Looking at off contract lists for next season, plus some of the mail we're seeing in here, lets say that we lose:

1-Zillman
2-Costigan
3-Logan
4-Dobson

Of those players whose contracts are up, we release:

1-Kelly
2-Raston
3-Jones
4-Pearson
5-Best

We then using a fair whack of cash, sign two rep players. For arguments sake (because I doubt any amount of money could tempt these two for Canberra) we'll say:

1-Cooper
2-Tupou

So our run on side could look like:

1-Goodwin
2-Graham
3-Monaghan
4-Cooper
5-Purtell
6-Carney
7-Herbert
8-Weyman
9-Hinchcliffe
10-Thompson
11-Tupou
12-Learoyd-Lahrs
13-Tongue

14-Withers
15-Campese
16-Picker
17-Tilse

With the following rounding out the 25:

18-Chalk
19-Plum
20-Miller
21-Thurling
22-Turner
23-Milne
24-Grintell
25-J.Carney

-------------------

That side, is in my humble opinion, streets ahead of what we have now.

Hannants in the mold (not the same level obviously) of Luke Bailey and Shane Webke for mine. I dont care how much impact our front row has, as long as they are consistent meter eaters and contribute in defense. Even the best impact prop around (moi moi) is being carved into a 60 minute player. That game against the cowboys from Hannant was massive- he seems like the sort of guy who could really be the cornerstone of a pack for years on end.

I like the idea of southern though, he hits hard in defence when his in form.

All dependent on Herbert- otherwise we'll have exactly the same problem we are having this year. Cooper doesn't create opportunities, and unless he see's the ball he'd do nothing. Maybe its also worth some money going after eddie paea.

I've already devoted too much time to this thread. We'll end up signing logan swann, Adam Mcdougall and Danny Nutley

Around about that JM
enough to hopefully nab Stuart Flannagan, Dave Shillington and if god willing, if we provide Dobson as a replacement... Mick Monaghan from Warrington...

that last one is abit of a pipe dream though i fear... but ive herd mail canberra have inquired into his status, and mick might be keen, the sticking point would be warrington

Those four combined would give you about...800-900K?

I think so. But I also see us letting some dead wood like Brett Kelly, Willie Raston and probably even Colin Best (who's only just showing form now) go.

I think we should have about 1.1-1.3 million to play with.

I'm not saying we shouldn't stock up on players with promise, or go after guys who are starting to deliver now, like Flanagan or Shillington, both would go well at Canberra and are garunteed extended runs, but we have enough money to get a real star or two to head down the federal highway, it's about time we did something about it.

I would include Mick Monas as one of the 'high profile' players I talked about earlier 69.

If we had Mick at half and Carney at 5/8 that would be brilliant.

We of course wouldn't have these drama's if Elliot hadn't been such a fu*ktard in his selections re: Monnas. But I digress.

If we pick up Mick, plus a high quality centre, we'd have some real striking power.

We need a prop, hooker, fullback and maybe an outside back.
Luke Douglas. Flanagan. Josh and Brett Morris.Ty Williams?
In a dream world, add Mick Monaghan and we are looking good.

I'd be throwing a cattle load at M.Monas ... absolute no doubt he is the missing link

... I'm sure with the right package he'd be back home to join up with his brother and family and prove to management what a sh*tarse decision it was to give him the flick in favour of Drew and Finch.

... imo we can fit him under the cap by riding ourselves of the likes of Best and the retirement of players such as Logan.

GET HIM HERE MANAGEMENT and I'll take back all I've said in the past.

Got to agree with most posters Mick Monaghan an absolute no brainer for management.
2009 starts today,recruiting wise anyway.
Get in touch with Mick Monas management and make the deal for 2009.Whatever it takes.
The strategy seems to be to get whatevers left after the other clubs have had their pick.
Nyc early season success does look promising but its a long long way short of fg.A third short i'd wager.
We (management)MUST get proactive here.
Tupou/Shillington have a crack at them,we need aggressive ball playing forwards desperately.

I wonder if we are going to go after any english players???
Suprised we didnt sign any english players in this offseason.

If we did i would welcome both Tame Tupou and Jason Cayless

Considering the injuries to our backline already, management must be kicking themselves about not signing Paul Whatuira.

Whatuira was not a gamebreaker and wanted too much coin. We have done better in Joel Monagham IMO. Especially if Joel convinces big brother Mick to come back home.

I agree with Bay56, get Mick back ASAP. He would make a huge difference to our backline.

Someone asked (johns magic I think) about the $$ value of: Costigan, Dobson, ZIllman, Logan....

its only heresay, but I heard Nev came pretty cheap; around the $150k mark, and I heard Zilly wasnt on much either. Dobson signed this year for $200k. What were they thinking paying him $200k to play for Logan?????

Mick Monas + Todd Carney ... these two would even make David Howell look good

I'd be almost certain Monas would want to come back to complete unfinished business at the Raiders.

I would be looking seriously at some of the Storm and Broncos fringe first graders. Don't there contractual arrangements but players like Tagaetese, Manu, Boyd, Moon, Kemp and Michaels would be more than handy.

The club tried to get Michaels a few seasons back. I wonder if they'll try again? Michaels must consider his future uncertain at Brisbane with Folau heading north to play centre, where Michaels wants to play.

Tagaetese would be a good buy and some of those young Broncos backs go ok. Mind you, our record of buying Broncos isnt that good; Frawley, TLL, Costigan have all spent alot of time on the sidelines. The Broncos dont lose players of good value.

I'm all for chasing hard for players but I won't get my hopes up. It's going to be very difficult to attract players with an untried coach. Hopefully we can spot some up & comers.

I'm not opposed to Cooper, he's one of the best defensive centres in the game and that's an area in which we struggle.
