Webber trade talk
starts to heat up

BY DARREN EVERSON
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

AUBURN HILLS - As tomorrow's trade deadline approaches, there is no conceivable deal that can do for the Knicks what Rasheed Wallace did for the Pistons last season. There are still deals being conceived, however.
Rumors abound that the Knicks are in the running for a number of players, including Sacramento's Chris Webber. The Knicks are also said to be interested in Atlanta's Antoine Walker and Toronto's Donyell Marshall, who continues to draw interest because of his friendly, soon-to-expire contract.

Webber's pact is anything like that. His injury problems make him a huge risk for any team that might acquire him - especially the the Knicks, who would have $110 million tied up in two aging stars coming off microfracture knee surgery.

Webber (averaging 21 points and 10 rebounds) has recovered better thus far than Allan Houston. Still, trading for him would be a major departure from comments Isiah Thomas has made about being wary of acquiring injury-plagued veterans with big contracts.

A deal would also be difficult to work, since the Knicks don't have much the Kings would want. Kurt Thomas, who will ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange this morning, is a trade candidate as always because of his skills and reasonable contract, but the Knicks might have to get a third team involved to make the numbers match up.

As for Marshall, a straight-up deal would be tough because his salary is so relatively low ($5 million). Making a larger deal would likely involve taking on Jalen Rose, something the Knicks are somewhat reluctant to do.

Talks focus on Marshall

By STEVE BUFFERY AND BILL HARRIS, TORONTO SUN

WITH THE NBA trade deadline just one day away, Raptors forward Donyell Marshall continues to draw major interest from around the league. Marshall has been linked to numerous trade rumours, with the Indiana Pacers reportedly showing serious interest in recent days.

A prospective deal would send Marshall and backup point guard Milt Palacio to the Pacers for Austin Croshere, James Jones and Anthony Johnson, according to a league source.

Another rumour has Marshall being shipped to Indiana for Pacers centre/forward Scot Pollard. That deal would make sense from both a player and financial perspective. Marshall, in the final year of his contract, will make $5.3 million US this season while Pollard, who has one more year left on his deal after this season, is making $5.8 million and will earn $6.2 million next year. Pollard, 30, would be an improvement over rookie Rafael Araujo in terms of rebounding and offence.

"Right now, I'd say it's probably less than 50-50 that we do something," Raptors general manager Rob Babcock said last night.

"About 90% of the stuff that's out there on the Internet is totally false. My guess would be there's more of a chance that we don't do something."

According to the New York Post yesterday, the Raptors and the lowly New Orleans Hornets (11-42) are talking deal -- a trade that would send disgruntled guard Baron Davis, who has played only 17 games this season because of a bad back, to Toronto for point guard Rafer Alston, Marshall and Lamond Murray. Davis used to be a top guard, but he has a questionable attitude and comes with a $63-million price-tag for the next four seasons.

However, a league source said yesterday, "There's no way the Hornets will take Alston."

Marshall, a hot commodity in the NBA because of his size and ability to shoot three-pointers with consistency and the fact his contract expires at the end of the season, has also drawn interest from the Miami Heat. One deal reportedly would send forwards Malik Allen and Wesley Person or a draft pick to Toronto, with centre Michael Doleac's name being thrown in for good measure. However, not everyone in the Raptors organization is a fan of Doleac.

Marshall has made it known he would welcome a trade, although he insisted yesterday he is not consumed by the talk.

"I can't control if I'm going to be here or I'm not going to be here," Marshall said.

Here are some other Trade Rumor's.

Rumor has it…

By Joe Lago, Yahoo! Sports
February 23, 2005

The NBA's trading deadline is Thursday at 3 p.m. ET. Here's the latest talk around the league as of 12:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

Ray Allen,

The Rumor: Sonics guard Ray Allen to be shipped out of Seattle.

The Reason: Talks on a contract extension have stalled. Allen's agent is seeking a near-maximum deal of $90 million over five years, while the Sonics are offering a reported $68 million over five years.

The Latest: Allen told the Seattle Times that "there's a great possibility of me being moved" and that Wednesday night's game in New Orleans could be his last with Seattle.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kurt Thomas,

The Rumor: Knicks forward Kurt Thomas to a championship contender.

The Reason: According to the New York Post, Knicks president Isiah Thomas is desperate to make his team younger by the trading deadline. Problem is, Isiah's only commodity might be the 32-year-old veteran.

The Latest: Kurt Thomas told the Post that he "won't be disappointed" if he is indeed dealt, especially to a title contender like San Antonio. The newspaper also reported Wednesday that Isiah Thomas is not allowed to trade the Knicks' first-round pick.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Glenn Robinson,

The Rumor: 76ers forward Glenn Robinson for Hornets forwards Jamal Mashburn and Rodney Rogers.

The Reason: Robinson has been on the injured list all season allegedly because of ankle tendonitis. The Sixers would unload a player who doesn't fit into Jim O'Brien's defensive philosophy and keep the salary-cap room they covet. A knee injury has probably ended Mashburn's career, and Rogers can become a free agent.

The Latest: Sixers president/general manager Billy King told the Philadelphia Daily News that he's talked to the Hornets and other teams, but he won't "move any of our young players."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Donyell Marshall,

The Rumor: Raptors forward Donyell Marshall to Indiana, Miami or San Antonio.

The Reason: The Pacers are the latest to join the sweepstakes for Marshall, who has been targeted as the next Raptor to go since Toronto dealt Vince Carter and shifted its focus to building around Chris Bosh. Marshall's expiring contract, which pays him $5.3 million this season, is as appealing as his three-point shooting and rebounding skills.

The Latest: The Indianapolis Star reported Wednesday that Pacers president Larry Bird had "serious conversations" about Marshall, including one deal that would send Scot Pollard to Toronto. Marshall told the Toronto Sun that his agent is trying to get the Raptors to ship him and Milt Palacio to Indiana for Austin Croshere, Anthony Johnson and James Jones. Raptors general manager Rob Babcock told the Toronto Star that the chances of making any deal are "more like 35-65" and wouldn't trade Marshall unless "you're going to get a player who is good for your future." According to the Miami Herald, the Heat are interested in Marshall but would have to include Michael Doleac, one of Miami's key reserves. The Spurs are looking to get rid of Malik Rose and the four years left on his contract.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Baron Davis,

The Rumor: Hornets guard Baron Davis to Toronto or Atlanta.

The Reason: Last week, Hornets coach Byron Scott criticized Davis for wanting to extend the rehabilitation of his injured ankle in his hometown of Los Angeles. Davis has played in just 17 of New Orleans' 53 games, but the former All-Star's attitude began to sour last summer when his agent hinted that Davis – put off by the team's lack of offseason activity – might want to play for another team.

The Latest: According to the New York Post on Tuesday, the Raptors offered guard Rafer Alston and forwards Lamond Murray and Donyell Marshall, but the Toronto Star reported Wednesday that the Raptors won't do the deal because it limits their salary-cap room for future moves. The Hawks have also showed interest in Davis. The Times-Picayune reported Tuesday that Hornets general manager Allan Bristow met with team owner George Shinn but they weren't considering moving Davis before the trade deadline.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Michael Redd,

The Rumor: Bucks guard Michael Redd to the Warriors, Blazers, Timberwolves, Cavaliers or Grizzlies.

The Reason: Redd has let it be known that he'd like to be LeBron James' sidekick when he becomes an unrestricted free agent in July. The Bucks hope to sign Redd to a long-term contract but face the risk of losing him for nothing.

The Latest: The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel suggested on Monday the following scenarios involving Redd and forward Keith Van Horn, whose contract of one year remaining at $15.7 million makes him attractive – to Portland for Shareef Abdur-Rahim, another player and a draft pick, or to Golden State for Dale Davis, Mike Dunleavy Jr. and picks.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lamar Odom,

The Rumor: Lakers forward Lamar Odom for Kings forward Peja Stojakovic and Kings guard Bobby Jackson.

The Reason: Odom needs the ball in his hands to be effective but that honor belongs to Kobe Bryant. Stojakovic requested a trade in the offseason after Chris Webber criticized unnamed Kings players for lacking toughness.

The Latest: Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak told the Los Angeles Times that Odom had not been offered to any team. However, the Sacramento Bee reported Monday that a Stojakovic deal was discussed among Kings officials but turned down by president Geoff Petrie and co-owners Joe and Gavin Maloof.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chris Webber,

The Rumor: Kings forward Chris Webber to the Knicks.

The Reason: Knicks president Isiah Thomas is due to make another shakeup with the disappointing Knicks, who begin the second half at 21-32 but are only five games out of the East's final playoff spot.

The Latest: Webber's contract, which includes three years at over $62 million, will scare away just about every team – well, every team but the Knicks, who, according to the Chicago Tribune, inquired about Webber. The Sacramento Bee reported Monday that there is "strong sentiment within the Kings organization" to trade Webber, not Stojakovic.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Carlos Boozer,

The Rumor: Jazz forward Carlos Boozer for Lakers forward Lamar Odom or Lakers forward Caron Butler.

The Reason: Larry Miller recently criticized Boozer's inconsistent play, prompting a face-to-face meeting between the Jazz owner and Utah's prized free-agent signing.

The Latest: Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor told the Deseret Morning News that a potential swap with the Lakers is "absolutely ludicrous."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gary Payton,

The Rumor: Celtics point guard Gary Payton to a playoff contender.

The Reason: Payton, who was never in Celtics director of basketball operations Danny Ainge's long-term plans, has asked to be traded.

The Latest: The Boston Herald reiterated Tuesday that there hasn't been much interest in the 36-year-old Payton, who would prefer to play on the West Coast where his family still lives. The Celtics are seeking a top prospect or a first-round pick. One potential scenario involving Indiana and Seattle would send Payton to the Pacers and bring Sonics rookie center Robert Swift (an Ainge favorite) to Boston.

There has been some more trades overnight.

The 76ers have also traded Glenn Robinson to the Hornets for Jamal Mashburn and Rodney Rogers. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1998845

Baron Davis to the Warriors for Dale Davis and Speedy Claxton. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1998925

Keith Van Horn to the Mavs for Alan Henderson and Calvin Booth. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1998910

Antoine Walker back to the Celtics for Gary Payton, Tom Gugliotta, Michael Stewart and a first-round draft pick. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1998923

Malik Rose and a First Round Pick to New York for Nazr Mohammed and Jamison Brewer. Also Vin Baker and Moochie Norris have traded to Houston for Maurice Taylor and a first-round pick. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1998814

That's about it. There were a few interesting trades in there. I'm glad the Knicks got rid of Baker and Malik Rose and Kurt Thomas should be a productive combo.

Baron Davis gets to go back to California should go well with Jason Richardson.

I thought it was funny to see Walker back in Boston. They should have just kept him in the first place and saved themselves the trouble now.

Philly are a real chance to come out of the East if Webber fires. I'd say it'll now be a Miami vs Philly East final now, if they are on seperate sides of the draw. Be a hell of a series.

Never really rated Detroit as a side. I like to think it was more a case of the Lakers imploding last season than the Pistons winning the championship. I think the Wolves and Spurs both would of beaten them last year. I do congratulate them on winning their championship though. If they win again I will gladly recognise them as a great side, because no-one can fluke back to back championships in the NBA. I don't think they have the offense to stay with Miami and Philly. Especially not with Miami.

Its not about offence...its about defence.
Pistons showed that when they beat the Nets and PAcers in the east playoffs.
Lakers didnt implode, Pistons MADE them implode with their swarming defence...something that was foreign to them coming out of the west.
No one rates the pistons as they dont have SUPErstars, but last yr proved that a FULL house, beats 2 of a kind ;-)

Yes, I recognise last season Detroits defense won them through to the Finals in the East. I just don't think it'll do the same this year, and if they do get there I can't see them beating the Spurs. Against any other side in the West I'd give them a shot though. For them to get through the East I think 'Sheed will have to gain some offensive touch, which hes lacked the past few seasons. I think everything went right for the Pistons to win last season, and can't see it happening two years in a row!!!! You're welcome to come back and rub my face in it if they win it all, or even win through from the East :D .

they had a lucky run through the playoffs i think jason kidd was playing injured in the nets series and the against the pacers jamaal tinsley was playing on one leg and jermaine o'neal hurt his knee then karl malone hurt against the lakers they had a lot of luck but they did play some good basketball.
do you think they're playing the same good defense this year? not in my opinion

they are back to where they were pacerboy.
No they have not held 11 teams under 70 like they did last yr, but their defence is 2nd to the spurs...and catching.
This is after they had a bad start to the yr....they thought (as did i) that they would would walk thru the yr, but thats not the case.
The Pistons are back baby...everyone should be afraid...very very afraid ;-)
