I will also add that I hope that management has something in the pipeline to replace those that are leaving .. and I dont mean the likes of Nathan Smith.

If they dont we are going to be just one ordinary team for the next few seasons with an inexperienced coach who has no pulling power to attract players of quality.

Personally I'm not to fussed if he does leave. Yes i would prefer him to stay but we have given him so many chances to prove his worth and I'm still yet to be convinced that he deserves the high raps so many people give him. I find it strange its still unconfirmed. In any case he should stick by the club, its us who have put up with his constant injuries/suspension over the past few years. Have some god dam faith!!!

I think its a case of management not wanting to retain Weyman, rather than him nor wanting to stay.

definately.

Unless the club signs some real marque players, they will be set for a very low number of season ticket holders, unless ofcourse canberra make the semi's or something.

Although I must say seeing the number of players being cut, it does appear they will try to make some real key signings. Here's hoping.

I must say that his moving came as a complete shock to me also..I had not even heard a whisper of it happening.
Losing Horse and Logan makes it imperative the Raiders retain Costigan imo. The trio provide a lot of impact and toughness to the side...

Its not that big a loss when you look at the amount of games Weyman and Costigan have played.

Be interesting to know the amount of games Weyman, Costigan and Logan have played together. It would be very low.

I have doubts on Weyman's future playing career. The amount of injuries and problems he's had with his ankles and wrists isn't promising.
Anyway all the best to him. I would love to see him playing for NSW.

Has anyone seen confirmation of Weyman leaving? I can't find anything anywhere. Only speculation on radio this morning as far as I know.

I find it hard to believe that he is leaving ... expressed his desire in the past that he prefers the country lifestyle.

Given the Dragons are mostly based in Wollongong, it wouldn't be that big a change from Canberra.

All we can do is offer him money to come , you'd expect with Zilly , Possibly Costigan , Logan and Weyman going we'd have some cash spare.
Its nice to see the Raiders out and about in the market , and looking at quality players , apparently we went close to getting Nightingale ( spelling ) , then again it can be all managers talk to bump prices up.

Canberra prop Michael Weyman appears set to move to St George-Illawarra next season after the Dragons offered him a two-year deal worth a reported $200,000 a season.

After another week of frenetic player and coaching movements, The Canberra Times can reveal that:
The Raiders are making a play at Sydney Roosters prop David Shillington, which if successful will leave Weyman on the outer.
Weyman's manager Steve Stone will meet with Raiders officials during the week in a bid to convince the club to up its offer.
Furner met with player manager David Riolo at last night's City v Country game in Wollongong as he continued attempts to re-sign centre Adrian Purtell and secure North Queensland Cowboys assistant Ian Millward to the Raiders coaching staff for 2009.
The Raiders have also expressed interest in off-contract Wests Tigers and Country Origin back-rower Chris Heighington.
Furner met with Heighington's manager Wayne Beavis on Thursday, when the pair also discussed the future of former Dragons five-eighth Trent Barrett.
Weyman yesterday confirmed he had fielded offers from both the Raiders and Dragons, but declined to comment further.
The Canberra Times understands the Dragons' offer was considerably higher than the Raiders'.
Furner said he would discuss upping Weyman's offer with incoming coach David Furner this week, but the club was unlikely to match the Dragons deal.
Stone said his client's preference was to remain in Canberra, where he had spent his entire playing career.

He said he would meet with Furner next week to determine whether the Raiders were committed to his injury-prone client's future.
Weyman is currently serving a seven-match suspension for striking and won't be back in action until round 13.
He has played just 43 NRL games since debuting in 2003 thanks to a string of injuries and suspensions.
Stone said Weyman was eager to prove he was a long-term NRL prospect.
"He is really motivated to show himself, any athlete would, but the injuries and the suspension haven't helped things. But the [Dragons] feel that he's got his best football in front of him. Now we need to find out where he sits with the Raiders."
Furner confirmed the Raiders were eager to lure Shillington to Canberra, with the Roosters hardman likely to be a victim of his Bondi-based club's front-row riches.
The Raiders were also keen to sign Heighington, who made his representative debut off the bench for Country last night. Heighington would make a perfect replacement for Queensland State of Origin enforcer Neville Costigan, who appears set to leave the club to join the Gold Coast Titans.
The Raiders also remain in the race to secure Barrett, who is reported to be close to winning a release from English Super League club Wigan to return to Australia.
Cronulla and the Dragons are also eager to secure Barrett, whose mother lives in Canberra.
Furner's meeting with Riolo last night could also clear up two contentious issues for the club.
The Raiders are desperate to re-sign Purtell, who has also received an offer from the Melbourne Storm.
Millward is also high on the Raiders wish list to serve a mentor-type role under incoming coach David Furner next season.
Millward, who has also reportedly received an offer to be head coach of Super League team Catalans, was yesterday uncertain of where he stood at the Raiders.
"They have a great set-up down there and I've spoken to a few of the guys down there to get a feel of it," Millward said.
"It's a good place and it would be good to work down there."
Hard to believe we won't match offer for Weyman of $200K per season. I don't see what is so good about Shillington.

Regardless of who we sign/lose at least we can take comfort knowing managament is actually scouting players for the future, a few key signings as well as ensuring we lock up our key under 20's will go along way to ensuring future success.

Can't help thinking Shillington will come under the Bulldogs radar now that they have missed Lima. Kid of hoping they are successful.

At the end of the day we simply can't afford to lose both Weyman and Logan and also miss out on Heigno and Shillington.

This is where the grand plan of having 40,000 players off contract in one season has bit us on the arse. While worrying about Purts and Campo etc the best of the rest elsewhere are getting snapped up.

Strepsels Chach ??

but yea I agree ... if we dont start making some BIG signings we'e doomed to the lower half of the table.
Thanks mate - just a bit of phlegm.

In my ideal world I'd like to have 2 out of Weyman, Shillington and Heighnington. We need at least one and can't afford to miss out on all 3 with Logan gone.

I still think Mick's best days are ahead of him and I think he's shaken his injuries, but $200K with his judiciary record is a big risk. Having said that it scares me that he could be another Ben Cross.

I'd also like to gamble on Rooney and hold onto Purts. Apparently Henry and Dave Furner have had a chat to Purts and have told him that a centre spot is certainly up for grabs next season. I guess that means shifting phlying phil to his far better (IMO) spot on the wing. Rooney would give us another value option out wide given we've missed out on Perrett (my preference) and Nightingale.

If we can do that and retain Campo I'll be happy. Not sure what to do with Colin Best as Rooney fits the same bill and is quite a few years younger. I'd like to retain Hinchy too.

Chalk, Jones, Costigan and Turner will have to find a home elsewhere along with Dobbo, Zillman and Logan.

My worry is that we are interested in alot of players, and come up empty , Id imagine we are in a better position to offer some decent cash to lure the likes of Shillo and heighington , but Id think we are able to offer Horse a contract maybe less than the Dragons and still he would stay, buts its still positive that we are trying to get quality players to come to green land.

Boyo Chachi when I read your last post it makes me wonder what sort of a team we'll have next season.

Star players like Carney can only do so much if they dont have the support players around them ... a strong forward pack is paramount to those ends. Atm it seems as though we are losing a lot and gaining only the likes of N.Smith.

Well I'm here to tell you all that if management dont start opening up the wallets in an effort to entice QUALITY players and pull a few rabbits out of the hat we are destined to not only have a very average few years but also lose the likes of Carney who will obviously seek greener pastures (and I wouldnt blame him in doing so).

Management have to change their thinking ... it is simple as that ... if other sides can do it then so can we.

I would also add that if the stories concerning Benny's desire to be our next coach were in fact true then Donny Furner can live with the fact that his bother has the pulling power of a 90yo grandpa with arthritis ...

... we have the chance to gain the services of the most successful coach in the NRL and we say no thanks, we're going for an untried coach (who happens to be a member of the family).

FFS this club has huge problems ... and they all originate from the same source.

But yea, I'm just a whinger with no viable alternatives.
