as a handy representative player who's biggest highlight was tearing an understrength Australia apart in 2014. A far cry from the projection many had of him in 2011.
