This is a quote taken from Macko8 in the thread regarding Scotty Logan leaving for greener pastures:

Shillington would be a good replacement for Logan, although i cant see him coming to canberra.Rumour has it we've signed mickey paea???

I was going to post this in that thread, but I think it deserves its own thread.

It got me thinking, actually it got me a little angry.

Firstly, Macko, I'm not having a dig at you here, but geez, is this really what's happened to the mentality of Raiders supporters? We have some room under the cap, probably the most of any club in the NRL with the player exodus we're experiencing at the moment, yet still, we think the best we can do is go after other clubs solid toilers?

God. If we lose that much talent we should have 1 million+ to spend.

We should be agressively chasing two genuine star players if we've got that much cash. Not going after 'solid toilers' like Shillington.

I got to thinking today, our best season in recent years was 2003, what was different about that year? 2002 was the first (and so far only) season where we agressively chased quality players for the following year, and nailed Ian Hindmarsh and Brad Drew, who had been guns at Parramatta (and as much as Drew was deathridden in 04 he was fantastic in 03). We also sewed up Adam Mogg (went on to origin) and signed Matt Rua, although he did jump ship.

But we also agressively went after players like John Morris. It was really the only season where management went really hard after established first grade players, who still had the bulk of their career to run (ie not old hands like Jason Smith).

We went into 2003 with a high level of excitement at this club. The feeling was we'd bought well and had a few star players for the first time in a while.

What happened? We led the competition for 18 weeks. We ran 4th. We were a leprechauns testicle away from beating the Warriors and being in the grand final qualifier.

Why did this happen? I honestly think it was because the 'solid first graders' we had lifted upon gaining quality players. Someone like Jamaal Lolesi, who had been at best mediocre for us to that point, positively played out of his skin that season. Woolford looked like a rep quality hooker. And Marty shined that year, unlike he ever had before.

If the players think we're actively out to find better players when we've got the cash to do so, if for no other reason to look after their own contract, they'll play better. And if we're winning, the good players we do have will want to stay instead of leaving.

Everyone always crows about the fact we've got a great junior nursery and we don't need to buy players, but, newsflash guys: they're all leaving. I'm willing to put money on someone like Justin Carney or Josh Dugan, who are going gangbusters in Toyota Cup, leaving to go elsewhere so they can play alongside rep players to help their career.

We've got money to play with. A lot of money to play with, for the first time in a long time. We have two options: Buy another glut of solid toilers, Marshall Chalks and Glenn Turners, or bite the bullet and throw $450-500k at an origin player or two. Whether or not Canberra has sh*tty weather and a non-existant night life, that amount of money should be enough to entice an origin player or two to Canberra. I only hope that signing Furner as coach rather than chasing John Lang or Daniel Anderson doesn't bite us in this regard, as many players only like to play under recognised coaches.

It's time to cut the conservative bullsh*t. It's time to take a risk. Otherwise we'll always be a 'side of solid first graders' rather than a premiership force.

I wonder how many games you've seen of Dave Shillington... he's better then an "honest toiler"

I've seen plenty. And I'm yet to be convinced.

We'll end up paying overs based on his 'potential' and run the risk of another Frawley.

the rate shillington is developing and playing this year, he'll be a staple of the QLD pack for many years. He'd be a great signing to replace logan... Lopini Paea or Luke Douglas would be better though

For the record:
This is a short list of players id like to see the club target

Ben Hannant - Very good front rower, ideal replacement for logan
Denan Kemp - Looks a pretty good prospect for Brisbane, with Falou going there, its attainable
Isaac De Gois - If Flannagan falls through, we could do worse then De Gois
Luke Douglas - PERFECT replacement for Logan, future rep prop
Matt Ballin - Tidy little hooker, creative and defensively sound, if flannagan falls through, an option
Kevin Proctor PLEASE SIGN THIS KID!!! There are HUGE wraps on him... a few years ago my cousin gave me 4 names to remember for the future, hes a fanatical melbourne fan... Greg Inglis, Isreal Folau, Joel Thompson and Kevin Proctor
Ashley Graham - Good player for the cowboys, had a steller year last year
Luke Priddis - Another hooking option to consider.
Josh Morris - Bloody good player, i rate him highly, his brother Brett isnt bad either
Lopini Paea - Very good front rower, ideal replacement for logan
David Shillington - Very good front rower, ideal replacement for logan
Stuart Flanagan - 1st choice hooking option imo
Bryson Goodwin - if we can secure Bronx and dangling a FG spot with his brother, and its good enough to take him from the sharks, awesome

Essentially i think we need a Prop to replace Logan, a quality hooker and an outside back, thats 3.... maybe 4 signings, here's how id like to see us go:

Position: Order Preferences
Hooker: Flannagan - De Gois - Ballin - Priddis (priddis's age is a factor to be considered)
Prop: - Paea - Douglas - Hannet - Shillington (all good options)
2nd Row: Proctor - If we cant nab him, meh, we're got enough to cover it but a player of his abilities and talents should ALWAYS be chased
Back: Goodwin - Kemp - Morris - Graham (Not vital signing but it'd be nice)

LOL, when Joel earns as many NSW and Aus jerseys Cooper has I'll agree with you. Sure Cooper may be a bit over-rated, but the theme of this thread it trying to get a high profile player or two to the club. Could you imagine the buzz in the media if the Raiders signed Cooper. TBH, I cant see the point in signing honest toilers and possible future rep players. The Raiders have enough of those already. I think what the club needs at this point in time is a big name signing. It would send a message that Canberra has a future, that players want to play there, and that big name players are confident in the direction the club is heading. It would also give a boost both internally within the club and externally to the appointment of Furner as head coach. A bit of a vote of confidence in him.

I agree with Homer.

69, the point I was trying to make is that players want to play alongside stars, and that they'll lift when playing with them.

Shillington, Kemp etc. may well be stars on day, but they aren't now.

I'm not suggesting we do an Easts here and try and buy a premiership, but if we were to sign [for example] Matt Cooper and one other established origin player (and not a mercenary thug like Neville Costigan) then other players would want to play with them, and our juniors would have the advantage of playing and training alongside star players on a weekly basis, which can only make them even better.

And then, when our juniors begin to show promise, when other clubs try and poach them, the lure of playing alongside origin stars will not hold as much sway, as they already will be at the Raiders.

There are not that many "big name" players off contract this yr...so i think it will be another ordinary yr concerning signings. But i wouldnt mind seeing Amos Roberts n Ben Pomeroy in the lime green next yr.

C'mon, our current centres have given Cooper a bath every time we play the Dragons...besides the fact he's a pretty boy beach bum in the Conn mold.

Shillington and Hannant would both be great replacements for Logan. Paea is a gamble, but worth it for the right $$.

Another outside back is the key for us after losing Zillman. Ash Graham, Perrett, Pomeroy or Goodwin would be good replacements. Hopefully we get another season out of Best (but have heard he's gone) and Phil Graham is a bit of a risk these days so we may need another replacement there too.

Flanagan would be a bonus...but if Hinchy continues to improve his dummy half work then maybe not so much of a problem.

Of course M Monas would be the best of the lot...but highly unlikely.

I agree to some point- i mean i'd rather spend 350k on a proven fullback than 200k on goodwin on the chance his form continues to improve. Someone like Mckinnon would have been a perfect acquisition.

Big no imo to matt cooper- you dont pay overs for a defensive centre.

The players in your list to buy imo would be
1. Luke Douglas
2. Shillington
3. Ben Hannant
4. Matt Ballin (awesome hooker, very good at Nrl level, reminds me of richard swain)
5. Mark Henry, Ty Williams, Ben Farrar (all are reasonably talented)
6. Matt head- this one is based on the development of Herbert and Dobson. Heads knees are dodgy and his injury prone, but a good organisational half is all we need with todd on his outside

Get two new forwards- piss off everyone in the front row bar Thompson and Thurling. Keep the backrowers as they are. Ballin is easily the best hooker in the lot, De gois has is in sh*tty form (dropped to bench for sharks) and Flanagan has potential (although his being sized up by newcastle for there hooking gig after Buderus leaves). Ash Graham could never defend but he is going pretty well now.

The only 'star' i see on the off contract lists i just looked at worth signing would be anthony tupou. He'd be great to see in the lime green. If we could blood herbert and see if his got what it takes we'd have quite a nice side.

1. Bronx Goodwin
2. Ty Williams
3. Mark Henry/ Phil Graham
4. Joel Monoghan
5. Adrian Purtell (in the rover sort of role his playing atm)
6. Todd Carney
7. Herbert/Dobson/Matt head
8. Ben Hannant
9. Matt Ballin
10. Luke Douglas
11. Tom Learoyd Lahs
12. Picker
13. Tongue

14. Campese
15. Thompson
16. Thurling
17. Miller

Lol, tell him he's dreaming.

Wats so good about Ben Hannant? Imo he does nothing special and is a honest toiler...and we have heaps of those sort of players atm. We need a impact front rower, someone like Mickey Paea as we have Thomson n Thurling as the workhorse front rower. Steve Southern could be a good replacement for Costigan (granted he goes).
