Warriors set to make announcements today on the future of coach Ivan Cleary and a high profile player

Expect a couple of big announcements from the Warriors today concerning the coaching future of Ivan Cleary and the playing future of a high profile player who is set to part company with the club.

Meanwhile, there are no changes to the Warriors side to play the Brisbane Broncos in their final NRL appearance of the season.

Cleary is sticking with the same side that has won its last four matches, with hooker Nathan Fien on the bench after coming back last week from two weeks out with a back injury.

He says they are all aiming for a fifth win in a row and there is no point changing a winning formula, but he notes how challenging that will be, given they are playing Brisbane at home.

Cleary says he is having no problem motivating his side as they are pretty keen to go out on a winning note.

2003 was the last time the club won five matches in a row.

The game will be back rower Michael Luck's 100th NRL appearance, and he has not missed a game this season.

Fellow Queenslander Grant Rovelli is the only other player to have appeared in all 24 games this season.

After 23 rounds, the Warriors have the third best points for and against differential of 113.

I saw Ivan's name mentioned (along with several others) as a possible replacement for Ricky Stuart in one of the Aussie papers this morning.

Until now, I had shrugged it off as impossible. :(

I cant really stress enough how big a blow the loss of Sione is for our title chances next season.

AdvertisementWARRIORS international Sione Faumuina is set to part company with the club and may be headed to Manly.

Faumuina, who has had a major falling-out with coach Ivan Cleary, is understood to have been released by the Warriors after a series of off-field incidents.

The development comes just weeks after Warriors management talked him out of quitting the club. At the time he was heavily linked with the Sea Eagles as a back-row replacement for Ben Kennedy and it is thought he still hopes to join the Sydney club next season.

The 25-year-old utility met Warriors management yesterday to discuss his future and an announcement is expected today.

Another part of the cancer is gone. Betham, Toopi now Faumuina.

What do you think the announcement on Cleary is going to be?

Will the Warriors hit the open market for a replacement for Faumuina or stick with local talent?(prepare from another one of ozbash's "stick with local talent team" speach. Whos left on the market who could be a good signing?

We can only hope extension. If he's off to the Roosters the management is no better than previous eras.

Disagree, for all his talent he's a selfish, indisciplined sh*tbag who's the last exaple of the attitude problems that have plagued ther club in the last few years. Sure he's got great talent but he doesn't apply it and has done f**k-all for us this season.
Hopefully Cleary's staying... would be utterly gutted if he left and I'd lose an enourmous amount of faith in management whove hardly put a foot wrong so far (including getting rid of Sione if true).
I wonder, if Castleford get relegated and Sione goes, could we hold onto Awen for a couple more seasons?

It could be hard to find a replacement at this stage of the season...

Obviously the dream replacement would be Ali.

NZ Warriors sack Faumuina

August 30, 2006 - 8:19AM

Backrower Sione Faumuina has been sacked by the New Zealand Warriors for an alcohol-related incident when the NRL club defeated the Sydney Roosters in Auckland.

Chief executive Wayne Scurrah confirmed that the Warriors had ended the two-Test Kiwi's contract, which was to have run until the end of next season.

"It relates to alcohol-related behaviour at the Roosters game," he told NZPA.

"I'm not going into specific details but it was unacceptable. There was some incident with serious misconduct and we met with Sione and have terminated his contract."

Faumuina, 25, missed the Warriors' four-match winning streak, having broken his hand in the 36-6 loss to Penrith five weeks ago.

The injury ended his season and left him on 99 NRL appearances, of which 11 were for Canberra before he joined the Warriors at the start of 2002.

There have been previous reported incidents involving Faumuina and alcohol, and Scurrah said the Warriors were disappointed to have to make the decision to let him go.

"He's highly regarded by the club and has been here for a long time," he said.

"Certainly the last thing we wanted is his contract torn up."

Wakefield probably going down. It fits.

If Wakefield get relegated: sign Solomona
If Castleford get relegated: retain Guttenbeil

Either way I'd be happy...
