Watch Dogs - who, what, where and when?

Ubisofts little suprise that nobody saw coming certainly took E3 by storm and what was so well done with its reveal was the lack of context and further information to support the game.

All we know is its a new IP (rare to see this late into a console cycle that should be wrapping up) and its very mysterious.

The demo itself showed us who we would be playing and essentially how we would be playing. A comment on where I am so happy its in Chicago... one of my favorite cities and criminally underused in gaming (reminds me of The Fugitive)

Few notes from an interview on Spike TV - it will have a unique take on multiplayer which I assume is what we saw in the demo at the end, different players playing different characters, but the Ubisoft designer being interviewed said he didnt want to go into detail with the multiplayer but rather wanted to wait until they were ready to show it in detail.

And secondly it was announced that its still over a year away and they are going for PC, Ps3 and 360 BUT "are open to other platforms as the development progresses", so to me in other words this will be a next gen title and possibly a launch title with releases for the 360 and PS3 during the cross over period.

Whats everybody elses thoughts on Watch Dogs?

I really like the look of it, I love a good open world sandbox and this seems like it's going to put a very interesting spin on it with the way you interact with tempe enviroment. Being over a year a way sucks though, hopefully GTA V is released late this year or early next year to make the wait shorter.

I still hold out hope that GTA will be out October this year... Take2 NEED something to come out in the previously alloted slot for Bioshock Infinite, and GTA is a franchise that needs little marketing but historically Rockstar usually only undertake 6-4 month marketing periods anyway.

Its makes a lot of sense that they would release it October from both a historical stand point as well as smart business for both Rockstar and Take2 interactive.

But Watch Dogs, honestly rewatch that and then rewatch the Unreal 4 "Samaritan" demo again... that game will be next gen and will be more then just 1 year away. The way the clothing moves and the way that the rain and environment interact with eachother. Plus the dynamic open world they are creating where aparently the NPC's in that city all have backstories and items you can hack into to access side missions.

Not to mention they announced an app they will be releasing as a companion to the game which I think Microsoft will jump all over for the SmartGlass.

Wasn't the Samaritan demo running on Unreal 3?

Spot on bud , my bad... writing long paragraph like that at work is a mistake riddled hazard...

But that engine was what was essentially titled Unreal 3.5 a genuine tech demo to showcase what was upcoming for Unreal 4...

The demo was the best thing I saw at E3 - a show that I've been largely unimpressed with this year. The Last of Us, the Big Daddy reveal, God of War: Ascension, Halo 4, Assassins Creed 3 and the new Star Wars game are the only things I am really excited for.

Oh, I forget to mention Fall of Cybertron :D

If Watch Dogs is running on Unreal 3, or 3.5 it won't necessarily be next gen though.

Thats true but its not just neccesarily graphics i am basing my next gen prediction on but rather game mechanics, particularly if he wasnt exaggerating in the interview with IGN when talking about the NPC's and their behaviour in the world... Plus all the other systems working within a massive living open world while graphically looking like that.

Which granted is a big if because its not like developers havent exaggerated the whole "you can follow the NPC's home" idea before...

The amount of interactivity with the world they are describing doesn't necessarily mean it will be next gen either, you just have to look at something like Shenmue to see that, granted this looks to be possibly more in depth as far as random NPCs walking down the street go, but I'm confident the PS3 and 360 can handle it.

That demo was nearly as good as marital activities combined with x-box controller tapping.

This game will be running a Havok physics game engine, meaning we could see a game very similar to Sleeping Dogs/True Crime Hong Kong. Interesting...

I agree. It was too... easy? Driving at full speed yet you could be able to do all sorts of crazy shit. GTA 4 remains the best realistic driving too date IMO.

Seeing as no one seems to have brought this up, I'll update you. Watch Dogs was meant to be released this quarter... but in sticking to being the complete f**kwits that they are, Ubisoft have delayed this release until Q2 next year for no valid reason.

Might by-pass the game now, as a 7-8 month delay will result in huge expectations that IMO will no doubt fail to deliver.

Ubi have been releasing killer games for the past few years.

Rayman, Rocksmith, Far Cry 3 and Splinter Cell for example.

I imagine it was delayed as it would be competing with ACIV for buyers rather than the CODs and BFIVs of the gaming world.

Also it has to compete with GTAV in the modern open world game genre. If it isn't top notch it will be obliterated in reviews and rightfully so.

I understand what you're saying, and that could very well be why they're doing it, however, by delaying a game that many people have been waiting for, for so long, means that their expectations of it will (naturally) be higher, and when that fails to deliver, they'll get crappy reviews there too. I may as well not bother wasting my time and money on it.

Ubi released SC Blacklist (as you mentioned) on schedule, no delay or anything, and it was competing with Saints Row IV AND GTA 5 - and I don't regret buying it in the least... one of (if not) the best SC game I've ever played.

You aren't going to buy it because it's been delayed? You remind me of that fat spoilt kid on youtube who raged hard when GTA V was delayed.

Had this pre-ordered for lauch of PS4

Shame it has been delayed but I'm not going to cancel the pre-order just because it's been pushed back

No... I (might not) buy it because now that it's been pushed back, but rather because I'm expecting more than originally thought.

Delaying games can often put people off the company altogether. It's a tricky business, but things like this do tend to piss people off.

People would be more pissed if it was released next month and was a buggy, unfinished mess.

And why are you now expecting more? I don't understand that reasoning. My expectations of GTA V weren't changed when it was delayed, my expectations of BioShock Infinite weren't changed when it was delayed either.
