Fulton set to be fall guy as as cap bites Tigers

Greg Prichard | February 13, 2009
WESTS TIGERS are likely to be forced to cut lock Liam Fulton from their playing roster for this season due to salary cap pressure.
NRL salary cap auditor Ian Schubert is set to tell the club they must make a sizeable financial re-adjustment before the start of this season or face a fine.
There have been suggestions Fulton, who has two years left on his contract, might be loaned to English club Huddersfield for this season and return to the Tigers for next year, but indications are the 2005 champions would struggle to get such a "parking" arrangement approved by the strict Schubert. It now appears more likely they will move to end their contractual arrangement with Fulton - as long as his management can strike a deal in England.
"It [the Fulton move] was on the agenda late last year, then off the agenda, but it could be back on," Tigers chief executive Scott Longmuir said yesterday. "We've talked to some English clubs, but I don't want to speculate too much on whether it might happen in case it doesn't come to fruition."
Longmuir did say the Tigers had discussed the possibility of a move with the 24-year-old Fulton, who was on the interchange bench when the Tigers won the grand final over North Queensland three seasons ago.
"Liam is open to the idea of playing over there [Britain]," Longmuir said. "And, if it happened, we believe it could be good for him. He's a young bloke, and it could be a great life experience for him. It could help the maturing process for him, both as a player and a person."
Circumstances forced the Tigers over the cap last year and they need to get back under it by the time this season starts. "You're always reviewing your roster, and sometimes you have to tweak things," Longmuir said. "Ian Schubert has done his audit at the club. He looks at 2008 and comes up with a decision on where he thinks you're at for 2009, and we're waiting for his final advice now.
"We should receive that within a few days. After we have a look at it, we will have the opportunity to counter it with our own view. A club's situation under the salary cap is constantly changing. Sometimes, you can get a lot of injuries, and the players who come in receive match payments that have to go under the following year's cap. It can be the same with bonuses. All clubs go through this sort of process."
There has been speculation the Tigers would have to shed as many as three players, with centre Dean Collis another mentioned as a possibility to go, but Longmuir said it would not come to that. "We won't be losing three players," he said.
Asked if Collis might be on the move because of the salary cap issue, the player's manager, David Riolo, replied: "Dean is not going anywhere."

WTF???????????? How the hell can this be an issue? We retain the also rans - Galea, Payne Trimarchi and shop off Fulton. We must be paying the also rans too much money compared to other clubs- no wonder they are keen to find WT's McDonnell for their signature.

Clean out the board and recruitment / coaching staff- something is terribly wrong somewhere.

We have close to the worst squad in the comp with most of the squad positions outside the top 17 going to juniors who have barely played first grade and still we are over the cap:crazy:

f*ck you wests tigers, you are the laughing stock of the nrl. i hope we run last this year

I certainly cant see even top 8- probably down towards the bottom- ah, what a great squad.

What is going wrong out there? Where is implementing best practice? Is it that WT constantly leave any recruitment until last minute hence paying top dollar for left overs? WHAT IS IT? SOMEONE'S GOT TO GO FOR THIS!!!

how 24 players are over the cap, is rediculous.

we've lost, ohara, hodgo on pretty good money
harrison, teo and flannigan on average money.

picked up one top quality backrower, and we're over the cap.
we must have a lot of guy on massive overs.
i hope the first option is to get players to take a paycut before offloading Fulton

Looks like even making a competitive offer to Marshall is gone if WT are in so much salary cap trouble now. They spent big to keep Farah- they would seem to be unable to spend big again to keep Marshall.

How the hell do the other clubs do it?

maybe we've just got a lot of players on a lot more than they are worth.
our highest paid players would be Marshall, Farah and Ellis based on prestige.

i know we paid a bit for Galloway and Heignington

Laurie would've had a pretty big upgrade on his contract, and Lawrence as well.
payne was on a big backloaded contract, i think he got paid 50k last year so i would assume it's a lot more now.

i don't know how the club operates, but if someone was to blame would it be the prior CEO?
might explain the sudden depatcher.

Yeah, somethings got to give- hopefully WT management will realise change in recruitment staff and salary negotiation practices are needed. Gee, what a hole the club has dug for itself..................

We cant sack Noyce,he is already gone but the present board needs to be over thrown. The club is in turmoil a month out from the first game. With membership roumored to be well below what was expected and now our cap problems being exposed things are looking pretty sh*t.y for 2009

You just wonder how a outfit that probably runs a 10million dollar a year budget gets its so wrong so much of the time.

Anyway standby for the spin from camp concord it will be comming thick and fast

Turmoil??? What turmoil?

Apart from long suffering forum members such as our lot, nothing ever seems to bubble to the surface. Teflon Tim escapes serious questioning and accountability over tactics and player selection, WT recruitment never gets nailed, WT management never gets held to account.

We hear the rumours of dissent and unhappiness but nothing ever happens..................

Elliott (Penrith) and Smith (Newcastle) are more under the gun than anyone at WT.

Over on the offical website forum I have never seen I have never seen such a total negative response to the plight the tigers have got themself into.
On most issue their are people who would back the club a 100% on any issue but this one is a 100% against. So I really hope the powers to be take note its not just the negative nevs like myself but nearly the whole forum who are upset with nuffteys who run OUR club

No chance of us losing points when we run down the bottom of the comp. Three people are responsible for this , Ronald and his awful recritment apart from his son and Ellis, Sheens for doing nothing to stop him and Noyce for approving all these payments and then running like a girl to the Roosters when he knew the sh*t was going to hit the fan. Sack the two that are left and start again. Our club has been runied for years to come by these mongrels.

The problem with our mid-range, decent players is that after the 2005 grand final you would have every reason to believe that they would turn into stars, lets not forget that most of them won a competition at the age of 21, 22, 23 years of age. Now after winning a competition you would expect that these same players who, in the meantime got considerable upgrades on their contracts for the potential talent that they displayed, would kick on and 4 years down the track be established, consistant first grade footballers. To some degree I can't blame Noyce because the players had just won a grand final and were all playing exceptional football at the time of upgrades etc and if some other club came and poached them then the club would still be in turmoil. Kind of like a catch 22.

The rest of the blame should be aimed towards the CEO and the image of the football club. Its just a common fact that coming to the wests tigers is not an attractive proposition for footballers and therefore we have to pay overs to attract any sort of talent. This and this foremost must be improved and must be the number one focus of the club. How can the administration of the football team improve so that players will want to come to our club? I think playing out of one purpose built homeground would be a great start but again funding is an issue and by neglecting the SFS we are missing out on big money coming into our pockets! Its time the tigers took were proactive and started to look at how we can make our football club the strongest firstly in Sydney, then in the NRL and until we do that we will continue to pay overs for these mediocre footballers who dont fear for their positions in the top 17.

The previous post is on the money. Noyce and Sheens rightly or wrongly got it all wrong after 2005. Our middle range players (and we have lots) all got paid well above market value on the expectation they were going to be the next best thing and of course it never happen and if anything the majority have slipped back a peg or two. Also Sheens persisted with his junior program and locked and upgraded a number of juniors in by using cap money and space.

It is obvious now that we have a lot of players who would struggle for a bench spot at most other NRL clubs are on fat juicy contracts. Now hindsight is a wonderfull thing but the fact is its gone pear shape and the cracks are getting bigger by the day. The signs have been their for all to see but our leaders wait to the ship runs a ground before reacting.

In saying all the above their is a cap they have to work within, that was invented to protect the likes of us against the big cheque book teams and our mob stuffed it up
