WTF does Dean Bell get paid for ?

Just trying to work out how a kid, playing RUGBY in BRISBANE, and gets signed in Queensland, is lost because Dean Bell in Auckland, didn't do his job?

Are the warriors supposed to tie up every potential league convert with a kiwi background in the world?

The tape shows a kids playing Rugby in Brisbane. Which probably has a really ordinary standard. An average player could look good.

One of my mates younger cousins is currently tearing it up in Akl. 13 year old. I've only seen a few highlight videos, and he looked the goods in that. Similar to Shaun Johnson in terms of speed, agillity etc. Heaps of NRL clubs interested in him...... Even Sir Peter Leitch calls him all the time to check up on him, yet Warriors have done barely anything to try and keep him here. They want to wait till he's older, yet a few aussie clubs are keen to move him over there right away. From whats happened so far, it looks like the fam will be shipping off to the gold coast.

Big loss by the sounds of it..

13 is far too young IMO...

If the Titans want to take up the expense of relocating a 13yr olds family from NZ then good luck to them...

I don't blame the Warriors for staying out of a bidding war with other clubs in that instance.

It is young but if you have many NRL clubs looking at players at that age, then you have to ask why aren't we doing it? Jason Taumalolo was picked by the Cowboys at age 12, its certainly not unheard of for teams to be plucking the best talent out at this age.

Realistically it doesn't cost the Warriors much to attempt to keep him here. Keeping tabs, chucking some gear at him...he already lives in Akl, no relocation costs there.

He has ppl like mad butcher, stacey jones in his ear, gotta mean something.

well its not really hard,, is it ?

aussie clubs have scouts at most kiwi age group comps, they are pretty quick off the mark.

the tape shows a kid who has made oz u15, who absolutely carves up every time he plays...

yea, you're right... warriors wouldnt be interested..

I'm currently taking a boy through the mid teenager years and he has been in the high development programs of two or three sports. The message that consistently comes through from all the elite coaches/managers is that;

"The best players when they are 14, are very rarely the best players when they are 19."

There are a lot factors that come into a person becoming a successful, high performance athlete. Believe it or not, being able to play, is probably pretty low on the list. There is body type and physic, attitude, ability to learn, ability to train, mental toughness, opportunity.

Fair enough. I think the kid had all those attributes, plus.

Same could be said for the Tongan Thor ?

I agree. But I thought the point of the development programs was to identify the talent and then put support in place to aid and encourage the kid to put in the hard work. ie motivate the kid.

If the kid has to do this himself then there is a chance he would rather hang out with his mates or, if he does succeed, go for the highest offer.

Scholarships are a good way to handle these issues.

I think things even out as they move through their teenage years - and of course there are a lot of variables

I also think the rhetoric is partly motivational, to keep those picked in the elite squads motivated to improve and stay ahead, and to keep those missing the squads motivated

Also, in NZ in particular, it's pretty clear that the Pacific kids in particular have a huge headstart in terms of size and athleticism - which closes - ensuring they don't learn sloppy habits (they frequently do) and the smaller equally talents white kids don't give up (they frequently change to other sports) are both important...

Not sure a great job is done of this yet

NZ Rugby apparently signs no one, till they are in a top team. They have development programs for sure, but in the words of Steve Tew, "we don't sign children".

They may lose a few, but they wouldn't be paying for many duds either.

The Tongan Thor is a classic example of a big kid at Schoolboy level who looks like he could do some fitness work. But get into a top level team where everyone is as strong as he is and as fast, would be stand out? Kids that stand out because of their physical development only, will not do well at the top level.

The kid we started talking about looks good. But hell, he has got a long way to go before he is a first grade league player...he hasn't even been playing the game. Thats my point. Pretty hard to say Bell missed him. Missed what I would say? He's a chance. Might be great, might be a dud.
