Still on the theme of things.I don't like dance music etc,but years ago a group by the name of ''Utah Saints'' brought out a tune with no real lyrics but they overdubbed Kate Bush's voice onto their tune.To me all their stuffs bollocks accept for this one tune.I love it,but i dislike the rest of their stuff and that particular genre of music.

That might have been "Blue Skies" and I'm quite sure it was Tori Amos, not Kate Bush.

Just dug out Ted Nugents ''double live gonzo''...the lyrics mean stuff all but it's just raw guitar and throat. Not a particularly good throat but it suits the tunes.

Lyrics are incidental, singers voice helps though.. For example, Maynard's voice is like another instrument in tool, what he is singing about doesn't really matter.

Being a little bit different definitely helps.

I am drawn to the talent in metal bands, love or hate the sound, many of them are extremely talented which is a definite plus with me..

Music videos don't influence me at all, using tool again as an example, I don't think I have ever understood a film clip of theirs and I tend to not really hear the music while watching them as I am always thinking WTF is going on.. :)

Could also bring studio vs live tunes/bands.Maybe a different thread.

Can someone answer this one for me. What makes a band good live?

I am sick of hearing ppl say "how amazing were they live" when the band did nothing but play their songs exactly the same as on the albums, walked back and forth across the stage and engaged in some expected banter with the crowd. And this goes for 90% of rock/metal bands out there. No spontaneity or added stimuli. Slipknot and Rammstein stand out like dogs balls because they realize live is audio visual. Where as bands that think jamming on stage is letting feedback ring out for 10 minutes between 3 or 4 randomly strummed notes can kiss my ass.

I understand it can be a kickass experience at a concert going off in the pit etc. But that has little do with whats going on stage. I just dont understand how bands can justify charging $150+ to shows to just rock up and play their albums exactly as they sound on a $15 cd.

Music over lyrics every time. I'll invest more time into band because I like their music, the lyrics are just a bonus if they're good and enhance the connection. I'm horrible at picking up lyrics, at the early listening stage I just view vocals/lyrics as another instrument.

You've never left a gig and gone... "holy f**king shitballs that was amazing!"?

There's so much that can make it great, the actual performance, the awe of seeing this music that you've connected to, manifest in front of you, feeling it belt through you, the musicianship, the atmosphere of the place, the heat, the lights, the sound.
I don't know many bands that sound exactly as they do on CD either, every show is unique in it's own way, the set list, the venue, the crowd, the mistakes, what you're seeing right there is not going to be repeated. Obviously a lot of shows are forgettable, but f**k me a lot of them are great and burnt in my memory.

Maybe you're just not into it? I have taken mates to shows before and they've been over it before it's over, never taken them along again.

Its All About The Riff for me.

A good singer/vocals add to it. Im more a guitar person but I do appreciate a good singer/lyrics.

Im 99% into metal/Hard Rock. Over the years I have given other styles a go, I wont dismiss anything until I have actually listened to it, nothing does for me like Metal though and thats basically because Im into the Riff.

Great Post, sums up a live show pretty well.

The music definitely wins out over lyrics for me. Songs like Blood Sugar Sex Magik by RHCP, Lonesome by Unwritten Law, Paranoid by Black Sabbath and Stripsearch by Faith No More would be good examples.

There are some tracks that effectively combine music and lyrics though. No Leaf Clover by Metallica and Gimme Shelter by the Stones would be two favourite tracks of mine that demonstrate this.

And like someone else said depressing songs are primarily about the lyrics. The Drugs Don't Work by the Verve, Brick by Bens Folds Five and Make This Go On Forever by Snow Patrol are mostly about the lyrics.

Ive had that experiences at a few shows and, yeah, theyll last forever in my memory. But as you said, a lot of shows are forgettable. I just think bands should show more consideration for their audiences rather then just thinking turning up is 95% of the job. I remember hearing something about how Eminem used to start a show with a short film that incorporated into the entire set. Im not a fan of his music but a show like that, theatre of sorts, seems far more entertaining then what a lot of artists offer.

Faith no more in 2010 at the Hordern is still my fave gig I have been to. Minimal stage theatrics/special effects, the boys rolled out in pastel coloured suits in front of a hot pink curtain and just let their music do the talking. f**king amazing IMO. Patton is a genius.

bit of both. With metal music especially with screaming lyrics i go for the music as i love the technical guitar/drums but with some music i love the lyrics. Lyrics attracted me to NOFX especially with Wolves and wolves clothing, i liked them before hand but that album really made me love them. I love the song material music and lyrics in that album

The lyrics are important to a lot of songs, more so than the music. A lot of John Lennon and Bob Dylan (basically all Bob Dylan) songs are good because of the lyrics. If I'm looking for a certain type of song I'll look into lyrics not music.

one gig i'll never forget is Them Crooked Vultures. Dave on drums John Paul on Bass and Josh on guitar/singing. They seriously didn't need any theatrics (which they didn't) and they just jammed. It seriously felt so close and relaxed in there (horden) i felt like i was just there with them. Homme is such a great front man, all 3 of them have an awesome connection between them all.
