WC Train on-squad

What about if Smith got called into replace SBW?

Shit just got tricky !!

I will give the NZRL some credit over the handling of this, at least they made a call and fronted up honestly with it, was expecting an injury to suddenly appear in the camp

1 other piece to this puzzle, apparently WC rules state that players must be attached to a Rugby League Club, that box hasn't been ticked off yet

Maybe I'm giving the SBW camp too much credit, but I think this is all by design. He has a history of making sensational decisions that polarize people. When you do that, the people who hate you take as much interest in your "brand" as the people you love you. I personally think that when it comes to sport, polarizing figures are a precious commodity. A large number of the greatest sportsmen in history have divided people's opinions. Still, though, I feel sorry for Harris.

I feel for Harris, and I feel for Kearney- who no matter which way he went he was/is going to get flack when it's not his doing.
If I was in Kearney's shoes, I have to be honest, the guy is a talent for your team and odds are I'd do the same thing...but the whole thing just makes me sad-Why muck people around so much?
Aside from the ridiculous celebrity boxing joke which still is just that, SBW was winning me over after this year. He'd made a great comeback to League, and had just got on with it. I was starting to respect the guy again. That's been tarnished- great on the field, but at best he's shown to be flakey, disrespectful, and only interested in the self. I should not have expected anything different. Is this Khoddars doing? Is there some sort of conspiracy behind this? I dunno...while a fab athelete-no denying it-he just seems a bit thick quite frankly and never exactly sure what he wants.

But yes, I will still support the Kiwis, I will not let the self centred Winston Peters of sport change that.

Is it in ANY way possible that SBW really was just so focussed on the NRL that he never bothered to seriously consider the RLWC? That he wasn't given enough time to think about it after the GF by an NZRL who took something of a hard-line stance, and that he really did only realise what he was missing late yesterday?

Would it be the height of naivety to even consider that this scenario was possible? Or is it plausible given that SBW is both extremely focussed and a little bit dopey?

One thing that makes me wonder is the comments by both Kearney and Barnett throughout the year. Barnett in particular wrote a column for the NZHerald a few weeks ago which I thought was completely ridiculous. He basically said he didn't think SBW would be available, didn't think he was one of our key players anyway (!) and wasn't going out of his way to encourage SBW to play.

I just get the feeling that maybe SBW was expecting a bit more communication (and sucking up) from NZRL and genuinely got a shock when they just didn't pick him. Still a dick move but maybe not as carefully planned and plotted as we might think?

Feel for Tohu Harris, he'll most likely develop into a required player and one day the kiwis might need him, lets hope he doesn't turn his back on them like has been done to him.

Disappointed how this played out. SBW is a bit of a doofus, his manager a disaster. Feel sorry for Harris.

But....completely over it!

SBW playing in the WC, kiwi chances of winning it just increased 10%, stoked!!

Good news.

I can understand him being tempted to take a break from it all. Can't say I've been following him too closely but he wouldn't have had a true off season in a while, right?

Nope. He's not that bright...but even he should be able to mull things over in the space of a year:lol:

It sounds like he took it like a champ. If his play matches his attitude, he has a big future

Shows the class of the bloke to still head over even though he can't play ;)

Wasn't any chance of playing after what I have been reading the last month or so, taking a lot of needles pre game to be able to play

LMFAO @ Technical Advisor. He's going to advise how to technically take your opposite number's head off like he done to Gasnier.

I do think Kearney and the Kiwi selectors haven't handled the Matai situation well over the years though.

You reckon? I've been over this with BH and from memory I could only find maybe a couple of games where he wasn't selected when he was supposedly fit to play since about 09-10

Kearney's 1st game as coach I think it was, it was stated on 40/20 by 1 of the selectors that Matai and Sa'u were "too small" for international footy so we went with SKD and Mannering. Kearney was never gonna pick him after that. But as you say we have been over that lol

Yeah you are both right.

He is a liability though ....penalties and injuries.

Him pulling out of samoan team is a joke ....he is has been parading about talking about Toa Samoa

Nek minute ruled out again, but he would be alright for Manly if it was mid-season
