Weidler on Carney to Newcastle

He just mentioned on the footy show that Carney will look at either Newcastle or Souths for season 2006 before a move to the Gold Coast for season 2007 and beyond.

I mean we've all been saying that he is a chance to come here and Weidley is hardly a credible source but IMO Carney will be a Knight in 2006. The thing that sh*ts me is that we will just be a hotel for a year for him, though i wouldn't complain if we made the finals with him playing a big part.

You never know. If he plays a season at Newie, finds we perform well, and likes the area- there's plenty of reason for him to stay. As I've said elsewhere, he's great mates with Matthew Johns, and I assume that extends to Joey.

He also said that the Tigers have signed Ryan O'hara.

By god i hope we get Carney, people who haven't seen him play wouldn't understand the talent he is. Speed to burn and he can defend. I still remember the try he scored against Australia last year, hopefully we'll see that kind of stuff from him if he does sign.

Brian Carney is one of the best wingers in the world, and would dominate in the NRL. Fast and strong, he's also got experience to burn and defends brilliantly. Alongside Albert, he's the best winger in the northern hemisphere

Why did Wigan want to release him early then? Dont we need a class centre more than a winger?

pass.

Agreed. As I have posted elsewhere, I see very little value in signing players on one year deals. If Carney wants to go to the GC, let him go. What we need are players who are passionate about rebuilding this once proud club, not guys looking for somewhere to 'park' for a year.

But if he can help make the club more successfull, even in the short term, then we are more likely to be able to bring players to the club who want to help. We are more likely to draw sponsorship to a winning team than a won-nothing team.

I don't think we are in the position at the moment of having the luxury of turning down players just because they only want to play for one year.

...and then he leaves and we are back to square one, and have missed opportunities with other guys.

2 year deal minimum, or we go after someone who will sign for longer.

I dont expect someone to be a diehard clubman just because they come here but I'd rather someone with a bit of loyalty not someone who's here to pick up a pay cheque for 12 months.

3 years minimum we need to sign them for.

As CWB said, perhaps he will stay stay longer. I guess it depends on how his first season goes.

Most EPL players take a while to adjust to the NRL - even those who make it, like Morley for example, don't hit the heights straight away. If you're only getting him for a year, you'll do a great job of getting him tuned up for the Gold Coast to get the benefit.

Secondly, I wouldn't take Weidler's piece as confirmation of anything - he might just be going off the threads on here about it.
