You seemed to be suggesting that having pokies was necessary for employment, they’re not, as witnessed in WA where yes we have pubs and clubs employing people, without the need for pokies.

Where did I say that?

I am merely saying that pokies can be bad but has flow on affects that is a benefit.

Haha, you could say that for just about anything!
Yeh it gives govt taxes to waste, gives some people employment, funds some grants to community groups and keeps professional sports clubs alive. Is that worth the misery and social problems it causes the community? That’s A Matter of opinion, especially as WA has shown you can have all those things without the need for them. anyway they exist so another pointless discussion lol

Pretty funny. Seriously though, there's no reason Manly cannot increase their fanbase and market value by becoming the team for everyone on the North Shore, Northern Beaches and Central Coast. It'll take a generation or two and need the Bears to f**k off, but it can be done. A person born in 2005 isn't going to have an emotional attachment to a team they've never seen play.
Yes they may not have an emotional attachment to a team they haven't seen but their parents did and they now follow AFL and take their kids to the SCG or go and do something else on weekends.
I guess it seemed logical on paper😳😳

Do you have any evidence to back this up or is it just deceitful alarmist rhetoric?

AwFuL has made inroads in NSW and Queensland by targeting children of parents who support rugby league.

f you play rl at school, your mates are following nrl, media is wall to wall nrl, afl,is seen as a joke at school then why the f**k would kids follow afl? as for their parents swapping to swans, there is zero evidence fo this. Swans fanbase didnt increase when bears were booted and I somehow doubt they waited around for a decade to follow the giants!

If kids in Sydney aren’t following nrl,it’s not because of the lack of bears, it’s because the nswrl, nrl and other clubs that could be building a following in the area aren’t doing their jobs properly. Every school in nsw should have touch footy on the sports curriculum and nrl should be funding that with local clubs giving kids stuff etc. absolute myth that if there isn’t an nrl team in your suburb you won’t be interested in following an nrl club. For example roosters could be offering schools in ns Blocks of ticket to the new sfs next year and sponsoring local rl clubs in ns. Be visiting ns schools, offering free ga membership to every registered player in ns and so it goes on. oh but that would upset the bears who cling to a dream of readmission and relevance like a drowning man clings to a life vest.

Compare pokies to someone like Sportsbet though.
WA has them at the Casino though. How much does the State Government make from them?

The Greens in NSW want them out. $7b package to go with that to communities etc. That shows the good to go with the bad

North Sydney Bears are a microcosm of RL's approach to expansion. They would rather hold everyone back to make themselves feel adequate. NSWRL have been doing it for decades. They opposed State of Origin in 1980 because they wanted to maintain the status quo.

It would be good if they got the betting companies out of the game.

I also said they now do something else on weekends because they arent going down to Manly to watch RL....they just arent interested in RL. The market RL won over during the Tina Turner years has now gone, the market that followed a sport because it was the 'in' game.

It was an off the cuff remark re AFL. The fact is people are doing other things then watching and devoting themselves to league as they once did. Maybe after 20 Years of destroying the games image and creating a negative perception of the game, news corp achieved what they wanted.

WA has been sensible enough to limit them to one venue, check the stats that it has had on impact of problem gambling between the two states. Want to play the pokies in wa you’ve got to trek all the way to burswood, not many do.

online problem gambling is another argument and does also need addressing by much stricter rules and a ban on advertising.

You say that but attendances and tv audiences in Sydney would seem to say differently. Again there is no real evidence that the ,alleged, 400k bears fans left the game, and even less that their kids aren’t now playing or following the game. We’ve got clubs like eels and souths hitting 30k members, a club in an expansion state hitting massive membership and tv figures. Tv audiences hitting some all times highs. i don t see the game being any less popular.

And like I said re ns even if they are it’s a problem that can be easily resolved without bringing back the bears, given Sydney another license when we’ve got big cities in nz and australia that have no team to follow would be the epitome of stupidity.

finally they aren’t going to manly because manly are not the team that is trying to attract them, and doesn’t offer a modern or exciting experience to watch live sport. Roosters need to claim the lower north shore and get them to sfs. Once this latest hair brain ns bears bid fails then hopefully they’ll accept they aren’t ever cominback and accept the best they can hope for is to be a feeder area for roosters.

The NSWRL didn't draw strong attendances. The average attendance for 1987 was 9,502, which was similar to the 9,917 the Sydney-based ARL got in 1997.

In 2018 Sydney games averaged 13,509 to 90 games compared to 16,804 for out of Sydney games to 102 games, this is an average of 14,865 if the Broncos are taken out.

Hardly a massive difference.

This is not the issue because if it is based on crowds league would get half the money it gets, it is the TV audience that matters, particularly that of western Sydney. This is the gold mine for the game.
You got those TV figures for 1987?

As you know News Corp own RL now, they have zero interest in Perth or Adelaide otherwise a team would be in already.
Maybe you should inform them of the error of their ways.
But dont worry NZ#2 will be NRL team no. 18.

I would have said that normally but their recent commentary isn’t essentially falling over themselves for NZ 2#

Taking the above comments re Norths and Manly and the North Shore how would a similar situation go with one Hull team in the UK, according to GROTD after 20 Odd years people will not have grown up with two clubs and league will be the winner, no Aussie Rules to drift off to follow.

I’d be happy with them just being thrown out of pubs. Go back to the old days where they had actual poker machines. You could have 10. Maybe just reduce all pubs to 5–10 each.

That makes no sense, why would news corp want nz2? Warriors are the lowest drawing club on fox/kayo.

That makes no sense, why would news corp want nz2? Warriors are one of the lowest drawing clubs on fox/kayo.

The argument is that they wouldn’t have to provide any extra money. Fair enough that is a strong argument notwithstanding what happened with the Dolphins.

The problem is their reporting hasn’t really supported that view. They are piling on the Warriors (probably fair enough although like the Tigers I wished they tempered it a little) and some of their reporters have openly questioned the validity of a second team.

Now you can discount some of that, particularly if you fall on the side of editorial independence.
