Wayne Bennett and future coach talk

2nd worst behind Alan McMahon but he's gaining on him fast. I don't know how people can say this isn't Bennett's team, every bloke there now was signed or re-signed under Bennett's watch
Bang on the money.

I'd go as far as saying Bennett could well end up as our worst coach ever in terms of winning percentages. I can't see us winning too many more games this year so if he does hang around next season we'll probably have to finish top four...

From experience, don't let him endorse an understudy.
The price will be wrong.
Hang in there, you blokes have a good side and it will turn, you are not getting towelled up.
The year has been a train wreck off the field, many other teams would not be turning up like you lot always do.

I do agree with you that effort isn't really the teams major problem apart from a few exceptions, ie Boyd, Snowden and Mullen over the last few weeks. I feel that the biggest issue is that we lack class and size. I do think we would be doing far better if we had Packer and even tets in the team. We are seriously lacking punch up the middle.

Tets was garbage. We lack nothing with him not there.

I know we lack some backrowers of speed and power but my god we miss Danny Buderus.

I think we all just want this season to be over because it is going nowhere and start again next year. Whether that is with Wayne 'One Out' Bennett or some other b grade hack that we could pay a low salary to.

We had a wrestling coach for 6 months last year, but from what he told me Bennett hardly spoke to him in 6 months and basically just shunned him.

This is my concern with Bennett, is he too set in his ways now and more worried about his legacy.

Young coaches will leave no stone unturned to succeed as they have career aspirations driving them. What is driving Bennett?

We know he doesn't like the wrestle, so we don't have a wrestling coach and are paying the price.

There is no doubt that the rule changes have changed the play, but Bennett just doesn't seem to have changed tack at all.

Can an old dog learn new tricks?

Bennett is more worried about what's good for the game then what's good for his football team

That's the legacy aspect, he does want to be able to criticise wrestling and then not be challenged on having a wrestling coach.

The issue is that the team is suffering for his crusade.

Is he paid to be a NRL morals crusader or our coach. He can't afford to be on his high horse about anything frankly.

For people looking back at a later date here's the article that was linked in the first post:

We want Wayne Bennett to be a big part of Newcastle Knights’ future, says Dave Smith
22 HOURS AGO
JUNE 15, 2014 12:00AM

NEWCASTLE coach Wayne Bennett will be encouraged to remain at the Knights long term, with NRL boss Dave Smith declaring he is a “terrific leader of men” and very important to the future of the club.
Smith has ended months of speculation surrounding the Knights’ ownership by confirming the NRL will take control until a new ownership model is put in place.
Current CEO Matt Gidley and chairman Paul Harragon will remain in their roles supported by management from the NRL until a new board is chosen over the next few months.
But Smith said the long-term reality is the NRL is not in the business of owning clubs and once a stabilising period is completed, future ownership options will be considered.

The NRL has already held preliminary talks with Wests Group in Newcastle with a view to them becoming a major financial backer.
Smith’s announcement brings to an end Nathan Tinkler’s tumultuous three-year reign as Knights owner after months of negotiations involving Tinkler’s Hunter Sports Group and the Knights Members’ Club.
The new entity, to be known as Knights Rugby League Pty Ltd, will kick off debt-free with $5.1 million in the bank, the part proceeds of Tinkler’s $10.52 million bank guarantee. The remainder of the guarantee will go towards paying existing debt.
A seven member board will be established with four independent directors, two stakeholder directors and a community director initially appointed by the Members’ Club.
Smith claimed Newcastle was in as strong a financial position as any club in the NRL because of the new deal and stressed the head body’s involvement will have no impact on the club’s identity.

‘‘The Knights will continue to be Newcastle through and through,” Smith said at a press conference at Hunter Stadium. “The team will look the same, they will continue to be based in Newcastle and they will represent this region proudly like they have for the last 26 years.
“The difference is that, financially, they will be one of the top tier clubs in the competition.
“We have secured the long term future for Newcastle Knights. This is about Newcastle. This is about the community of Newcastle and we are going to make that community connection stronger, not weaker.”
Smith was reluctant to spell out whether the new entity would completely honour all existing staff contracts except to say that it was “business as usual”, presumably until at least the end of the season.
But quizzed later on Bennett’s contract, which is in place until the end of 2015, he told The Sunday Telegraph he wants to see the coach stay.

“Wayne’s a very important part of the club and hopefully this (agreement) clears away the uncertainty for him and he can now make an informed decision,” he said. “I know he loves the place and he loves the club and we want to keep people of his calibre involved here. Personally, I hope he is part of the club long term.”
Smith said the Knights ownership structure could well be the blueprint for other NRL clubs in the future.
“It’s similar to some of the other structures that we are thinking about across other clubs in the NRL,” Smith said.
“In terms of governance, having a skills-based board that has a proper level of independence, the right leadership with clubs that are well capitalised, I think that is a really good model for other clubs to be thinking about as well.”

I think he will stay for next year assuming the money is close, I don't think he wants to be seen as money hungry, but I just don't see him signing on beyond that, I suspect he sees this club as too problematic and the recruitment piece too difficult.

He'll end up back at the Broncos on more money with less problems, he'll be the coaching director and moral guardian of the NRL.

You cannot blame him for being a little worn down by proceedings. Maybe he was hoping for a more open resolution.

There's no doubt Bennett has been screwed over. Yes I know he can't complain because he earns a lot of money blah blah blah, but that doesn't sweeten everything. Tinkler didn't just promise us the world, he promised it to Wayne as well to get him here and within a few short years the owner that Wayne signed here because of has left the club in the most dramatic fashion possible.

After all that (and his history in the game) we owe him the chance to see if he can get the team rolling when things are running smoothly. Whether he chooses to stay or not is besides the point, I'm just happy the NRL have come out and said they want to retain him at the club. He very well might not be able to get us going well again, but he deserves the chance.

The biggest issue is that if Bennett won't commit until he knows what the management make up will be, we're going to find it very hard to sign anyone. I just hope even if it isn't public the club has a better idea of who will be coaching so we can tell potential recruits that. I'm sure either way it will be Bennett or Stone so that's a start. Nobody any better than them would consider coming here at the moment in the midst of the current shit (and tbh it's debatable if anyone could have done any better in the midst of this season from hell).

Regardless of who is coach, I just hope it can be sorted quickly so we can start building for next year.

Wish we could piss Midley off and bring in Gould to manage the club. He's taken the Panthers to a new level.
