Optus Sport has over 600k subscribers. When I was growing up in the 90s the kids at my school watched nothing but soccer, especially the EPL. Many of them didn't know the difference between RL and RU.

Like Shane Richardson said, the Sydney model hasn't worked in over 100 years, but there are lunatics who want to keep it going because of tradition.

lol the f**k school did you go to? i went to school in Brisbane in the 90s and League dominated, EPL was not a thing until the 2000s. AFL was a joke game and RU was something private school kids played in between soggy sao.

I went to a religious school on the southside of Brisbane. It played RL and soccer, but many of its students were from southern Europe, China, Taiwan, Korea, Brazil and South Africa. That's the future of most schools in Australia as 30% of our residents were born overseas.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/For...of the highest immigration rates in the world.

It was a different story when I went to a state primary school in the early 90s, as most of the kids were born and bred Aussies. We played RL, cricket and basketball at primary school. It was a huge culture shock when I went to a religious high school that had as many, if not more, students from soccer-dominant countries, who stuck together and didn't feel the need to play Aussie games. I felt like the outsider.

Notice Donkey Dickhead won't answer where the Bears fans went.

Because they should have loved their new creation - the Northern Eagles.
Bears had bugger-all fans to begin with, hence the reason they were broke. Despite being very competitive on the field during the 1990s, they only averaged more than 15k in 1991 and 1994. In the 1980s their average attendance figures per season only reached five figures 3 times.

That's not enough supporters to be a viable club. They deserved to be axed.

Just come to grips with reality and accept that the demand for RL in Sydney is much lower than its supply of teams. It was inevitable that the weakest clubs would fold. If it wasn't for broadcast revenue from Murdoch, who you hate, then another 2 or 3 Sydney clubs would have folded years ago. Now stop your sooking.

NRL was a continuation of the ARL and the NSWRL.

You really are desperate if you think they are not the same.

BRL clubs by the way kept their history when they played the defunct state league.

Can you imagine AFL deleting its history to appease some knob in Townsville?
NSWRL pre-1988 was a less prestigious competition because it was competing with BRL for the game's best players. Around 60 of the BRL's best players entered the NSWRL in 1988, increasing the standard of play.

The best team in the country during the 1980s was the Wynnum Manly Seagulls, who had four Australian Kangaroos in their squad. No team from the NSWRL had a better roster. Combined Brisbane beat your teams.

I love Balmain to bits but it's pretty clear that the JV hasn't worked.

Why ?
Balmain would have been gone otherwise and possibly magpies (don’t know west’s Ashfield financial strength at that time , but I remember their leagues club was a hole back then and now it’s awesome).

What makes a success ? Grand final wins ?
Some stand alone clubs in Sydney and outside of Sydney have not won the comp in nrl era yet tigers have won a comp .
Performances are cyclical , seems tigers rebuilding pathways and might not be far off again challenging for the 8.
Look at broncos currently basket case , Souths could become that in the future , bulldogs been basket case for 5 years now

Have more faith in your side , good times will come again

... and?

I’ve lost track what you’re arguing about here.

Let me explain this to you slowly.......some Souffs MENSA members here have been putting forward the suggestion that Wests & Balmain are dead as a result of the Tigers JV. Some cheeky Tigers fans have responded that the same applies to Souffs as they sold out to their two fairy godfathers. "No...no...no its the same club" the toothless but faithful cry.

Your post cleary illustrates that the board representation of the previous club at Souffs is exactly the same as that of Balmain at WT.

Home I guess after North Sydney management sent the club broke. Norths didnt get "kicked out", nor did they get "forced" into a merger with Manly. They went broke and into administration prior.

Because they should have loved their new creation - the Northern Eagles.

Something is better than nothing. Manly merged with Norths after Norths went into administration.

Probably true because I am pretty sure the Eels who won 4 premierships were full of no names. Combined Brisbane showed they were clearly better than the Sydney teams, winning the Amco Cup once.

Second highest Sydney club for support based on attendance, record membership numbers, profitable.....all whilst playing like crap.

Sleeping giant.
Agree, I think their potential is in the fact they arent married to just one catchment area with less than 500k people in it. Whilst their nomadic existence isnt great at the mment it does mean they are in effect potentially popular with a lot of central, western and SW Sydney. Get a decent central point stadium and a winning team and they will be up there with Eels as Sydney's biggest club imo. At the moment they seem a bit stuck though between what they once were and what they could be.

Parramatta had a great roster, but Wally Lewis was king and three of his fellow Australian Kangaroos teammates were playing with him at the Seagulls. Combined Brisbane won once, but that was a team put together from scratch to play against Sydney clubs that had trained with one another over months and formed combinations with one another. Combined Brisbane always had the players, but they didn't have the time to build combinations and were playing alongside blokes who they were lining up against in the BRL.

I'll probably cop shit for this, but I think Dragons, Tigers and Roosters are best equipped to join Rabbitohs and Parramatta as clubs with massive supporter bases that can match the Broncos and Storm. Panthers have potential as well because they have a large catchment that is growing.

Oh yeah a private school nuffie....

Say no more....If that's South Brisbane then you have a huge European Orthodox presence especially Greek.

I'm surprised they weren't watching netball.

Meanwhile most schools in Australia aren't full of immigrants and the rate would be more 1% at best.

In fact in over 20 years of teaching I could count the immigrants on one hand.

We're going back to the 80s now....bahahaha

oh and their crowds beat Easts, Penrith, Cronulla, Canterbury....and they were always there abouts in the finals. They were screwed by the sponsorship criteria because their sponsors gave them credit not cash.

But as we can see, you don't give a flying f**k about nrl fans.

They can go watch the Swans, EPL or NBA for all you care.

Yes your club took Murdoch's millions in silver to stab those who admitted it in the back.

How much money are the Cowboys making out of pokies now?

You bet I hate Murdoch.

He's a cancer on the world and the sooner he dies, the better.
