What Attracts You To Certain Music?

There is just something so phony about them, singing songs like "Rock Star" whilst producing the least dangerous form of rock music known to man..

Chad kroeger also openly talks of how he mainly tries to write songs to make money. And the music industry is renowned for its anti-capitalist stance. Very well summarised in this quote by McCartney...

?Somebody said to me, 'But the Beatles were anti-materialistic.' That's a huge myth. John and I literally used to sit down and say, 'Now, let's write a swimming pool."

It's not the money side of things that I care about, I'm all for people making money from their art, I was talking more about the attitude and the lifestyle side of things. They just ring hollow as a band.

"Never Again" is a pretty good song though I'll give them that.

I've always been attracted to a good rhythm first, then tone and atmosphere, then melody, then lyrics. Not to say Lyrics aren't important. If a band has decent music and rubbish lyrics then i won't listen to them.

Limp Bizkit has some good tunes and riffs (first 2 albums) but the lyrics are so f**king horrible that i refuse to ever listen to them.

"Nookie" comes to mind.

Fred Durst....another tosser who thought he could change the direction of music just like one of his ilk......Bono from U2.

Still on the theme of things.I don't like dance music etc,but years ago a group by the name of ''Utah Saints'' brought out a tune with no real lyrics but they overdubbed Kate Bush's voice onto their tune.To me all their stuffs bollocks accept for this one tune.I love it,but i dislike the rest of their stuff and that particular genre of music.

I think they nailed it in regards to capturing that late 80's/ early 90's dance beat sound. I think the nostalgia is what appeals to me, the same as this beat:

...Which I like because the synth effect sounds like the tune to an 80's racing car game!

Faith no more in 2010 at the Hordern is still my fave gig I have been to. Minimal stage theatrics/special effects, the boys rolled out in pastel coloured suits in front of a hot pink curtain and just let their music do the talking. f**king amazing IMO. Patton is a genius.

Totally. I remember leaving ACDC at Telstra Stadium wondering if I had just witnessed the greatest live show ever, and every act I saw from then on would be an anticlimax?

Then, not even 24 hours later, I saw FNM at Soundwave and I have to say they gave ACDC a pretty good run for their money! Everything about their performance that evening was tight, they nailed every song. Surprisingly, I thought their best song was this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ht7kX2IL9nE

The drum beat pounding was militant in its' felocity and the guitar growling away was fierce! What made the night even better was that Mike was being quite Mr Bungle- like in his execution of the vocals, including this awesome, manic laugh into a megaphone that sounded just like something lifted from a Bungle song...

Made me realize who the main people are who pay attention to lyrics. Romantic fools and Evangelical Christians.

One of those groups are full of fantasy based delusional fools with their head so far up in the clouds they avoid logic and reason at all costs in the hope for some reciprocated love.

The others listen to girly love songs to much.

What a well researched, educated and original observation to make. I tip my hat to you, good sir...

I can't say I understand the Nickelback hate. I don't see why it's cool to hate them. They're far from my favourite band, but there are much, much worse bands out there IMO.

Listen to them pre silver side up. So different heavier they had the hit and now manufacture hits by filling the album with slow or pop rock garbage. The missus like that pop rock crap like Maroon 5, matchbox 20 etc. So she likes them so she does the pick up from the pub you hear it. There's 2 or so decent on every album the problem is the 10 or so in-between. Like that song from the 2nd transformers movie (burn it down) an album of that would sell like sh!t but would be decent. When they do an album as such they will get less crap.

Trading an interstate footy game for Going with her to see them wasn't the worst they even did a decent drum solo and skipped heaps of garbage songs

Much of the criticism of Nickelback and Creed is from people who imagine themselves as gatekeepers of what music other people should listen to. It's lazy "I'm better than you because my music is cooler than yours" high school bullshit.

Some groups I listen to because I like the lyrics. Like the hold steady. Most its because I like the tunes.

Chad Kroeger had come out and said he writes songs to make money and be famous. I don't agree with his ideals, but does that make Nickelback talentless? I say no. I'm not a fan, but they do write the occasional decent tune.

And certainly they are many times better than Good Charlotte, for instance.

2 of those good songs:

Side of a bullet- Tribute to Dimebag Darrell from Pantera.
Burn it to the ground- For Transformers

Both song were just written and show talent that they show more often but are just tryiong to sell music. A shame really

I agree that they are wasting their talents. I actually think Kroeger writes some decent tunes and lyrics.

I was just puzzled as to why it's so cool to hate them, when bands like Good Charlotte (really can't stand them), Three Doors Down, Ed Sheeran, etc. are not mentioned when the subject of awful music comes up.

Not a fan, but at least they're interesting.

I'm a weird person, but my main dislike of Fall Out Boy stems from seeing Pete Wentz walk around in leather and tattoos and shit, and then hearing the music he writes and plays.

I also like weird Rotterdam/Italian Hardcore Gabber, so there s a little diffrence.
Everything else is irrelevant.

Talent, distinctiveness, charisma, originality, market appeal - that rules out any Australian music pretty much...
