Malaysian car-maker Proton has announced it has agreed to become the naming rights sponsor of the 2005 NRL Premiers, the Wests Tigers from the commencement of season 2006.

Proton has signed a two-year contract with the club, which has proved to be the surprise packet of the 2005 NRL competition going all the way to win the title.

According to Proton Cars Australia managing director John Startari, the opportunity to back the tigers is one that could not be passed up given the branding synergies and marketing opportunities, the franchise offers.

"Proton is the only car companyy in the world to have a tiger as its emblem so it was logical that we use the Wests Tigers to increase awareness of Proton in Australia," said Mr Startari.

"The Tigers performed above everyone's expectations this year using a young, fresh teamof players with a focus on achieving their goals and we believe they will be a real force in the NRL for years to come," he added.

"Proton will be laujnching a number of significant new models in Australia during 2006 and will also be expanding our dealer network particularly in the Sydney region."

This sponsorship will deliver a massive lift in awareness for Proton in Australia particularly in NSW and Queensland which are vital markets for us," Mr Startari said.

"There are a number of qualities the Tigers have which make this anideal fit.

"Apart from sharing the tiger as an emblem they are a young, vibrant and entertaining team, they have a wide support base and they will enable us to take our message to millions of people," he added.

"With fantastic young players such as Benji Marshall and Scott Prince the Tigers have an exciting and very appealing player line-up that will help Proton reach its target audience," he said.

Despite the success the club has earned this season Proton did not just jump on the band wagong over the past month, negotiations commenced between the company and the Tigers early in 2005.

Rugby League attendances have boomed this year with spectator numbers up by over 20 percent this season while TV viewing numbers have also soared during 2005.

Proton is on target to sell approximately 2400 new cars in Australia in 2005 reflecting a 75 percent increase in the company's 2003 sales.

The company has a goal of achieving 5000 sales per year in Australia by 2007 and will be appointing a number of new dealers in the Sydney metropolitan area during the next six months to grow sales in the nation's largest vehicle market.

Proton Cars Australia also distributes the specialist niche sports cars which are manufactured by Proton's wholly owned British subsidiary, Lotus.

Sanyo and M.E. were on board and stayed on board right through... I wish other clubs had long term sponsors like our clubs LF...

But the Panthers were LUCKY to have a sponsor like Sanyo in the first place.

I mean, the Panther sucked. They were a rotten club at the bottom of the ladder and yet they had a great sponsor.

The Tigers from memory did a last minute deal with their sleve sponsor at the beggining of the year to atleast get some sort of cash out of the front of their jersey.

The only reason I dont like sponship changes like this (And its a silly reason really) is that anyone that went out and got a Tigers jersey during the last few months will now have an "Old" jersey.

I'm sure you understand, but it's evolution.

I don't think the Raiders would get much money leaving Woodgers on their jersey.
