I use to watch plenty of reserves at Leichhardt and would go to Henson Park & Belmore as well, it always surprised me that there was always (to me anyway) a lack of 1st grade players at games to support the reserves when the NRL team were in Sydney and has played the night before or were playing on the Sunday. It was just i spotted Josh Reynolds and looked up into the stand to give him the thumbs up as i had a WT's jacket on and then i noticed that dumb smiling wanker amongst them ...i didnt stand there and stare to see who else was with them but out of 5 or 6 i didnt see any faces that stood out from our team...
http://www.nswrl.com.au/news/2017/06/02/illawarra_maul_tiger.htmlDefending premiers Illawarra have maintained their place in the Intrust Super Premiership Top Four with an easy 36-8 win over an outclassed Wests Tigers in their match at WIN Stadium, Wollongong tonight.
Matthew Head’s men started the match on fire – after just ninety seconds, a Jai Field cut out pass found fullback Matt Dufty, who in turn hit winger Izaac Thompson on the chest for the powerful winger to open the scoring untouched in the corner. Shaun Nona converted for a 6-nil Illawarra lead after just three minutes.
Illawarra dominated the early exchanges to the extent that the Tigers did not get their first full set in possession until the 11th minute.
Blessed with such dominance, Illawarra doubled their lead in the seventh minute when after a double repeat set and goal line drop out, a Nona grubber kick behind the nonplussed Tigers found centre Pat Herbert who scored. Nona’s conversion got Illawarra off to a 12-nil lead.
When the Tigers finally got some football, they forced repeat sets off the back of two quick penalties in the 17th minute for a quick Jeremy Marshall-King pass out of dummy half to find Bayley Sironen who stood in a tackle to send winger Toa Mata’afa who burst through two defenders for the visitors’ first try.
Jordan Rankin missed the conversion to keep the Illawarra lead at 12-4.
Illawarra were quick to reply four minutes later when a sweeping left side backline movement saw Dufty make the extra man to find Thompson who scored his second try with an extravagant dive in the corner and a 16-4 lead to the home side.
After replacement Tigers centre Christian Yassmin was bundled into touch when trying to clear from inside his own half 11 minutes from half time, Illawarra were quick to pounce.
From the set following their scrum win, a long Nona 20 metre cut out pass found Thompson again, who carried three defenders over the line to complete his hat trick of tries in the corner. Nona again missed the conversion and Illawarra led 20-4.
A further double repeat set for Illawarra from a goal line drop out in the last two minutes of the first half saw replacement hooker Ryan Fletcher get out of dummy half from close range to send interchange forward Jacob Hind crashing over for his first try near the posts. Nona converted as the half time siren sounded to give Illawarra a commanding 26-4 lead at the break.
The home side threatened to turn the match into a rout when just three minutes into the second half a short pass from Nona found Hind again barging his way through the Tigers goal line defence for his second try. With Nona’s conversion, the match was virtually won for Illawarra with a 32-4 lead.
The match then got bogged down for the remainder of the game as the Tigers kept making errors and Illawarra’s attack dropped off a shade as they were caught a number of times in possession on the last tackle without getting to their kicking game.
After Thompson intercepted a loose Sironen pass and dashed 60 metres down his flank to set up field position, a lovely inside pass from Nona found Dufty steam into a hole at top pace against the grain to score the home side’s last try of the night. Nona’s conversion hit the upright for a 36-4 lead.
The Tigers never gave up and were rewarded for their efforts with five minutes left when a Rankin re-gathered his own grubber kick close to the Illawarra line to feed skipper Nathan Milone who scored the last try of the night. Rankin again missed the conversion to complete the handsome 36-8 victory for the home side.
Illawarra travel to the Belmore Sports Ground next Saturday for their next match against Canterbury-Bankstown, while the Tigers have another tough assignment against competition high flyers Wyong Roos at Campbelltown Stadium next Sunday at 11:45am.
The Wyong Roos have have put together a clinical second-half performance, claiming a 42-22 victory over a valiant Wests Tigers outfit at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
After posting back-to-back tries in the opening five minutes, the Roos let slip an early lead with the Tigers fighting back to earn an 18-all scoreline at the break, but the ladder leaders showed their class in the second 40 to continue their undefeated winning streak.
Roos fullback Luke Sharpe was instrumental in the victory with a two-try performance, while Justin Toomey-White proved threatening with the ball in hand while scoring a try of his own.
Halfback Jordan Rankin put in a classy performance for the Tigers with his crafty kicking game, and worked well with back-rower Joel Edwards who crossed for two first-half tries.
The Roos opened their account with some strong carries from Nat Butcher and Eloni Vunakece laying a strong platform, and a spiralling bomb was unable to be defused and eventually landed in the arms of Matt Ikuvalu who crossed for their first try of the afternoon.
Their momentum couldn’t be halted from the following kick-off with an early offload allowing for some open space for Justin Toomey-White, with the front-rower steaming down the left hand side and evading the fullback to score back-to-back tries.
Jeremy Marshall-King was proving to be a significant threat for the Tigers with some evasive runs from dummy-half, and it wasn't long before they reaped the rewards with Watson Heleta scoring their first try following a well-executed backline movement.
An array of ill-discipline from the Roos, including the kick-off going out on the full, invited the Tigers straight back into the contest with Joel Edwards taking full advantage and barging his way over for their second unanswered try.
Despite some defensive lapses following their strong start, the Roos hit back in style with dynamic fullback Luke Sharpe bursting through the Tigers defence before streaking away from his counterpart to score in the left hand corner.
Josh Mantellato kept hold of his perfect kicking record with a brilliant sideline conversion to take a 18-12 advantage with 15 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Tigers continued to fight hard with Jordan Rankin as he controlled the game with some classy kicking that earned valuable field position, and they soon found themselves level again as Joel Edwards crossed for his second try.
The closing exchanges of the opening half were hotly contested as both sides look to find a vital half-time lead, but their respective defensive efforts were enough to keep an 18-all scoreline.
The Tigers started the second half in perfect style with Malakai Waltene-Zelezniak scoring off another classy backline movement to claim an early lead, before their committed goal-line defence also proved too strong for the Roos.
Another spiralling bomb from Cornish continued to cause havoc for the Tigers back three, with the Roos pouncing on the loose ball and sending it wide to Mantellato to score a much-needed try.
Mantellato converted his own try right from the sideline, recapturing the lead for the first time since the opening 10 minutes of the contest.
The Tigers showed their resilience with some barnstorming runs up the middle third, but the Roos found their groove in defence and managed to hold out a host of attacking raids.
Brimming with confidence, the Roos found some eventual momentum and responded with some brilliant runs of their own, and a brilliant offload found Grant Garvey who brushed off a host of would-be defenders to score a crucial try to the left of the uprights.
The Tigers were shades of the team that started the match with consistent handling errors ruining their chances of a potential comeback, and the Roos wasted little time in sealing the game as Luke Sharpe capped off a brilliant individual performance when he burst onto an inside ball to score his second try of the game.
The Roos put the icing on the cake with Jake Lewis crashing over in the final two minutes, running away with a strong 42-22 victory to hold their lead on top of the Intrust Super Premiership NSW ladder.
Wyong Roos 42 (L Sharpe 2, M Ikuvalu, J Toomey-White, J Mantellato, G Garvey, J Lewis tries; J Mantellato 7 goals) def Wests Tigers 22 (J Edwards 2, W Heleta, M Watene-Zelezniak tries; J Rankin 3 goals)
It would be great if we had a lower grade half who was good enough to handle himself competently in the NRL as I'm not entirely confident about Brooks going forward into '18 & we need an adequate backup if he continues to have hammy issues. It will b interesting to monitor Gamble's progress next season as well as Mapesone.Interested to see how Mapesone goes. He looked likely in NYC. Good size for a half and takes the line on, also played fullback and filled in at center. I thought he might be a guy who could fill a utility spot on the bench in 1st grade one day as he looked big enough to also play in the forwards.
